Conference Site and Accommodations

Program Description

The AZ Society of Pathologists selected these topics based on a survey of the membership to determine educational needs and interests received from evaluations on past meetings. The goal of the planning committee is to include different topics on a rotating basis, so our members are exposed to the latest innovations in a timely manner.

Fiona E. Craig, MD from the Mayo Clinic, Phoenix, will provide talks on follicular lymphoma and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. In addition, Satish K. Tickoo, MD from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, will present on clear cell renal cell tumors, and germ cell tumors of the testis. Richard N. Eisen, MD, FCAP, Phoenix Pathologists, Ltd and Banner Thunderbird Medical Center Clinical Lab, will present an immunohistochemistry update. Kathryn Knight, MD, FCAP, from the College of American Pathologists, will present an update on the current state of the college and advocacy efforts. The program will also include University of Arizona pathology resident case presentations by Mary Hansen Smith, MD and Juan Vitelio Rodriguez, AZ.

Educational Objectives

At the conclusion, the attendee should be able to:

• Describe features characteristic of follicular lymphoma (FL), and outline an approach to diagnosis that includes consideration of small biopsy specimens.

• Discuss morphologic and immunophenotypic variants of FL that may confound the diagnosis.

• List clinically significant subtypes of FL and describe how they are recognized.

• Describe features characteristic of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), NOS, and outline an approach to diagnosis that includes consideration of small biopsy specimens.

• Discuss the distinction between DLBCL, NOS and other subtypes of large B-cell lymphoma including EBV-positive DLBCL, primary DLBCL of the CNS, primary mediastinal large B-cell lymphoma, and ALK-positive large B-cell lymphoma.

• Discuss the expanding diversity of clear cell renal cell tumors, and diagnostic approach to these clinically relevant different entities

• Determine anatomic considerations of germ cell tumors of the testis and staging consequences thereof; and determine answers to relevant differential diagnostic and prognostic questions on these tumors at the microscope

• Define the structure and clinical significance of the Kell antigen system

• Discuss the etiology, incidence, and clinical presentation/prognosis of prostatic stromal sarcoma, describe gross and histologic features, and discuss grading and staging.

• Use new/emerging immunohistochemical tests in surgical pathology

• Discuss the sensitivity, specificity and pitfalls in interpretation of these tests.
