June 15 vs. Farmington

The Mustangs lost 1-0 to Farmington in the quarterfinals of the State Tournament.

Farmington’s Korey Dahlberg allowed just 3 hits, 3 walks and he struck out 8.

Ben Rosin was again outstanding on the mound for the Mustangs, allowing just 4 hits and 0 walks, and he also struck out 8. Rosin faced the minimum in 4 of his 7 innings, and he struck out the side in the 4th.

The Mustangs threatened in the 3rd when Cooper Kleppe reached on a strike 3 that got away from the catcher, and Mason Dean singled. With those runners on 1st and 2nd, a Will Rogers liner up the middle was snagged by the pitcher and he was able to turn it into a double play to end the inning.

The Mustangs loaded the bases in the 6th on back-to-back walks from Dean and Will Rogers, and a base hit by Blake Guerin. A Logan Grimm sharply hit ball was turned into a 4-6-3 double play to end the threat.

Farmington advances to the semi-finals to play Minnetonka who defeated #1 seeded Stillwater earlier in the day.

The season ends for the Mustangs as there is no state tournament consolation play in 2021.

It’s hard when the season ends abruptly and unexpectedly. The players worked hard to earn the opportunity to play in the state tournament; we are extremely proud of them and all they accomplished together this season. When the sting wears off, we believe they will have some great memories of a high school baseball season with their lifelong friends and teammates.

The Mustangs record stands at 8-4 with 8 games to go.

Current Suburban East Conference standings are below.

While there is no such thing as Section standings; Section team current records are below.  Section seeding is done after the regular season and is done by Coaches vote.

The Mustangs have several key statistical goals that we track throughout the season.  The coaches have the same statistical goals each season; statistical goals that we believe are required to achieve in order for the team to be able to compete for a Section championship.  The players meet as a team prior to the season and determine if they would like to modify these key statistical goals. Three of the major goals are:

• Team ERA: Coaches Goal: 2.99.  2021 Players Goal: 2.50.  Current ERA: 2.31.

• Team Quality At-Bat (QAB) Average:  Coaches Goal: .500.  2021 Players Goal: .525.  Current QAB: .495.

May 5 @ Roseville

The Mustangs came away with a 3-1 victory vs. Roseville under the lights at the University of Northwestern.

It was a tight ballgame, with good intensity, and both starting pitchers were able to work out of several jams to keep it a low scoring affair.

The Raiders jumped to a 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the 1st; a HBP, a base hit and the lone error for the Mustangs in the game produced the run for the Raiders.

The Mustangs plated 2 in the top of the 3rd when Mason Dean walked and Will Rogers produced a 2-run HR to give the Mustangs the 2-1 lead.

The Mustangs added one more run in the 4th when Blake Guerin led off with a walk, and eventually scored on a base hit by Brendan Goldman.

Ben Rosin went 6 innings to get the win. He allowed 0 earned runs, 3 hits, 3 walks, 3 HBP’s, and he struck out 8. Rosin did not have his best “stuff” tonight, but he made some adjustments, got stronger as the game wore on, he competed hard, and he struck out 3 batters in his last inning of work. Reid Thurston came in and struck out the side in the 7th to earn the save.

Defensively, aside from the 1 error, the Mustangs made the plays. 2B’man Cooper Kleppe turned a shallow pop-up in right field into a double play by quickly throwing a strike to Logan Grimm at 1B after the catch to double up the runner on 1B. Kleppe had 4 assists on the day, and Guerin had 3 nice assists at 3B as well. Catcher Will Rogers blocked a ball in the dirt, and threw out a runner attempting to advance from 2B to 3B on the pitch in the dirt.

Offensively, the Mustangs totaled 7 hits on the day; Will Rogers with the lone multi-hit day, producing the 2-Run HR, a double off the wall, a walk, 2 RBI’s and a Run scored.

Other offensive contributors were:

• Dean: Single, Walk, Run

• Goldman: Single, RBI

• Thurston: Single, SB

• Guerin: Walk, Run

• Logan Grimm: Single

• Drew Rogers: Single

The Mustangs close out the week at Irondale on Friday at 4:30PM.

May 3 @ Park

The Mustangs traveled to face Suburban East Conference Co-Leader Park (8-1) on Monday. With numerous MLB scouts in attendance, the Mustangs held on for a 8-4 victory.

The big left-handed Tucker Novotny, a Minnesota Gopher recruit, was on the hill for the Wolfpack. The Mustangs put 5 on the board in the top of the 1st.with singles from Brendan Goldman, Will Rogers and Logan Grimm (a 2 RBI base hit), and walks from Drew Rogers and Luke Morrisette. Some defensive miscues by the Wolfpack also helped the cause. The 5 runs were scored by Goldman, Will Rogers, Grimm, Drew Rogers, and Morrisette.

After scoring 5 in the 1st, Novotny settled in and held the Mustangs scoreless in the 2nd – 5th innings, striking out 9 Mustang hitters through 5 innings of work.

Andrew Boeser started on the mound for the Mustangs, and pitched very well to hold Park to just 1 run through 4 innings. The Wolfpack rallied in the bottom of the 5th to score 3 runs to make the score 5-4 through 5 innings.

The Mustangs got a run back in the top of the 6th on Freshman Drew Rogers’ first varsity HR; a solo shot over the LF fence to make the score 6-4.

The Mustangs added some insurance in the top of the 7th. Goldman and Mason Dean led off the inning with walks, and a Reid Thurston RBI base hit scored Goldman. Grimm got his 2nd hit of the day, and a Grimm-Thurston successful double steal scored Thurston. The 2 runs gave the Mustangs a little breathing room at 8-4, and it held up.

Boeser went 4 and 2/3 to earn the win. He scattered 6 hits and 2 walks, and he struck out 6. Blake Guerin came in to get the Mustangs out of a Wolfpack rally in the 5th, and went the rest of the way for 2 and 1/3 innings to earn a save, surrendering 0 runs, 1 hit, 1 walk, and he struck out 3.

Defensively, the Mustangs committed 0 errors in the Scorebook, but we could have been more aggressive on a couple fly balls in the outfield that fell for hits. Goldman made a diving stab of an outfield liner in the bottom of the 1st to prevent a run from scoring. Grimm was busy at 1B; making 3 nice plays on pop ups for outs.

Offensively, two players had multi-hit days, and 7 total players put stats in the book:

Morrisette led off the inning with a walk, and with 1 out Cooper Kleppe reached on an error. Morrisette scored on an RBI base hit from Brendan Goldman, and Kleppe scored on another successful double steal.

Blaine knotted the score at 4-4 with a run in the top of the 5th, and the Mustangs scored 1 in the bottom of the 5th to re-take the lead 5-4. A single by Thurston, followed by a stolen base and an error put him on 3B, and Morrisette drove him in with a base hit to produce his 2nd RBI on the day.

The Mustangs added 2 runs in the 6th to make it 7-4. Goldman led off with a single, stole 2B and 3B, and Will Rogers delivered a 2-run HR over the center field fence.

The Mustangs needed the insurance runs as Blaine rallied for 2 in the top of the 7th to make the final 7-6.

Logan Grimm started on the mound for the Mustangs, and pitched 3 scoreless, allowing just 1 hit and 1 walk.

Cole Hinkel pitched the 4th and 5th to record the Win, allowing 3 hits, a walk and a HBP – he stranded 3 Bengal runners in his 2 innings.

This will be the 4th D1 pitcher the Mustangs will face in Suburban East Conference play thus far. We embrace the challenge as it helps prepare us for the playoffs a few weeks down the line.

April 30 @ Woodbury

The Mustangs traveled to Woodbury and came away with a hard fought 4-2 victory in 8 innings.

As expected, there were 2 dominating performances on the mound in the game. Club Baseball teammates, future Arizona State catcher Will Rogers for the Mustangs, and future Minnesota Gopher pitcher Sam Malec for Woodbury. Both were outstanding and efficient enough to pitch all 8 innings for their teams.

Malec gave up the 4 runs on 7 hits, striking out 10 and walking 2. Will Rogers was able to get the better of this pitcher’s duel today giving up only 1 earned run on 3 hits and 1 BB, and he struck out 8. In the final 6 innings of work for Will Rogers, he faced just 2 over the minimum. Freshman Drew Rogers caught his brother in his first varsity appearance behind the plate.

After Malec struck out the first 2 batters in the top of the 2nd, the Mustangs opened the scoring on a Reid Thurston solo shot over the left field fence.

The Royals capitalized on some Mustangs defensive miscues in the bottom of the 2nd to take a 2-1 lead.

The Mustangs tied it up at 2-2 in the 4th on a solo HR from Will Rogers.

The Royals made 3 outstanding defensive plays to keep the Mustangs from taking the lead in regulation.

Heading to the 8th inning, Luke Morrisette, pinch hitting, laced a single down the LF line to lead off the inning. A Cooper Kleppe sacrifice bunt right in front of the plate ultimately resulted in Morrisette on 3B and Kleppe on 2B with no outs. Malec retired the next batter and then Mason Dean delivered a line shot double to plate both runners and give the Mustangs the 2-run lead.

The Mustangs weren’t flawless today in the field with a couple of errors that helped the Royals score their 2 runs. That said, the Mustangs were solid outside of that 1 inning. Drew Rogers made a nice play on a bunt to retire the batter, as well as blocking 2 pitches in the dirt on strike 3 and retiring the runners at 1B. Reid Thurston was busy in Center Field recording 5 putouts.

Offensively:

• Will Rogers: HR, Single, BB, RBI, Run

• Dean: Double, Single, 2 RBI’s

• Morrisette: Single, Run

• Guerin: BB

April 28 vs. Stillwater

It was an outstanding pitcher’s duel between future college pitchers Ben Rosin (North Iowa Area Community College) for the Mustangs and Gavin Zurn (North Dakota State University) for the Ponies. Both pitched very comparable complete games.

Rosin gave up the 1 run, scattered 5 hits and 3 BB’s, and he struck out 7. Stillwater put a runner on 2B in the 2nd, 4th and 6th innings, and Rosin was able to work out of the innings with no damage. The Ponies finally converted in the 7th with a base hit with a runner on 2B to score the game winning run.

Offensively for the Mustangs, the 5 singles were produced by Mason Dean (also BB), Will Rogers (also HBP), Logan Grimm, Reid Thurston, and Cooper Kleppe. Brendan Goldman had a SB.

Fun Fact: Until today, 2016 was the last time the Mustangs played Stillwater and did not face Stillwater’s future D1 guys Drew Gilbert (Tennessee) or Will Frisch (Oregon State) on the mound.

The Mustangs travel to Woodbury on Friday.

April 26 @ White Bear Lake

The Mustangs traveled to White Bear Lake for the first road game of the season, and prevailed 18-9 in a long game in cold conditions. Everybody in the dugout participated and contributed to the win.
