Model Citizen Fund's Backpack Brigade Helps Homeless This Holiday Season

Homeless to receive more than 80 "adopted" backpacks at Church Under the Bridge

Houston, Texas (Dec. XX, 2014) For many, the holiday season is not filled with joy and cheer, but hungry stomachs and lost hope. Model Citizen Fund will bring some holiday cheer this Christmas by distributing more than 80 “adopted” backpacks to the homeless during a special Christmas service.

“Many of these people are veterans who served our country proudly and fought bravely to help guarantee our freedoms, and yet they, and many others, are without a home,” Model Citizen Fund director Tina Marie Jones-St.Cyr said. “We hope these backpacks filled with the necessities of living will help this holiday season.”

Model Citizen Fund has partnered with National Coalition for the Homeless, the City of Houston, Innate Chiropractic Healing Arts Center, and 1000 Hills Ministry International to distribute the packs from 1-5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 21, at the Church Under the Bridge worship service.

A small group of open-hearted Houstonians has joined in to distribute the backpacks that have been sponsored by local area donors. They have been hard at work filling each pack with more than 150 items, and even more volunteers will be on hand at the event to distribute them, and help out any way they can. The goal of Model Citizen Fund is to bring awareness to the needs of the homeless, especially to the high number of military veterans that are living on the street.

“Many of us take for granted that we have a roof over our heads and food in our stomachs. We know where our next meal is coming from, but that's not so for the many homeless in our area,” Jones-St.Cyr said. “We wish we could give each and every person a home and warm meal, but hopefully the items in these packs can help make living on the streets or in shelters a little easier.”
