Sunday, 26 December 2010

Doctor (Matt Smith) return with his companion Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) and her new husband Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill).

veteran actor Michael Gambon (Harry Potter) and opera diva Katherine Jenkins, in her first acting role.

About the series, lead writer and executive producer, Steven Moffat, commented: “Oh, we're going for broke with this one. It's

honestly never been so excited about writing anything!”

The Christmas special follows on from Matt Smith's first series as the Doctor, which attracted huge critical acclaim for Smith,

his companion, Gillan, and lead writer Moffat, from the media and legions of fans alike.

Grumpy Guide To Christmas

Sunday, 26 December 2010

Following the success of the long-running Grumpy Old Men and Grumpy Old Women series, a host of inveterate Grumps of both sexes

(and varying ages) vent their collective spleen at the festive season this year in a brand-new, hour-long special Grumpy Guide

To Christmas. For those of a disgruntled disposition, Christmas and the accompanying brouhaha cause no end of exasperation, so

this irascible cast are sure to be on particularly grouchy form as they get stuck into a sackful of seasonal grumbles.

Narrated by Geoffrey Palmer, the show tackles the full gamut of holiday horrors, from parties and pantos to the pressures of

forced jollity and Sir Cliff Richard’s ‘Mistletoe and Wine’, with bellyaching from Ozzy Osbourne, Penny Smith, Al Murray, Neil

Morrissey, Alistair McGowan, Ronni Ancona, John Thomson, Shappi Khorsandi, Huey Morgan, Russell Kane, Mark Radcliffe, Bobby

Davro, Donna McPhail, Mark Steel, Andi Oliver, Matthew LeTissier and Terry Christian.

As Mark Radcliffe points out, “There is a great relief if you’ve got family Christmas over with and no-one’s punched each

other.” In order to avoid familial fisticuffs you’ll first have to plough through turkey and cranberry sauce, which according to

Ronni Ancona is “basically chicken with jam” served up with brussels sprouts “which are the grapes of the devil”. Then, of

course, there’s the exchange of presents – here’s Al Murray on the ‘joy’ of giving: “Oh p**s off. The joy is the frenzied

unwrapping, like a crazed velociraptor tearing its prey apart... giving sucks.”; As Christmas becomes more commercialised,

perhaps the saddest thing is that “a lot of youngsters don’t know the true meaning of Christmas”, notes Alistair McGowan. “They

genuinely don’t know that it’s the time we celebrate the birth and the life and the work of Morecambe and Wise.” But the

definitive Grumpy take on Christmas comes courtesy of Ozzy Osbourne, who actually considers himself lucky to have missed the

whole thing one year following a horrific quad bike injury… “it’s not goodwill and peace to all mankind, it’s just bollocks.”

PRODUCTION DETAILS:

A Liberty Bell production. Produced and directed by Pip Banyard, with Stuart Prebble the Executive Producer for Liberty Bell and Gilly Hall the Executive Producer for the BBC.

Family Confidential: The Barnes

Monday, 27 December 2010 Final

Once known as one of the biggest ratbags of Australian rock’n’roll, Jimmy Barnes is now regarded as music royalty. But it hasn’t

been an easy journey.

Jimmy’s battles with drugs and alcohol have taken him to the brink, almost costing him his family and his life.

He was saved by an unlikely love affair that has survived against the odds.

Jane Barnes grew up in a very different world to Jimmy’s. She spent her childhood in a traditional warm family compound in

Thailand and brought her unique values to her marriage with Jimmy.

This modern Australian love story reveals one man’s courage to face his demons and his transformation and strengthening through

the love and support of an extended, blended family.

Willie's Perfect Chocolate Christmas

Monday, 27 December 2010

Take one eccentric cook, with a life-long passion for chocolate, mixed together with delicious ingredients and favourite family

recipes, add a roaring fire, a Christmas tree and snow and you’ve got …

Willie’s Perfect Chocolate Christmas

It’s been a very busy year for the Harcourt-Cooze family. Willie has worked 16 hours a day, seven days a week to realise his

dream of making the best chocolate in the world. It’s been a struggle with many mishaps along the way.

With Willie’s chocolate finally on the shelves in some of the UK’s top stores, it’s now time for him to have a break and spend

quality time with Tania and the children William, Sophia and Eve.

Christmas with Willie means there’s plenty of chocolate to go around. To thank his staff for all their hard work, Willie pops

into the factory to share his cacao-enhanced mince pies with the packing girls and his good friend, Bob.

Working such long hours for eighteen months straight, it’s not just the family Willie has neglected. To make up for lost time

with his friends, he decides to cook a Christmas feast for them. On the menu is a quince and chocolate jelly starter; lamb

infused with garlic, rosemary and orange, cooked in the ground for 24 hours; and Willie’s favourite chocolate cheese cake.

While Willie’s busy cooking up a storm in the kitchen – and the garden, Tania and the children make stockings packed full of

chocolate treats and hung on the Christmas tree as goodie bags for their guests.

As the party draws to a close, with tummies full of chocolate-laced food, Willie has one more surprise treat up his sleeve – a

magical light show.

To The Manor Bowen: Community Spirit

Tuesday, 28 December 2010

Laurence and Jackie left London five months ago but have almost been too busy to step outside their manorial gates since.

But if Laurence wants to be part of village life he needs to pull his frilly-cuffed finger out! His first venture is organising

the raffle for the local fete. Not only does Laurence cadge prizes from his celebrity mates, he’s also raffling himself and

Jackie by offering a special dinner in the winner’s own home with Laurence as butler and Jackie as chef.

The charm offensive takes a step back when Jackie’s gardener Beth lights a smoky bonfire and Jackie turns the air blue! And the

hairdresser in Cirencester gets knocked off their Christmas card list when Laurence goes for a trim and gets his famous locks

lopped into a mullet.

A big push into the community sees Jackie giving the prizes at the Women’s Institute and Laurence cleaning the church. The

Llewelyn-Bowens are finally on the village map!

The builders have their own big push trying to finish in time for the carpet fitters. If only the alarm didn’t keep going off.

If only Laurence wouldn’t keep giving them more to do and if only the family wasn’t trying to live there!

QI

Wednesday, 29 December 2010

Tonight QI is all about cockney rhyming slang. The original purpose of cockney rhyming slang was for criminals to disguise what

they were saying from policemen. The word ‘Cockney’ means a ‘Cock’s egg’ – i.e. something you cannot trust, like an egg laid by

a cockerel.

This week any flamencos (dancers, answers) given in Pyong (yang, slang) score Barney (Rubble, double) points.

Joining QI-master Stephen Fry are Phill Jupitus, Bill Bailey, Rory McGrath and Alan Davies.

Sleek Geeks: Weeing

Thursday, 30 December 2010 Final

So what actually happens after you drink a glass of water? How does it come out the other end?

We follow liquid through peristalsis all the way to the bladder. We see a remarkable X-Ray of a bladder emptying and amazing

footage of the urinary tract. Adam visits a work site to show a Urine Colour Chart – the chart is used so you can tell if you’re

dehydrated by the colour of your wee.

We demythologise the must-drink-eight-glasses-of-water-a-day belief and discuss the existence of embedded water in food we eat.

We also explore the myths that you should wee on a jellyfish sting and that there is a burgeoning market for stolen kidneys. We

discuss breaking the seal and stopping midstream, exploding kidneys and how much elephants can wee.

Karl claims men have to splatter, and that the same reason men splatter is the same basis for the technology that creates ink

jet printing. Ruben uses drain cleaner to make flammable bubbles, it’s just up to Adam to set them alight before they blow away.

Adam explains why some people’s wee smells of asparagus while others doesn’t.

A group of Australia’s premier performers, including Deni Hines, Iva Davies and The Chaser’s Andrew Hansen and Chris Taylor

collaborate to produce a moving tribute to micturation ‘Wee Across the World’.

The Deep

Thursday, 30 December 2010 New Series

Far below the Arctic ice, in the deepest, darkest place on Earth, seven men and women are trying to find the solution to the

world’s escalating energy crisis. But what if someone, or something, finds them first?

Welcome to the new cold war. As the world’s energy sources dwindle, the huge untapped resources of oil and gas below the Arctic

seabed are becoming a source of bitter international conflict. Only one research submersible is allowed in this declared

exclusion zone: the state-of-the-art Orpheus, manned by an elite team of scientists and experts from Britain, Russia and the US.

In this political minefield of crushing pressure, towering hydrothermal vents, total darkness and unimaginable danger, they are

hoping to find so-called ‘lava bugs’ – remarkable bacteria which could herald a future of clean, green energy for all.

But not everyone is as willing to let 10 billion barrels of black gold slip from their grasp. It’s not long before the crew –

Frances (Minnie Driver), the captain, marine biologists Samson (Goran Visnjic) and Maddy (Antonia Thomas), geeky volcanologist

Vincent (Sacha Dhawan), physicist Svetlana (Vera Filatova), chief engineer Clem (James Nesbitt) and a suspect last-minute

addition Raymond – find themselves in deep trouble, forced to make increasingly desperate decisions that will test their

relationships and integrity to the extreme.

For here, more than two kilometres under the surface fighting failing technology and unknown entities, there is no one to say

who is friend and who is foe. No one to hear their cries…

This high-octane blockbuster, featuring an international all-star cast, offers non-stop jeopardy, edge-of-yourseat thrills and

electrifying special effects. The really frightening thing is – it could happen tomorrow.

Margot

Friday, 31 December 2010

Beautiful and heartbreaking, Margot brings to the screen with breathtaking vividness the glamorous and turbulent life of

Britain’s first international ballet superstar.

Inspired by Meredith Daneman's riveting biography, this film focuses on Dame Margot Fonteyn’s relationship with Rudolf Nureyev.

A relationship which electrified Fonteyn’s career when she was already past the age most dancers retire, and a relationship that

intrigued the world. Was the ardour that Fonteyn and Nureyev expressed for each other while dancing also consummated in bed?

At the age of 40, Dame Margot Fonteyn (Anne Marie Duff — TheVirgin Queen; Shameless) was already one of the greatest ballerinas

of the 20th century, but beneath her elegantly poised facade was a woman painfully aware of the future. Torn between her

loyalties to The Royal Ballet and her marriage to the notorious and unfaithful Panamanian diplomat, Roberto ‘Tito’ de Arias (Con

O’Neill — Criminal Justice), Fonteyn sensed mounting pressure to consider retirement.

But as Fonteyn’s stardom was beginning to wane, her unexpected pairing with the young Russian émigré Rudolph Nureyev (Michiel

Huisman — The Young Victoria) caused a global sensation. And while her private life collapsed, Fonteyn’s passionate and vibrant

relationship with Nureyev transformed her into a worldwide celebrity and created one of the most enduring and celebrated ballet

partnerships of all time.

Edinburgh Military Tattoo 2010

Set against the unique backdrop of Edinburgh Castle, the diamond jubilee of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo features talented performers from Jordan, Poland, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand and Switzerland.

The program promises a variety of high class acts, filling the castle esplanade with a truly memorable celebration of music and dance. One of 2010’s highlights is the unique Massed Pipes and Drums from home and from overseas.

Also featured is a thrilling display of mini-motorcycle magic from the Imps; the Edinburgh Tattoo debut of the band of the Polish Border Guard, with their blend of traditional mountain music; the Citadel Regimental Band and Pipes from Charleston in South Carolina, who give a precise performance of music and marching; the Bands, Drill Team and Mounted Guard of Honour from the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, who perform a captivating Middle Eastern display of music and drill.

This year the Army takes the lead, represented by the bands of the Coldstream and Grenadier Guards. No Edinburgh Military Tattoo would be complete without impeccable international dance from the Massed Highland Dancers, this year from Scotland and New Zealand. There is also a display from Army Dancers.

Not to be missed is an entertaining display courtesy of the New Zealand Army Band. The Tattoo ends with the sound of the Lone Piper as Major Gavin Stoddart reprises the role his father performed in the first Tattoo in 1950.
