Weekly Overview

Week 2

Overview

Learning is the acquisition of new knowledge, skills, attitudes, and abilities. Learning is a dynamic process which involves complex cognitive, affective, and psychomotor processes. There are several philosophical orientations regarding learning and many learning theories. There is also much debate about which theories are most accurate. However, it is agreed that a multifaceted approach to learning is best. The health care educator needs to be informed about theories of learning to meet the needs of diverse learners. Health care educators can apply these principles while teaching in the academic setting, workplace, or in the community.

This week you learn about traditional learning theories and a few newer perspectives. There are five recognized traditional orientations to learning which include 1) behavioral, 2) cognitive, 3) humanistic, 4) constructivist, and 5) social cognitive. Each of these orientations describes a perspective or philosophy of how learning occurs and how adults develop. Learning theorists such as Maslow, Skinner, Bandura, Piaget, Dewey, and Knowles illustrate the complex processes that describe human learning. Although the traditional learning theories can guide the educator's practice, newer perspectives must also be assessed for their value to the learning process. Three newer perspectives that can be applied to learning in the health care setting include: (1) spiritual learning, (2) narrative learning, and (2) feminist pedagogy.
