What You Need

2-liter bottle (empty)

3 cups vinegar (or fill
the bottle about
half full)

What To Do
?
Use the duct tape to attach
the pencils to the bottle so
that the bottle can sit on
the ground with the
opening pointing down.
2 to 3 tablespoons
baking soda
?
Fill the bottle about half-full
of vinegar.

Place baking soda on a
small square of paper towel
and roll it up.

Cork that fits in the
bottle opening¡ªnot
too tight
?
Go to an outside open
space and put on safety
glasses.

Push rolled paper towel into
the bottle and insert cork.

Safety glasses
?
Quickly place bottle on its
pencil legs on a flat surface.

Stand back and watch your
rocket take off!
What¡¯s Happening
Mixing vinegar and baking
soda causes a chemical
reaction. The reaction gives
off gas (carbon dioxide). As
the gas expands inside the
bottle, it runs out of space.
Pressure begins to build.
Eventually the pressure
pushes out the cork, and the
rocket soars into the air.
