In 1986, a group of beverage managers initiated a meeting, and with them a shared vision to form an association for the bartenders in the industry.

Despite their heavy commitment at work, they still meet up and the objectives were written and the most exhausting procedural constitution was drafted.

It was not all that easy with obstacles to clear but the association's name was selected and applied. The office site came from the blessing of the Singapore Hotel Association which has since been the main reason for the existence of the association. Recruitment of members was done and the Management Committee was formed.

GO AHEAD... ASSOCIATION OF BARTENDERS, SINGAPORE (ABS) In 1987, the formation year of the Association of Bartenders, Singapore, a $10.00 registration fee was paid to the Registry of Society to formally register the association. The Singapore Hotel Association assisted by donating $500 to our kitty-bank in support of our newly formed association. The restless association barely in its first year was already involved in the international scene.

The ABS then applied to join the International Bartenders Association (IBA). All ground work was done and the association invited the late Mr. Yoshiaki Sawai from Japan who was then the Vice-President (Far East) of the IBA. Mr. Sawai's trip down opened the association opportunity in its admission into the IBA.

In December, Mr. Jason Long, the first President of the association, accompanied by Mr. Derrick Lee, Honorary Secretary, attended the IBA Congress in Rome, Italy.

The ABS was formally accepted by the International Bartenders Association whose President then was Mr. Michel Bigot.

Note: In 2007, the Association was renamed "Association of Bartenders & Sommeliers Singapore".

The association have until today a big "THANK YOU" to the late Sawai San for his valuable assistance in getting the association into the IBA.

Penny University

402 East Coast Road, Singapore

Since the emergence of coffeehouses such as Starbucks, you cannot go anywhere in Singapore without spotting a new coffeehouse or an artisanal Caf?. Caf?s like these are springing up everywhere. I'm a coffee lover myself so you don't hear me complaining.

Many people here have been raving about this artisanal caf? called Penny University and I figured, why not give it a try. Since breakfast is my favourite meal of the day, it was only fitting to head down there for a hearty brekkie.

Personally, I found the location to be a little out of the way since I wasn't driving. So taking the train then a bus there was a little cumbersome.

But hey...anything for a good breakfast. Quaint lil' place and yet it was packed! I liked the deco but we're not here to talk about that. Let's dive straight into the food, shall we?

I ordered my favourite morning brekkie of Eggs Benedict. It never fails to wake up my tired bones and this certainly did not disappoint.

The poached eggs were good although in my opinion the whites could have been a little more cooked but what blew me away was the portion. Two full eggs on top of two slices of thick sourdough bread and between them were two generous slices of smoked salmon. That's a lot for little me. I've had my fair share of Eggs Ben and most times

the servings are small with thin slices of salmon and they come with English Muffins or toast. I must say, having it with sourdough bread is the bomb! It's thick and soft so it absorbs the eggs and Hollandaise sauce perfectly.

The other dish I ordered was Turkish Eggs which were 2 poached eggs on lightly whipped yogurt, topped with spicy Moroccan harissa sauce and oregano leaves, served with toast. I had no idea what it was when I ordered it but when it came it looked like a bowl of porridge. But boy, does it taste good...

It was creamy and tangy, and a little sour from the yogurt but it tasted good. It's an explosion of different sensations going on in your mouth. I've never had

Turkish Eggs before and my first try was a good one. Just like the Eggs Ben, the portion was big. It was served in a big bowl that could feed two. And that was probably what I should have done just like the other customers around me; shared it with my partner in crime. Suffice to say I went home with a full and happy belly.

As for the coffee, it was alright. Not as strong as I'd like mine to be but I probably ordered the wrong one. Oh well, more reason to head there for another try. And despite the location, it's worth a try.

In love with

Cake Love

No.4 Jalan Pisang, Singapore

When we got news that a new Halal Caf? had opened around the corner, we just had to drop by and say hello.

Cake Love is small little Caf? tucked away at the end of a quiet little street. Despite the fact that it sits right next to a famous cupcake shop where you'll find people lined up for hours, Cake Love definitely stands on its own and has its own personality.

When we walked in, we were blown away by its retro-feel. Its statement piece of d?cor was definitely the graffiti on the wall. A perfect photo corner for the triggerhappy.

After chatting with the very friendly barista, we decided to start our usual Saturday brunch with the signature Belgian Waffles, a hazelnut latte and their Rockabilly Twist.

The Belgian Waffles arrived with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the top and drizzled with maple syrup and chocolate sauce on the sides. The waffles were sweet and fluffy, and weren't dry. They were so good even on its own. So at one point we actually set the ice cream

aside and enjoyed it with the maple syrup. We absolutely loved it. The hazelnut latte was a perfect hot companion. But if you're looking for a cold one, then try the Rockabilly Twist which is a combo of tropical fruits in a cold ice blended drink.

Since we were still a little hungry, we decided to try their Beef Burger.

To us, the presentation was just as retro as the d?cor. Do you remember comics like Archie where they hung out at the ice cream parlour and had burgers with a side of fries? It looked just like that, in our opinion. The thick beef patty was topped with a fried egg in a shape of a heart. How cute!

The beef burger was nicely spiced and the thick-cut fries weren't greasy and still had a little crunch. It was absolutely, positively delicious.

Cake Love also serves cupcakes, tarts and macarons, which unfortunately by the time we were done, we couldn't fit anymore in. However, we didn't miss the opportunity to take some macarons to go. Personally I'm not a fan of macarons because my first try years ago was a nightmare. But since trying their Salted Caramel macarons, I'm now a fan! Cake Love,...we will be back!
