General Descriptions of Components

Group of three or four

I don’t think we need to explain this, well, I hope not. (

Owners portfolio with names

Each group will receive a folder/binder to keep all of your materials in. You need to put your names, and eventually your team names on it. All components of this project will be kept in this folder, even after completion. This folder will NOT go home with you for any reason. So, don’t fall behind PLEASE!

Team Budget Worksheet

Each group of owners will receive 1.6 billion dollars cash to start with. However, through marketing, merchandise sales, and television/radio contracts there will be ways to make additional money. You will maintain a series of budget worksheets that document each expenditure (money spent), or gained (money made). Each team will be expected to balance their budget after an expenditure or gain. You CANNOT at any point have a negative balance in your total account. If this occurs, your grade will be lowered. So, spend wisely. *Your first expenses will be your initial franchise fee to the league, and your location costs to your destination city. These fees will be determined depending on the league you are in, and the city you wish to locate.

Proposed team name, sport and possible location

You are required to complete a proposal letter to the commissioner of the sport you will be participating in, asking for permission to join the league, your possible team name, and desire to persuade the potential location city to allow your franchise to operate; below are the general guidelines, a more formal outline will be provided. *The city you wish to locate must have a population of 2000,000 or greater.

• Formal business letter/proposal

• At least three paragraphs in length.

• Must ask permission to join league, use team name, and lobby city you wish to locate your team.

Written proposal to possible host city

For this portion, you will be composing a five (5) paragraph persuasive essay to both the general public and official representatives of the city you wish to locate your franchise. The purpose of this essay is simple; you need to convince them to allow you to locate to their city. A more formal outline for this is attached in this packet. If you convince the public and city representatives, you will receive an approval letter and business license from the city; allowing you to begin operations in their city. This approval letter and business letter must be placed in your folder at all times. If audited, you can be forced to cease operations if you have neither. This will affect your grade.

Approval form from host city

Once you have convinced your host city to allow you to begin operations, you will receive this form back with the approval.

Team name, logo, and uniform illustration

On this illustration you will simply write your team name, draw your logo in color, and illustrate your uniforms.

*Remember, an interesting logo and jersey is marketable and sells merchandise, making you more money.

Informational write-up for team name/logo

This will be a 1-2 paragraph informative report that details the reasoning behind your choice of name, logo, and uniform. Things to include may be the significance in the name and its relevance to your city, and your reasoning behind your logo and uniforms. In other words, why do you think it will sell?

Approval for team name, logo, and uniform

After reading your informative report, the league will either approve or deny your team name, logo, or illustration.

Informational Report for the Public

This is a three (3) paragraph informative report introducing your team to the general public. This is not an advertisement, rather an official announcement of your existence. In this report you want to introduce your team, your goals, why you chose this city, etc. A more detailed outline will be provided during the project.

Marketing campaign outline

This will be a general outline of your marketing strategy. You want to come up with two slogans for your team. You will also identify such aspects as: your target audience, type of marketing style, propaganda use, etc. A more detailed outline of this aspect will be provided.

Promotional advertisement or video

This is where you will actually create a radio commercial with an illustration, a video commercial, an advertisement for a newspaper/magazine, or all that market your team. This will also help you earn money in the future. I will explain. In addition, a more detailed outline will follow.

Job Applications

You will be creating two job applications: one for executive positions, and one for support staff positions. Executive positions are people who help run the team on a daily basis: general managers, marketing directors, other office staff, etc. Support staff positions are those who assist on game days: concession workers, maintenance staff, ushers, parking attendants, security guards, etc. Both applications should be thorough. Meaning, you really need to think about what is important to you when hiring staff. A more formal outline will be provided when the time comes.

*You will receive applicants/resumes and pick people to interview for certain positions.

Hire staff/salary structure

You will be expected to hire a certain amount of staff, both executive and support. You will also be required to provide a salary structure for each position, meaning how much are you wiling to pay for certain jobs? You need to be careful, if you underpay you will get few to no applicants, or poor workers. If you overpay, you can go broke. A more formal outline will be provided when the time comes.

Merchandise to sell/Merchandise Order Forms

You must come up with at least five (5) merchandise items to sell, but you can have as many as you wish; for example, jerseys, hats, posters, etc. You must also price these items making them reasonable for the public to purchase. You will earn money selling these items. A more formal outline will be provided when the time comes. Each group will receive a detailed list of items at cost, to order. In addition, each group will fill out a bi-weekly merchandise order form, for continued merchandise.

Concession Sales/Order Forms

In addition to merchandise, selling concessions at your games is a great way to make revenue. Each franchise will be required to order concessions to sell at their games. Your team will receive weekly concession sales reports detailing which items sold and how much revenue was made. *Each week you will be expected to fill out a new concession order form to restock your concession stands.

Game Schedule

The league will provide you with a game schedule so you will know when to anticipate your merchandise and concession sales reports, and re-order merchandise.

Informational Report/Press Release to Public

Each team will be expected to host a “press conference” to introduce your team to the public. This press conference must be 5-9 minutes in length and requires you to introduce your team, logo, goals, etc. to the public. This is the FIRST real impression the public will have for your franchise.

Research outline highlighting the benefits of a stadium

This is the first step in getting your stadium built. You will highlight for city officials and taxpayers on the benefits of putting in a stadium for you to play. For example, how much revenue will it generate? Will it bring more business and tourism to the city, etc.?

Formal report (informative speech) giving benefits of stadium

You will give a speech to city officials and the public highlighting your research. The better job you do, the more tax money you will generate funding the building of your stadium. The more money you receive, the less out of pocket expense you will have for building your stadium, meaning helping your bottom line. You must project accurately the cost of building the stadium, exact dollar amount you are asking for (everyone must ask for at least 20% of cost for construction), and projections for how much revenue the stadium will bring to the city.

Stadium location proposal

This is a brief proposal highlighting your proposed location for your stadium. Downtown, suburbs, etc.

Stadium Cost

Simple breakdown of the total cost for building your stadium.

Stadium sketch/design

You will sketch out your stadium design to scale; this will be labeled with all necessary details. You will be given graphing paper to create your sketch.

Stadium model to scale

You will design your stadium model to scale. A more formal outline will be provided when the time comes.

Present stadium model to public

Present your stadium and final balance sheet to the public.

Printable Materials for Teachers

*The following pages are printable pages for most components of the project. You may use these as templates, print them, or create your own to meet your student’s needs.

It is recommended that you print all of the materials at once, then put them in a binder and make copies as needed.

Team Logo and Illustration/Informational Write-up

Objective: You need to design your team logo. This logo is IMPORTANT! Remember, your logo is the first impression most people will have about your team. In addition, a solid logo can help you market your team through merchandise sales. Your logo must be school appropriate, but be innovative! *Remember, a bad logo could mean millions of dollars lost!

Directions: Each franchise will receive a piece of sketch paper; this will be the paper that you are to officially submit your logo to the league office for approval.

In addition, you must compose a 1-2 paragraph informative write-up (on a separate sheet of paper) explaining why you feel your logo best represents your franchise. Things to include may be the significance in the name and its relevance to your city, and your reasoning behind your logo and uniforms. In other words, why do you think it will sell? This must be attached to your logo sketch when submitted to the league office. Once approved, the league office will stamp your logo with the leagues seal, which will copyright it. Once returned, put your logo sketch and write-up in your portfolio.

Informational Report/Press Conference to Public

Objective: You will prepare a 5-9 minute informative speech (press conference) to introduce your team to the public. At the press conference, you must discuss the following aspects:

• Team name/logo

• Team goals

• Benefits for fans

*You must cover these three aspects. However, this is the FIRST real impression the public will have for your franchise. So, you may discuss anything else you feel the public needs to know about your franchise.

Team Marketing Campaign/Billboards

Objective: Every professional sports franchise needs to advertise in order to sell their product to the public. Your team is no different. You will be required to create a marketing campaign to sell your team to the public.

Directions: You will need to accomplish two things: First, you need to use sketch paper to create two (2) billboards to advertise your team. The first billboard must market to families; the second must strictly market to children. Remember, children are a great group to market to. Your billboards must include: your logo, a slogan or catchy phrase, and be school appropriate. *The use of propaganda is appropriate here if done correctly.

Next, your group must write a thirty second radio/TV-commercial to air prior to your first game played. If you choose the radio commercial, you must:

1. Compose a thirty second script and read it aloud to the class.

2. Utilize a slogan/catch phrase.

3. Incorporate your team name.

4. Use at least two (2) forms of propaganda (bandwagon, testimonial, etc.)

If you choose the TV commercial, you must:

1. Video tape or act out a thirty second advertisement.

2. Utilize a slogan/catch phrase.

3. Use at least two (2) forms of propaganda (bandwagon, testimonial, etc.)

4. Utilize at least one visual (can be your logo).

Formal Report (informative speech)/Benefits of a Stadium

Objective: You will be preparing a 3-5 minute informative speech on the benefits of building a stadium. This speech is to be delivered to the city council of your host city. Your objective is to be informative and persuasive. Your goal is to get as much money from the city as possible to help you fund your stadium. The city council represents the people, whose tax dollars are likely going to fund the money given to you for the stadium.

*Remember, the more money you receive from the city, the less you have to spend.

Your speech must include:

• Research highlighting the economic benefits for a city to build a stadium.

• Research highlighting the entertainment benefits for a city to have a stadium.

• Your predictions/estimates (with support) on how much revenue the stadium will bring to the city. e.g-can also use the venue to host other events, such as concerts, other sporting events, festivals, etc.

• Projected cost for building the stadium (must be very accurate)

• Exact dollar amount you are asking for. If you only want to ask for a certain portion so you can own part of the stadium you may. However, every group MUST ask for at least 20% funding for their stadium construction.

• Anything else you feel is important for the city council to know.

In addition, you must compose a brief two (2) paragraph proposal to the city for your stadium location. Location could mean everything! So, you will need to know the geography and demographics of your city. In other words, why is the location you chose to put the stadium a good one?

*Once your speech is completed, the city council will convene, then decide on how much money (if any) to give you for construction of your stadium. At that point, you must expense the remaining cost from your own budget. Depending

“Nachos Here!”

[pic]

One of the reasons why fans of your team love attending games is the food! Once you’ve ordered your concessions your objective is to develop “team nachos” for sale at your concession stands. Most sports teams have adopted this concept: Fenway Franks (Boston Red Sox), Dodger Dogs (L.A. Dodgers), even Ichi Rolls (Seattle Mariners Sushi). You must custom make your nachos; meaning they must somehow define/capture the essence of your team/city. e.g. If your team name was the Denver Blizzard, you may have Blizzard Nachos, covered in cheese, jalapenos, and “snow”, or diced onions.

*You WILL be making these nachos at school for others to try; your teacher will let you know what ingredients you will need to bring in. No group of owners will be allowed to make their nachos unless their recipe is submitted by the date assigned. Below please write the name of your creation, ingredients, and a step-by-step process for making them. You may have no less than three ingredients (excluding chips) or no more than eight.
