COURSE REQUIREMENTS

TESTING

There will be five (5) tests, five (5) online quizzes, and a final. Make-up tests will be given in only extreme circumstances (i.e. family emergencies, injury, etc.). If an exam is missed without prior consultation (exceptions being the reasons listed above), the score for that exam is a “0.” Quizzes will be posted on Angel, students are allowed two attempts, only the highest score will be recorded. The final, which is comprehensive and mandatory, will be given. Scientific calculators (TI-30 or equivalent) are required. Graphing calculators are optional and not mandatory. However, calculators more advanced than TI-84 are absolutely not permitted. The lowest test grade and quiz grade before the final will be dropped before grades are calculated.

ATTENDANCE AND WITHDRAWAL POLICY

Students are expected to attend class regularly and on time. The college wide attendance policy is included in the Syllabus Addendum: . The policy notes that each instructor is to exercise professional judgment and define “active participation” in class (and therefore “attendance”), and publish that definition in each syllabus.

An active participant of this class will have not missed more than the equivalent of two weeks of class. Furthermore, a student will attend class for the entire allotted class time. If a student is excessively late and/or leaves class early, he or she may be considered to not be an active participant. Emergencies happen, if one is to arise, please communicate with your instructor to come up with an appropriate attendance plan.

Students who are not actively participating in class as defined in an instructor's syllabus will be reported to the Administration during the week following the last date to withdraw with a “W” (as posted in the academic calendar on the college’s web site). A grade of “WF” will be assigned to students who are not actively participating during the week following the last day to withdraw with a W grade.

Absences for religious reasons – Students are to notify instructors in advance of an anticipated absence to observe religious holy days. There is no penalty for such absences. Students are responsible for making up work covered during such an absence and should be given a reasonable amount of time to do so. Major class assignments, exams and official ceremonies should be scheduled at times that do not conflict with major religious holy days when possible.

HOMEWORK & ONLINE QUIZZES

Homework will be assigned for each section. It is highly recommended that you keep up with the homework and do all the problems assigned. Prior to each exam, a unit quiz will be posted online. A student will be allowed two attempts. Only the highest score will be recorded. The lowest quiz grade before the final will be dropped before grades are calculated

GRADING POLICY

The average of the four tests prior to the final will count for 65% of the grade. The average of the four quizzes prior to the final will count for 10% of the grade. The comprehensive and mandatory final will count for 25% of the grade. The grading scale is:

90 – 100 = A

80 – 89 = B

70 – 79 = C

60 – 69 = D

Below 60 = F

In order to pass this course with a C or above, your overall course grade must be 70% or higher.

Grading and Repeat Course Policies

State policy specifies that students may not repeat a college credit course for which a grade of “C” or higher has been earned except by appeal to the campus Academic Appeals committee. You may repeat a college credit course one time without penalty. At the third attempt, you will pay the full cost of instruction. The full cost of instruction rate for the academic year is stated in the course catalog. In addition, at the third attempt you may NOT receive a grade of “I,” “W,” or “X,” but must receive the letter grade earned. This grade will be averaged into your overall grade point average.

DISCIPLINE SPECIFIC INFORMATION

Calculator: A scientific and or graphing calculator is permitted for this course. Cell-phone calculators will NOT permitted.

Help Session: All students are encouraged to ask content questions during scheduled class time; however, if a student has questions relating to content material outside of class, he or she is encouraged to contact the instructor via email or during office hours.

Free Tutoring: The Learning Support Commons provides free math tutoring on the Clearwater Campus in LA-100. The following link provides further information: spcollege.edu/clw/lsc/index.htm

STUDENT’S EXPECTATIONS AND INSTRUCTOR’S EXPECTATIONS

College-wide student expectations are located in the Syllabus Addendum: . This course will strengthen your algebra skills and will also help you prepare for the Precalculus Algebra (MAC 1140), Trigonometry (MAC 1114) and Applied Calculus I (MAC 2233) courses. It is highly recommended you devote extra time to study and understand the material. Know the concepts in this course very well, as you will be expected to apply what you know immediately after this course. Allow as much time as possible to succeed in this course.

STUDENT SURVEY OF INSTRUCTION

The Student Survey of Instruction is administered in courses each semester in Angel. It is designed to improve the quality of instruction at St. Petersburg College. All student responses are confidential and anonymous and will be used solely for the purpose of performance improvement.

HURRICANE EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS

In the event that a hurricane or other natural disaster causes significant damage to St. Petersburg College facilities, you may be provided the opportunity to complete your course work online. Following the event, please visit the college web site for an announcement of the College’s plan to resume operations.

This syllabus is currently available in ANGEL for your convenience. Log in to ANGEL to confirm that you have access, reporting any difficulty to the SPC Student Technical Call Center at 727-341-4357 or via email at Onlinehelp@spcollege.edu.
