Information about the Redesigned SAT

Beginning with the March 2016 administration, the following changes will be reflected in the SAT.

Assessment Changes The SAT will have three parts:

? Evidence-Based Reading and Writing: Includes a Reading Test and a Writing and Language Test. The Reading Test measures your comprehension and reasoning skills with a focus on careful reading of appropriately challenging passages in a wide array of subject areas. The Writing and Language Test assesses your skills in revising and editing a range of texts in a variety of subject areas to improve expression of ideas and to correct errors in grammar, usage, and punctuation. Each test is composed of multiparagraph passages and multiple-choice questions. Time allotted: 65 minutes for Reading; 35 minutes for Writing and Language.

? Math: Includes multiple-choice and student-produced response questions based on the math that college-bound students typically learn during their first three years of high school. One portion of the Math Test permits calculator use, and one portion does not. Time allotted: 80 minutes.

? Essay (optional): Asks you to read and analyze an argument and write an effective response. Time allotted: 50 minutes.

Scoring Changes All multiple-choice questions are scored the same way: one point for each correct answer and zero points for incorrect answers. No points are subtracted for incorrect answers or answers left blank.

? Total Scores: One SAT total score (400 to 1600 scale) combines the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score with the Math score.

? Section Scores: Two section scores (200 to 800 scale) for Evidence-Based Reading and Writing and for Math.

? Test Scores: Three test scores (10 to 40 scale) in Reading, Writing and Language, and Math. ? Cross-Test Scores*: Two cross-test scores (10 to 40 scale) based on questions from across the

Reading, Writing and Language, and Math Tests: 1) Analysis in Science 2) Analysis in History/Social Studies ? Subscores: Seven subscores (1 to 15 scale) in areas such as Words in Context and Heart of Algebra.

? Essay Scores (optional): Three scores (2 to 8 scale) on the dimensions of Reading, Analysis, and Writing. Note: The Essay scores are not factored into the total SAT score.

Free Practice Powered by Khan Academy The College Board is collaborating with Khan Academy to offer students free access from anywhere in the world to personalized online instruction. Visit collegereadiness. for more information.

* Cross-test scores are contingent upon results of research.
