Concordia 67 vs. Carleton 73 - Game Recap

MOORHEAD-- Two-time defending MIAC champion Carleton used a 28-8 run the middle part of the opening half to swing the momentum in their favor as they clawed their way to a 73-67 win over Concordia. The game was a rematch of the MIAC Tournament championship from 2003-04.

The Cobbers outscored the Knights 16-7 in the opening eight minutes, and 39-33 in the final 20 minutes of the game, but couldn't hold back the powerful front line of Carleton in their pivotal 20-point first half swing and ended up losing by six.

The loss breaks a two-game, league winning streak for Concordia. The Cobbers are now 2-3 in the MIAC and 4-4 overall. Carleton wins for the seventh consecutive time. After losing their first three games of the season, the Knights have rattled off seven straight wins and are now a perfect 7-0 in league play and 7-3 overall.

Mandy Pearson (Sr., Watkins, Minn.) and Jamie Visness (Sr., Hallock, Minn.) posted team-highs in points for the Cobbers. Both players kept the Cobbers close in the waning moments of the game by hitting 3-point shots and both finished with 18 points. Melanie Hageman (Fr., Fargo, N.D.) was the only other Concordia player in double figures. She scored 10 points and has now recorded at least 10 points in seven of the team's eight games.

The Cobbers were "done in" by the junior tandem of Megan Vig and Kari Christianson. Both players scored 20 points, and both had stretches where they dominated the offense end of the floor. Vig was 4-of-9 from the floor, but went 10-of 13 from the free throw line including several clutch makes in the final minute of play. Vig is now averaging 21.5 points in her last four games against the Cobbers. Christianson had a tremendous game shooting the ball. She was 6-of-8 from the field and a perfect 7-of-7 from the free throw line.

Concordia outrebounded Carleton 36-25, but the determining statistical factor in the game was the Knights red-hot shooting in the opening 20 minutes of play. For the first half, Carleton shot 72.7% (16-of-22) from the field. They also held the Cobbers off of the free throw line fro the entire first half. Carleton finished the game with 31 free throws as compared to only 15 for Concordia. The Knights connected on 23 of their attempts, shooting a solid 74.2% from the charity stripe. Concordia shot 60% on their foul shots (9-of-15) as they took all of their attempts in the second half.

GAME TIME: 2:00 pm

SERIES: Concordia leads 28-4

SERIES STARTED: 1976

LAST YEAR: Last year Concordia swept the series, winning 70-60 in St. Paul and then wiping out the Wildcats 75-49 in Moorhead. In the first game, Concordia did most of the damage in the first half as they connected on 50%(4-for-8) of their 3-point shots. They also shot 46.7%(14-for-30) from the field in the opening 20 minutes, cruising to a 37-29 lead at halftime. Debbie Slack had a "career" game for Concordia as she scored 16 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. In the return game in Memorial Auditorium, the Cobbers held St. Kate's to only 27.6% (16-for-58) from the floor en route to the 26-point victory. Cobber center Beth Drager finished with a game-high 15 points. She also came away with four blocks and seven rebounds.

SERIES HISTORY: Concordia has won the last two games in the series. St. Kate’s beat the Cobbers in the second game of the series in 2002-03 marking the first time they had beat the Cobbers in 24 games. The Concordia string of 24 wins dated all the way back to the 1980-81 season. Ironically, in the loss in 2002-03, Cobber forward Jamie Visness missed a free throw in the first half, ending her NCAA record streak of 69 consecutive made free throws.

THE INSIDE SCOOP

CONCORDIA (2-3 MIAC/4-4)

OK, SOMEONE TAKE THE PEA OUT OF THE WHISTLE or FOUL-CALLING FRENZY

Concordia is coming off a hard-fought 73-67 loss at the hands of two-time defending MIAC champion Carleton on Wednesday. The game started out with the Cobbers grabbing a nine-point lead at 16-7. They were then “done in” by a Carleton 28-8 run midway through the opening period. That spurt gave the Knights a lead they never relinquished and allowed them to take a 12-point lead into the break. In the first 20 minutes of the game, the two teams were whistled for seven fouls and attempted six free throws. In the second half, when the referees figured out that the silver thing around their necks actually made noise, the two teams were hammered for 32 fouls and shot 69 free throws. If you are scoring at home, that is 1.6 fouls per minute and 3.45 free throws every 60 seconds. I think both teams would agree that the fans came to see two great teams play, not three officials continually run back and forth to the scorers table.

ANNIE GET YOUR GUN

Concordia guard Annie Keeley has popped up in the national rankings in two different 3-point categories. The sophomore sharpshooter currently ranks fifth in 3-point field goal percentage (56.3), and is also 31st in 3-pointers per game (2.6). Keeley started the season by making at least two, “3-balls” in the first six games of the year. She has since been held scoreless from behind the arc in the Cobbers’ last two games. Maybe not coincidentally, Concordia has dropped their last two games as well. To further our argument for Keeley hoisting up the long ball we give you this: in the team’s first six games when the Cobbers went 4-2, Keeley averaged five, 3-pointers per game. In the last two losses, she has taken a total of four shots from 3-point range.

LADIES, START YOUR ENGINES

This is a warning for all you college basketball junkies. The Cobbers will begin a stretch where they will play seven games in 14 days. Starting next Saturday, Concordia will play seven times in two weeks. What makes the schedule even better for the basketball die hards is that six of those games will be in Memorial Auditorium.

THE INSIDE SCOOP

ST. CATHERINE (2-4 MIAC/3-5)

OOPS, SORRY ABOUT THAT

St. Catherine would be having a tremendous year if not for their little four-game hiccup at the end of November and beginning of December. The Wildcats won their first two games and have claimed two of their last three contests. Unfortunately for head coach Tim Kjar, you can’t excuse yourself in college athletics. The Wildcats sneezed their way to losses against UW-Eau Claire, St. Mary’s, Bethel and Gustavus. Their other loss in the conference came against St. Ben’s on Monday.

ROADCATS, HOPEFULLY NOT ROADKILL

The MIAC schedule makers were not kind to the Wildcats in the month of January. Of their 10 games during the calendar month, seven will be on the road. St. Kate’s is entering a crucial stretch where they will play four out of the next five games away from Butler Sports Center. If Kjar can coax his crew to a reasonable record in January, then the Wildcats might be able to make a run at the MIAC playoffs when they play four of their last six games at home.

STAT WRECKERS

As the week started, St. Kate’s was among the national leaders in 3-point field goal percentage, field goal percentage, 3-point field goals made and overall scoring offense. In fact, the Wildcats were ranked fifth in 3-point field goal percentage (41.8%). Unfortunately St. Kate’s ran into a defensive wall in the form of the St. Ben’s Blazers. St. Ben’s beat the Wildcats 75-46, and held St. Kate’s to 3-of-16 (18.7%) shooting from behind the arc. The 46 total points scored by the Wildcats was a season low and dropped them out of most of the national offensive categories.

TODAY’S MARQUEE MATCH-UP

Today the Gameday staff focuses on the point guard position. St. Kate’s guard Natalie Lyzhoft is among the league, and national, leaders in steals. She will be going against Concordia’s Mandy Pearson, who is coming off a seven turnover performance against Carleton. This could turn into an interesting 1 vs. 1 match-up for the entire contest.

Cobber Women’s Basketball Coach

Jessica Rahman

Jessica Rahman is entering her

second season as head women's

basketball coach in 2004-05. In

her first season in 2003-04, she

guided Concordia to a 21-7 mark

and brought the Cobbers all the

way to the championship game of the MIAC tournament.

Rahman, formerly Jessica Beachy, was a four-time All-American standout at Concordia and helped the Cobbers win the national championship in the 1987-88 season. She is the school's all-time leading scorer and was inducted into the Concordia Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998.

After graduating magna cum laude from Concordia in 1988, Rahman earned an M.A. degree in education from North Dakota State University in 1998.

In her four years at Concordia, she helped the Cobbers win 96 of the 118 games in which she played. In 1997-88 the Lady Cobbers went 29-2, captured their third-consecutive MIAC title, and won the NCAA Championship in Concordia's Memorial Auditorium. She was again named All-MIAC and a first team All-American. She was also honored with the NCAA Division III Player of the Year in 1988. To go along with her Player of the Year award, she was given the Honda Award as the NCAA Division III Female Athlete of the Year and earned one of the prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships.

Rahman ended her Concordia career with 2,101 points - 17.8 points per game. She still holds the MIAC record for career points with 1,491 - 17.8 points per game.

Concordia Women’s Basketball Preview

You’ll have to excuse Concordia head coach Jessica Rahman and the rest of the coaching staff if they feel like a college student in the mid 1990’s getting ready to watch the final episode of Beverly Hills 90210. Rahman is about to have the best seat in the house for the final episode of Mandy Pearson 56562.

Mandy Pearson (Sr., Watkins, Minn.), last year’s MIAC MVP, is back for her senior season in 2004-05 and has already garnered preseason All-American honors by . Last year Pearson finished the season by being ranked in the top 35 in the nation in three different statistical categories. She was eighth in assists per game (6.3), 29th in steals per game (3.5) and 32nd in free throw percentage (82.3%). She led the MIAC in assists (6.50 apg), was second in steals (3.73 spg) and 12th in overall scoring (13.7 ppg). She was also third in free throw percentage and fourth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.21). She has been gaining confidence and gathering accolades since she burst onto the scene as a freshman and was named to the MIAC All-First Year Team and led the nation in assists. The 2004-05 campaign should looks to be a coronation for one of the best players ever to suit up in a Cobber uniform.

Pearson will not be the only star in this year’s season-long episode. Last year Concordia had their best record since the 1990-91 season. The team finished with a 21-7 mark and made it all the way to the MIAC playoff championship game, a first in school history. Concordia also set a school record for biggest improvement in one season. The Cobbers improved a full seven games from the 2002-03 season.

Joining Pearson in the backcourt will be 2003-04 All-First Year Team member Annie Keeley (So., Grafton, N.D.). Keeley was second on the team in scoring last year with a 10.9 points per game average. She also finished the year as the team’s third leading rebounder (4.0 rpg), was ranked 14th in the league in 3-point baskets made and 15th in offensive rebounds (46). Keely also factored among the top players in the league in scoring, 3-point field goal percentage and assists. Her year of experience will help make the Cobber offense multi-dimensional and will help take some of the scoring load off Pearson and shooting guard Jamie Visness (Sr., Hallock, Minn.).

If the inside players can band together and help out the starring members of the Cobber perimeter, then Rahman could be looking at another award-winning season of Cobber women’s basketball.

St. Kate’s Women’s Basketball Coach

Tim Kjar

Tim Kjar joined the College

of St. Catherine coaching staff

in 1999 and he has led an

impressive turn around by the

Wildcats. The 2002-2003 MIAC

season proved to be the most

successful in St. Catherine

basketball history. The team

finished in a tie for fifth place in

the MIAC with a 14-11 overall record. Coach Kjar will continue working hard to build on the team's recent accomplishments and success.

Before coming to St. Kate's, Kjar spent four seasons (1995-1999) as head women's basketball coach at Riverland Community College in Austin, Minnesota. While there he guided a struggling program to respectability in women's community college basketball.

Coach Kjar earned degrees at the University of Nebraska at Kearney (BA-Physical Education) and Feather River Community College (AA). Tim was an all-league player at Feather River Community College.

Tim now resides in Minneapolis, MN with his wife, Erin.

St. Kate’s Women’s Basketball Preview – courtesy of the St. Kate’s SID

Last year, the Wildcats finished 8th in the conference (9-16 overall / 7-15 in MIAC play) due to being plagued with injuries. Despite the disappointment after finishing the 2002-03 season in the top half of the conference (14-11 overall), the Wildcats plan on building from last season's positives. This season, the Wildcatshave lost 2 senior four year starters, but with 3 returning starters and 5 other letter winners from a strong 2003-2004 team, 6th year Head Coach Tim Kjar, and 5th year assistant coach Gary Rufsvold, look to continue moving the Wildcats up in the MIAC standings.

The Wildcats return all conference player co-captain Jenna Martin (Jr, Grove Cty, MN), senior co-captain Natalie Lyzhoft (Sr, Maple Grove, MN), all first year MIAC player Kate Bremmer (So, Granite Falls, MN), and sophomore Sarah Schneider (So, Shakopee, MN), who all all made strong contributions to the Wildcats last year.

Last season, several Wildcat basketball records were set or broken. In 2003-2004, Lyzhoft broke the school record for assists in a season and currently holds the school career assists record with one season to add to the total. Lyzhoft is also 21 steals shy of the school career record and has a chance to break that mark as well. In addition, Martin scored a school record 34 points in a single game vs. Bethel and set a school record by going 18-18 from the free throw line as well. The NCAA record is currently 19-19 from the foul line.

The Wildcats open their season at home against University Minnesota Morris on Friday November 19th. The MIAC season begins Wednesday December 1st. at home against St. Mary's.
