Study Guide for Lab Quiz #5

Quiz worth 25 pts

Cover –Natural Selection (Predator/Prey); Video on evolution of the rock pocket mice; Population Estimation; Tapped conservation video

Possible Format – Fill-in the blank; Labeling; Short answer; Matching

Natural selection (Predator/Prey):

• Know what is meant by the terms evolution, natural selection, and co-evolution

• What is the source of variation in phenotypes in a population? (mutations)

• Know that mutations alone create new variations and natural selection edits the unfit phenotypes

• Use the evolution of the rock pocket mice in the video that we watched as an example of natural selection

o What color were the mice to begin with, before the lava flow that created the volcanic rocks in New Mexico? Remember they blended in with the sandy soil.

o How was the black colored mice created? It was through random mutation, an error in DNA replication that is passed on to new generation.

o After the black volcanic rock was formed, who selected the “unfit” white mice in the volcanic areas leaving only the black “fit” ones to survive? It was the predators, since white ones were the most visible. This is why today almost all mice caught in this region is black.

o Remember what Dr. Sean Carroll said at the end of the video “While mutation is random, natural selection is not”. Natural selection in this case was dictated by the color of the background soil, in other words, the environment.

• Define predation

o List three types of predation

o What do these linkages move through the food chain?

o List four reasons why predation is important

• In the predator/prey lab, know what the following items represent in nature

o Spoons, forks and knives

o M&Ms ,red beans, lentils and macaroni

o The cloth used

o One round

• How did this lab demonstrate natural selection?

• Give other examples of natural selection

Estimating population size:

• Who are the scientists that estimate population size?

• Define a population

• Why is that various sampling techniques and estimation methods are necessary to determine population size

• Know the two methods of pop estimation. Give examples of species suitable for estimation using each method.

o What is the grid system used for?

o Why use the “Capture, Mark & Recapture” method?

o What are the assumptions in the second method, capture, mark & recapture.

Tapped video on Conservation:

• Write five different issues related to bottled water.

• Compare the price of bottled water with gasoline

• Name three chemicals that have been discovered in bottled water

• What can you do to safeguard your health and the health of the planet?

• Write something new that you learned from this video
