Brochure

Advanced Placement Chemistry is a rigorous course taught with an emphasis on problem solving. It is equivalent to a full-year (two semester) college honors level chemistry

What is expected of me??

• Algebra 2 is required as a prerequisite. You should have passed with a minimum of a “C”. Knowledge of Trig would be helpful.

• A scientific calculator is required of every student. The student should be familiar with how to use these features (i.e., use the owner’s manual!)

• Homework is assigned on a regular basis and is considered part of your grade. Homework accounts for 15% of your overall grade. Most of the homework is problem solving.

• Laboratory work is performed on a regular (at least weekly) basis. All lab reports are graded. Any broken lab equipment must be paid for by the student. Lab reports account for 25% of the grade. All lab reports are to be done in ink in a bound notebook.

• When you are absent, all work needs to be made up. Follow the calendar on my weebly site New google classroom pages are being developed this year, so you will be able to follow school progress there as well.

things to know

WITH VERY LITTLE “MEMORIZATION” AND A WHOLE LOT OF PROBLEM SOLVING, THIS COURSE IS A TRUE CHALLENGE TO TEST YOUR ANALYTICAL ABILITY. STUDENTS RECEIVE TYPED HANDOUTS ON EVERY UNIT HIGHLIGHTING IMPORTANT DEFINITIONS AND FORMULAS. MUCH OF THE CLASS TIME IS LEARNING TO ATTACK PROBLEMS, WITH THE STUDENTS AT THE BOARD EXPLAINING ALMOST AS MUCH AS THE TEACHER.

An average of 30 to 40 problems is assigned per chapter, with each chapter taking one to two weeks to complete. You are required to do half of the assigned problems; test questions are often taken directly from homework.

Students taking the course could earn an average of 8 college credits with a good score (4 or 5) on the AP exam. Often, a score of 3 will earn 4 college credits. Policies vary widely among schools.

The current cost per credit for a freshman at University Park campus of Penn State is $747. For eight credits, that would be $5976! And that doesn’t include a textbook (the latest edition of our text retails at $220.00 from ) or lab fees & lab books.

Bottom line: if you’re going to have to take the course anyway, why not do it for free? The amount of money you can save is tremendous! [For rate info, go to ]

Rules for the chem room

• Be on time & bring necessary items.

• No horseplay – especially in lab!

• Excused absences: All tests or quizzes must be done within 3 days. After that, there will be a 5% deduction per day. A missed lab must be done ASAP, as chemicals and materials are put away.

• Illegal/unexcused days: Work will not be made up. You will receive a zero for any test, quiz or lab that day.

• Late lab reports: are deducted at 10% per day. Lab reports are worth 50 points.

• Homework, listed by chapter is due the day of the scheduled exam. You will be required to do 50% of listed problems.

• Cheating/copying: results in a zero for that assignment.

• Cell phones: are not permitted. Phones should be turned off & put away (pocket, backpack, front of room). A phone out will be confiscated & returned at the end of the day. Use of a cell phone during a test/quiz will be considered cheating.

• Stay out of lab unless told otherwise.

what if i break any of the rules?

Consequences include one or more of the following:

• A misconduct report, with a note home

• Time out in the office; this time must be made up with me after school.

• Removal from class permanently.

Is there anything else i should know?

← All students are required to take the national, standardized AP Chem exam, scheduled for Friday, May 7, 2021. The fee associated with the test is $95. Mark your calendar!!

← Policies regarding accepting of AP credits vary widely among colleges and universities. Students and parents are encouraged to contact the admissions office of the college(s) they’re interested in to find that information. A good website for reference is

(Please cut along the dotted line and return by Friday, August 28, 2020)

I have read the attached and am aware of the policies in effect in AP Chemistry class.
