Emphasized publicly by President Dr. Jonathan Veitch and reporting to Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of the College, Dr. Jorge Gonzalez, the inaugural AVP/ED of the Career Center will be a member of the President’s senior cabinet as the Center builds on existing exemplary career development programs and strengthens its partnerships with employers, alumni, and parents to enhance the career preparation and employment options for Occidental students and graduates. At the same time, the AVP/ED will broaden the Center’s reach and impact among students, faculty, trustees, community and business leaders, and friends of the College.The new Hameetman Career Center provides a state-of-the-art facility housing career programs with collaborative partner student services units, including National Awards and Pre-Health Advising. The recently opened Center reflects the $1.2 million priority the President and donors have established to support the professional development and successful outcomes of Occidental students. The Hameetman Center offers a bright, vibrant, heavily visited central campus location, complete with a comfortable student lounge, a seminar room, an interviewing suite, and a networking patio. Operational resources have also grown significantly in recent years, and plans are underway for staff expansion to 10 professionals once the AVP/ED joins the College in early 2016. The inaugural Associate Vice President and Executive Director builds on a strong foundation of high-impact career development services for Occidental students and alumni. In the last academic year, the Hameetman Career Center delivered over 224 programs, 64 more than the prior year, serving 3537 attendees on a campus of 2100 students. The Center also realized a 37% increase in counseling appointments over the prior academic year, with a third of student clients returning for additional career counseling appointments. Additional accomplishments include:Employer engagement on campus has increased by 142% since 2011-12. Oxy garnered the largest response rate to its alumni survey of the participating schools in the Higher Education Data Sharing Consortium (HEDS), over twice the average response rate. Eighty percent of Oxy grads were employed at the time of the survey, compared with 67% from other participating colleges.The Sophomore Success Program (SSP) engages second year students in StrengthsQuest assessments and individual appointments with career counselors. The SSP is slated to reach 75% of sophomores by 2017.The Senior Seminars initiative is a growing collaboration with faculty to deliver classroom training on career discernment, job search, and graduate school application. Last year, the Hameetman staff reached 35% of the senior class through this approach. InternLA leverages the expertise of the Hameetman staff and the generosity of Occidental donors to fund 40 students who participate in summer internships and professional development seminars. The program is structured to grow nationwide in 2016 with funded internships self-identified by students.Partnerships with job-readiness programs Fullbridge and Koru have provided leadership opportunities to 42 Occidental students since 2013. Primary responsibilities include:Oversee a team of seven professionals, with planned expansion ahead.Provide innovative and collaborative leadership to engage students in the multiple approaches to identifying and pursuing their chosen careers. Support actively the unique challenges of students from diverse backgrounds, including first-generation and international students.Serve as primary career liaison with trustees, alumni, parents, and other key stakeholders.Develop relationships across the College and externally to enhance the career development and post-graduate professional success of Occidental students.Work closely with the President and the Advancement Office to engage potential donors in support of the operations, services, and programs of the Hameetman Career Center.Set the strategic agenda, extending the current strategic plan and developing goals, objectives, and key performance indicators for outreach.Oversee annual destinations survey, ensuring significant knowledge rate, accurate reporting, and effective communication of results to faculty, parents, senior administration, and other stakeholders.Develop an assessment strategy to evaluate the success of Career Center services and programs and to gauge the learning outcomes of students utilizing the Center.Serve as an ambassador for Occidental College, participating actively in relevant association and networks, and establishing a Hameetman Career Center Advisory Board.The Successful CandidateThe Associate Vice President and Executive Director of the Hameetman Career Center will be a visionary leader in career services who brings a contemporary, creative, and global perspective on careers to the role and who will be a champion for Occidental College’s innovative approach to liberal arts education. As the primary architect of a newly imagined Center, the successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:Master’s degree in higher education, business, or related discipline.At least eight years of professional experience in a leadership role in career services, recruiting, advancement, higher education administration, human resources, student services, or related field.Demonstrated leadership in evidence-based and consensus-driven decision making leading to optimal results.Experience with supervision, team development, and collaboration across institutional departments.Expertise with strategic planning and budget fort with developing and sustaining relationships with employers, donors, and other partners to strengthen career opportunities for students.Understanding of the career ambitions of today’s students pursuing degrees in a non-vocational oriented liberal arts setting.Knowledge of current career development practices, employment trends, technologies, and innovative programming in the context of liberal arts education.Experience designing and delivering programs, services, and events that fully engage students in career discernment, industry awareness, and valued professional connections.Ability to cultivate, maintain, and enhance a vast network of employer relationships leading to internship and entry level opportunities for liberal arts trained students and graduates.Superior written and verbal communication skills.
