Cobber Wrestling Coaches

Doug Perry

Doug Perry, a 1965 Concordia

graduate, took over as head

wrestling coach in 1991 and

helped that team score two MIAC

Individual Championships and

place three wrestlers on the

Academic All-America squad.

Doug guides a program rich in athletic tradition, with a long list of All-Americans to its credit, and wrestlers who've attained equally fine academic honors.

In 2002 Perry was named the MIAC Coach of the Year. During his tenure at Concordia Perry has coached 1 All-American, 3 Academic All-Americans, 3 MIAC Champions and 22 MIAC All-Conference athletes.

Doug has 26 years of experience as a wrestling coach. He taught and coached at Worthington, MN, for 17 years prior to coming to Concordia as a coach and faculty member of the Concordia Physical Education Department.

Doug also serves as an assistant football coach. He lives in Moorhead with his wife Janet. They have three children: Jayson, Jodi, and Jeni.

Clay Nagel

Clay Nagel was hired in August

of 2004 as the co-head coach for

the Cobber wrestling team. He

was then named as full-time

head coach in December of 2004.

His first season as head coach

will be the 2005-06 season.

Nagel is a well-traveled wrestling veteran that brings a wealth of top-level experience to the program. For the past 17 years he has been the head coach at Frazee High School. While under the tutelage of Nagel, the Hornets won three Minnesota state championships and 13 section titles. He was named the Minnesota State High School Class "A" Coach of the Year in 1999. He has also been named the Region Coach of the Year seven times and the Sub-Section Coach of the Year on six different occasions. In 1999 he was elected the President of the Minnesota Wrestling Coaches Association.

During his high school coaching career he has compiled a 314-69-2 record in dual matches. He has coached 137 state entrants, 64 state placers, 32 state finalists and 17 individual state champions. He has coached seven high school All-Americans and three of his wrestlers went on to become college All-Americans.

TODAY’S MEET - THE INSIDE SCOOP

ON A ROLL

Concordia enters tonight’s dual match doubleheader on a four-match winning streak. The Cobbers participated in the Terry haws Dual Tournament at St. John’s last weekend and came away with a 3-1 record. After losing their first match of the tournament to Concordia of Wisconsin, the Cobbers rattled off three straight wins to finish second in Pool B of the Invitational. Concordia then backed those wins up with a victory over NCAA Division II Northern State on Wednesday. Concordia is one dual victory away from equaling their win total from last season. They are also two victories shy of posting the most dual match wins since the 1991-92 season.

DYNAMIC DUO

Concordia has been led by two wrestlers this season. Although many of the Cobber grapplers are enjoying their best year in collegiate wrestling, Lee Rahrlien and Dennis Kline continue to compete with the elite of the region. Both Rahrlien and Kline have suffered only one loss since Christmas break and both wrestlers have captured a bracket title at a major invitational. Rahrlien won the 157-pound consolation title at the Dickinson Classic on January 8. In that same invite, Kline lost in the championship match at 197. Kline’s win came in the championship flight at the Cobber Invite in November. Both wrestlers have very good chances to place in the top five of the region and also compete for a spot at the national tournament.

Cobber Last Match Recap – Concordia 27 at Northern State 18

ABERDEEN, S.D.-- For the second consecutive year Concordia wrestled NCAA Division II foe Northern State in a dual match, and for the second straight year the Cobbers scored 27 points their way to a victory.

This year, Concordia won six of the ten matches and claimed a 27-15 victory. The win improves the Cobbers' dual match record to 4-1 this season. Concordia recently went 3-1 at the Terry Haws Dual Tournament held at St. John's.

The match was decided in the final four individual bouts of the night. After falling behind 12-6 after the first four matches, the Cobbers claimed two victories by forfeit to take the lead at 18-12. With the match hanging in the balance, Thane Taylor (Fr., St. Cloud, Minn.), Lee Rahrlien (Jr., Graceville, Minn.) and David Ahmed (So., Conrad, Mont.) all won their match by a decision and Concordia was able to prevail by the 12-point margin.

Taylor, wrestling at 141, came from behind in the final minute of the third period to scratch out a 6-5 win. After Dustin Weege (Fr., Buffalo, Minn.) fell at 149, Rahrlien pulled away in the third period to win going away 7-3 at 157. Ahmed then had a near-fall in the first period to take a 7-4 lead and ended up winning 7-5 at 165.

Rahrlien has now won nine of his 10 matches since the Christmas break.

The lone win in the first three individual matches came at 197 when Concordia senior Dennis Kline (Sr., Plymouth, Minn.) pinned Todd Naasz in the second period. For Kline it is his seventh win since the start of the New Year. He is now 7-1 in his last eight matches.

Smokey McBride (So., Eagan, Minn.) and Wes Graff (So., Mankato, Minn.) notched the other two victories for the Cobbers. Both wrestlers won by forfeit.

2002-03 MATCH RECAP

Cobbers Get Taken to the Mat by MSU-Moorhead 40-9.

William Duppler (So., Valley City, N.Dak.) prepares to pin Jimmy Winter of MSU-Moorhead. Duppler was one of two Cobber wrestlers to win against the Dragons.

After three matches against MSU-Moorhead, the Cobbers trailed by a slim 10-9 margin and were threatening to win for the first time in 17 attempts against the Dragons. MSU-Moorhead proceeded to win the remaining six matches and beat Concordia 40-9.

The duo of Dennis Kline (So., Plymouth, Minn.) and William Duppler (So., Valley City, N.Dak.) continued to lead the way for the Cobbers. Kline, wrestling in the third match of the night at 197lb., won a hard-fought 4-1 decision over Cody Ranz. Duppler cut the Dragons lead to one when he pinned Jimmy Winter at 1:44 of the first period.

The rest of the night would belong to MSU-Moorhead, as they earned a forfeit at 125lb. and then won four of the next five matches by major decisions, technical falls or pins.

2004-05 MSU-Moorhead Season Preview

Having successfully passed last year’s initiation as a head college coach, Keenan Spiess is clearly focused on the future, and has every reason to believe his latest Minnesota State University Moorhead wrestling club is ready to add another sequel to the Dragons’ storied tradition on the mat.

MSU Moorhead finished 12-3 in dual competition and captured a 10th Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference title with a perfect 3-0 slate a year ago. This winter MSU Moorhead will shift to the North Central Conference for regional qualifying, but Spiess is confident the Dragons can handle the upgrade.

“We should have most of our starters with two or three years experience, and we’ll move our expectations up,” said Spiess, the 2003-04 NSIC Wrestling Coach of the Year. “I’d like to see us get at least four (wrestlers) to the nationals, and I think we have a chance to getting three All-Americans.”

Veterans, as always, will form a solid foundation. MSUM retains 16 lettermen, including seniors Eric Hageman (Fargo, ND), 174, and Josh Jansen (Breckenridge), 157, juniors Ben Keen (Pine River), 141, Danny Meyer (Wahpeton, ND), 149, John Schermerhorn (Frazee), 125, Tony Soderberg (Minot, ND), 184, and James Winter (Palmer), HWT, and sophomores Mike Aldridge (Minot, ND), 197, Greg Bunce (Pine City), 149, Brandon Kok (Beulah, ND), 149, Nick Kopiasz (Anchorage, AK), 165, Casey Pesta (Long Prairie), 141, Eric Roseen (Devils Lake, ND), 165, Skip Toops (New London), 157, Quentin Utley (Bemidji), 197, and Jordan Vallie (Belcourt, ND), 285.

Jansen finished 21-12 last winter and earned NCAA Division II All-American honors for an eighth place finish at the 2004 NCAA II National Championships. Hageman was 21-18, Keen 12-5, Kok, 9-7, Meyer 8-6, Winter, 6-2 and Vallie, 14-15. Six Dragons were named to the 2003-04 All-NSIC team, including Keen, 141, Meyer, 149, and Jansen, 157. Utley, 197, and Vallie, HWT, were honorable mention selections.

The Dragons’ newest recruiting class is well stocked with talent, and Spiess has ambitious plans for his latest batch of imports.

Freshmen Kelly Janke captured a pair of 135-pound Minnesota State titles at Frazee High School and Rockie Stavn of Bismarck Century High School claimed a North Dakota State title last year at 160 pounds. Janke was 129-32 lifetime for the Hornets.

MSU-Moorhead Head Coach

Keenan Spiess

A member of the Minnesota

State University Moorhead

wrestling family for nearly a

decade, Keenan Spiess

(SPEESE) has been named

the head wrestling coach at

MSUM. The announcement was made today by Dr. David Crockett, interim athletic director at MSU Moorhead.

Spiess, 31, replaces John Sterner, who retired last year after 15 seasons as head coach of the Dragons.

A four-year wrestling letterwinner and captain-elect of the Dragons as a senior, Spiess previously served as an assistant under Sterner. Spiess returned to the Dragon wrestling staff last year after four seasons as head coach at Fargo North High School.

During Spiess' tenure as head coach of the Spartans, Fargo North crowned three North Dakota State Class A individual champions. He was named the East Region Coach of the Year in 1999-2000.

A native of Fargo, ND, Spiess was named an NAIA honorable mention All-American as a sophomore and junior, and qualified for the national tournament again as a senior. A transfer from North Dakota State University and a tri-captain of the 1994-95 Dragons, Spiess claimed the NSIC 167-pound crown in 1995.

A two-time Spartan MVP, Spiess was a North Dakota State Class A individual runnerup at Fargo North.

2003-04 MATCH RECAP

Young Cobbers Get Pinned by MSU-Moorhead 40-0.

(Moorhead, Minn.)-- Despite a final score that had the Cobbers being shut out, the Concordia wrestling team battled NCAA Division II MSU-Moorhead through all 10 matches in their annual cross-town dual rivalry. The Dragons won six of the ten matches by decision and earned another victory through a forfeit. Seven of the nine wrestlers that competed for Concordia were first-year wrestlers seeing action in their very first collegiate dual meet.

The closest match of the night was in the 165-pound weight class where the Cobbers' David Ahmed (Fr., Conrad, Mont./Conrad HS) narrowly lost to the Dragons' Allen Huigens by a score of 4-3. At 141 pounds, Davis Alvesgard (Fr., Madison, Minn./Lac qui Parle Valley HS) lost a tough 7-5 decision to Shane Eskelson of MSU-M.

Other Cobber wrestlers that fell in matches that were decided by a decision were Eric Splichal (Garrison, N.Dak./Garrison HS) who lost 5-0 at 149 pounds, Lee Rahrlien (So., Graceville, Minn./C-G-B HS) who lost 10-1 to Josh Jansen, Ed Oehlers (Jr., North Branch, Minn/North Branch HS) who lost 5-1 at 197 and heavyweight Dan Kalkbrenner (Fr., Atwater, Minn./A-C-G HS) who also dropped a 5-1 decision.
