Nottingham is one of the most sought-after Universities in the UK in which to study medicine and also has one of the largest yearly intakes of medical students. We run a 5 year systems-based integrated course with the later phases delivered largely within clinical attachments. The course’s unique selling point is that all students undertake a period of research in year 3 leading to a BMedSci qualification alongside their eventual MB BS degrees. We also run a nationally-renowned 4 year graduate entry medical course, which starts with 18 months of problem-based learning and is delivered at the University’s Royal Derby Hospital campus. The Nottingham 5 year medical course has 250 new entrants each year, 10 of whom do a Foundation Programme before joining the main course. Much of the teaching in the first three years is delivered by the School of Life Sciences in the University although the School of Medicine has oversight and overall responsibility for the whole programme. The 4 year Graduate Entry Medicine programme accepts 90 students per year and is managed and taught entirely within the School. All 340 students come together for the final two and a half years of the course which are taught in NHS partner organisations based in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Lincolnshire. As well as teaching medicine, the School runs a BSc in Physiology and Therapeutics on its Derby campus and admits around 300 Post-Graduate Taught students per year to a variety of specialist masters courses. The post-holder will have overall strategic responsibility for all undergraduate and post-graduate taught activity in the School of Medicine, and will have direct day-to-day responsibility for the 5 year medical course and the later phases of medical teaching for all students. The problem-based learning phase of the Graduate Entry Medicine course is managed by a Director of UG Education for Graduate Entry Medicine and by the Head of the Division of Medical Sciences and Graduate Entry Medicine; they report to the post-holder for this activity. Post-Graduate Taught courses are led by the Director of PGT in the School of Medicine, who also reports to the post-holder. The current post-holder is Professor Jim Lowe who has led Medical Education in Nottingham with great skill and dedication over the last 7 years. Professor Lowe will step down in June 2015.
