THE INSIDE SCOOP

CONCORDIA (3-10-1 MIAC/4-15-1)

SENIOR SENDOFF

This weekend’s series marks the final time that four seniors will don the maroon and gold and step on the ice in the Moorhead Sports Center. The quartet of players has seen the women’s hockey program go from a team of one or two stars, to one that embodies the team concept. They have been a part of the unbelievably talented growth of women’s hockey. When they started playing, they were a rare breed of player who played the game because they had been given the opportunity to play from a young age. Nowadays, every player who plays college hockey has had the chance to cultivate her skills since she started skating. The entire Concordia athletic department would like to thank these four seniors for all their hard work, dedication and commitment to the team principle these past four years. Although the win total in your final season is where you set your goals, you have represented Concordia with class and dignity and have been tremendous assets to the “Cobber Nation”. The Gameday staff wishes all of you the best of luck as you journey forward from Concordia.

PLAYING THE FULL 60 MINUTES

Last weekend the Cobbers were victimized by three goals in the final 35 seconds of the game. On Friday, they allowed two goals in the final 35 seconds and came away with a tie, and on Saturday, they allowed a game-winning goal with 30 seconds remaining. Concordia lost a crucial three points last weekend. Instead of fighting for a realistic chance at the playoffs, Concordia will need to win their final four games and hope for a lot of breaks to go their way. However, stranger things have happened and you never know what’s going to happen next in the wild and whacky MIAC.

THE INSIDE SCOOP

ST. OLAF (9-4-1 MIAC/11-8-1)

CAN WE GET A CLINCH?

The Oles need one win to clinch their second consecutive playoff spot. Entering the weekend, St. Olaf has 19 points and the best that sixth-place St. Ben’s could get to is 20 points. A combination of one win or two ties will have the Oles packing their bags for the postseason. It was only four short years ago that St. Olaf finished on the bottom of the MIAC with a 1-17. Their ascent to the MIAC playoffs started slowly. They won one more game in the 2001-02 season, and then posted nine victories in 2002-03. Their climb was complete when they finished with a 11-7-0 record last season and claimed third place in the conference. The Oles lost their first game in the playoffs last year at Gustavus.

THE KILLER B’S

St. Olaf is led by the offensive duo of Lindsay Boeser and Susannah Brokl. Boeser, a freshman from Lakeville, Minn. leads the team in scoring with 12 goals and 15 assists. She currently ranks sixth in the MIAC in scoring in conference games. She has posted 23 points in the team’s 14 MIAC games this season. She is second in the league scoring by a freshman, and is also tied for fifth in the league in assists. She also leads the league in shorthanded points. Boeser’s buzzing buddy is sophomore Susannah Brokl. Brokl is second on the team in points (24) and leads the team in goals (14). Her total of 13 conference goals places her third in the MIAC. The pair has scored in all but three of the team’s games this season. In two of those three, the Oles were shut out, and in the third they lost as well. Hmmm – is there a correlation there?

CONCORDIA LAST SERIES RECAP

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 11

MOORHEAD-- With :36 remaining in the game, Concordia held a 2-0 and it looked as if the Cobbers would gain their fifth win of the season and snap their three-game losing streak with a shutout. Unfortunately for Concordia a college hockey game lasts a full 60 minutes. In the waning seconds of the game, Bethel unbelievably scored a pair of goals and snatched a sure victory away from the Cobbers. The two teams skated for an extra five minutes of overtime before finally settling for the 2-2 tie.

Concordia finally broke the scoreless tie in the second period when Hannah Impola took a feed from Kali Palmer on the right side of the goal and slid the puck into the open net after Moriarity had stood her ground to try and stop Palmer. For Impola, it was her fourth goal of the season. The Cobbers continued to attack the Bethel net and finished the period by outshooting the Royals 10-7.

Lindsay Czarnecki looked to add an insurance goal for Concordia when she slid the puck past Moriarity on a breakaway at 13:43 of the final period. Czarnecki made a nifty move as she drove hard from the right side and cut the puck across the face of the goal just inside the shoulder of the containing defenseman. She then cut hard to the left side of the goals and slid the puck past Moriarity for her team-leading eighth goal of the season.

Jenna Johnson seemed to have Bethel's number as she stopped the first 19 shots the Royals threw at the net. It was the 20th and 21st shots that sent the Cobbers home with a sour taste in their mouths. After Amy Beitzel pounded home a goal from just outside the crease with :35 remaining, Stephanie Williams scored the game-tying goal with only four ticks left on the clock.

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 12

MOORHEAD-- For the second game in a row the final 30 seconds in the game reared its ugly head for the Cobbers. Like an alien appearing from inside the body of an unsuspecting human in a science fiction horror film, the Cobbers were terrorized by a goal in the dying seconds of the game for the second consecutive contest.

The game started slowly for Concordia as they tried to shake off the effects of the bizarre ending on Friday night. After giving up two goals midway through the opening period, Concordia climbed their way back into the game by scoring a goal with less than four minutes to play in the first frame and then tacked on the equalizer less than a minute into the second period.

Paige Stone's wraparound goal on the power play gave Concordia new life in the first period after they started the game by allowing a power play goal and an even-strength tally less than two minutes apart. For Stone it was her fifth goal of the year - her best offensive output in her two-year career.

Brandie Dunn tied the game at 2-2 to start the second period and it appeared that Concordia would take control of the game. Bethel's Mary Barton quieted that theory when she scored the third goal of the game for the Royals at the 12:25 mark. Hannah Impola then brought Concordia level for the second time when she scored at 16:57. For Impola, it was her second point of the game as she picked up an assist on Dunn's goal earlier in the period.

The two teams played a scoreless third period until the final minute of the game. Heidi Govednik scored the game-winner for Bethel. It was her seventh goal of the season.

Jenna Johnson stopped 40 shots and was saddled with her 10th loss of the year. Kelly Moriarty made 32 saves for Bethel to pick up her second win of the season.

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 15 - St. Olaf 2 vs. UW-Steven’s Point 6

UW-Steven's Point scored four times in an eight-minute stretch of the second period, leading the sixth-ranked Pointers to a 6-2 non-conference win over the St. Olaf women's hockey team in Northfield Tuesday.

St. Olaf cut the advantage to 5-2 after third period goals by Lindsay Weier (Jr., Menomonie, Wis.) and Lindsay Boeser (Fy, Burnsville, Minn./Lakeville), but Liz Goergen's goal with just under five minutes left sealed the win for the Pointers.

UW-Steven's Point was led by Kim Lunneborg who connected on back-to-back goals to open the game with each assist from Anne Ninneman.

Lunneborg added an assist later in the game and Ninneman another assist as the Pointers extended their undefeated streak to 11.

Kerry Rollwagen (Sr., So. St. Paul, Minn.) stopped 38 shots for St. Olaf in a losing effort.

St. Olaf drops to 11-8-1 overall. Seven of the Oles eight losses have come to teams ranked in the top four in the West Region.
