Week One

Learning Activities

1. GRAMMAR AND PUNCTUATION PRACTICE TEST

Administer a practice test as a way of giving students feedback on gains in grammar competency in the first class meeting and in preparation for the final grammar test in Week Five.

1. Electronic Resources Familiarization Activity

Show students how to follow the links to online newspaper op ed pieces and to the services available with the Center for Writing Excellence via ecampus.

2. In-class Review of Persuasive Essay Activity

Faculty can make copies of the University of Phoenix Materials “Peer Review—Persuasive Essay” and have them ready to distribute to small groups of students as they pass around their papers for comment.

Week Two

Learning Activities

1. GRAMMAR REVIEW ACTIVITY

Have learning teams create a weekly list of their grammar or mechanics questions based on completion of the individual exercises. The list will become the talking points during class.

Option: Break the students into small groups. Have them peer-review the completed exercises and provide feedback with further explanation of how to correct any errors.

3. Sample Case Study—“Arthur Reed and The Blue Grocery Store”

Divide the class into small groups and distribute copies of the University of Phoenix Material “Practice Case Study.” Allow time for the students to read the sample. Have the students approach the study from the point of view of a consultant called in by the store owners. Students will use critical thinking to analyze the case. They should chart their questions prior to posing a solution.

As a class, discuss the essential steps when analyzing a case study. Use the small groups’ solutions as examples.

Week Three

Ask students to bring two copies of their draft to allow in-class peer review. Use the
