Guide to Employability

Your future career is important to us. The University of Exeter offers a range of opportunities for you to develop your skills, experience, confidence and knowledge in order to successfully gain employment or progress to further study on completion of your degree.

The Careers and Employment Service provide a range of advice and support functions such as looking at CVs, giving careers guidance and organising a range of skills sessions to enhance your employability. The team is based in Reed Mews and open 9am – 5pm Monday to Friday, (10am start on Wednesday).

The Exeter Award is an achievement award for undergraduate and taught postgraduate students at the University of Exeter. The Award is designed to enhance the employability of University of Exeter graduates by providing official recognition and evidence of extra-curricular activities and achievements. These include: attendance at skills sessions and training courses, active participation in sporting and musical activities, engagement in work experience and voluntary work.

The Law Careers Fair is on the 3rd and 4th November 2010 from 1:30 – 4:30pm in Cornwall House

In your department:

• 3-2-1 workshops – a careers advisor delivers a mandatory careers session which is tailored to your particular discipline. Look out for details sent by your Employability and Work Placement Officer for dates and locations.

• Employability events – the College will run certain employability events which bring in a cross section of employers to engage in activities such as networking evenings, mock interviews, talks on professions and panel discussions.

• Specific careers service provision in your department – our dedicated careers advisors, Tom McAndrew (Sociology & Philosophy, IAIS, Politics and Graduate School of Education) and Mary McCarthy (Law) will run discipline-specific careers advisor sessions such as CV clinics and application form assistance. Look out for details sent by your Employability and Work Placement Officer and your Departmental Administrator.

• Employability and Work Placement Officer – developing work placement opportunities and supporting all aspects of employability activities in the College.
