Course Description: English 4 FL College Prep is a Senior English course that incorporates reading and writing study through writing a variety of informative texts using grade-level writing craft and through the in-depth reading and analysis of informational selections in order to develop critical reading and writing skills necessary for success in college courses. This course prepares students for successful completion of Florida college English courses. The benchmarks reflect the Florida Postsecondary Readiness Competencies necessary for entry-level college courses.
Course Objectives: The content will include, but not be limited to, the following:
demonstrating successful reading of argument, including recognizing bias and supporting details; demonstrating successful reading of fact and opinion, including recognizing inferences and main ideas; demonstrating knowledge of a variety of organizational patterns and their relationships in the comprehension of text, including recognizing purpose and tone of informational reading; demonstrating successful understanding of vocabulary in context and through writing effective sentence structures; effectively implementing patterns of paragraph development; recognizing and solving common sentence development problems; reading and modeling mentor essays; and understanding and using language, grammar, and mechanics effectively.
Writing – Students will write on assigned topics on a weekly basis. Writings will vary in length and type. They will be required to complete one research paper per semester.
Vocabulary – Students will be introduced to new vocabulary words on a weekly basis. Students will study vocabulary words in a variety of ways in order to master each word and be able to add that word to their personal word bank
Grammar – Students will study grammar on a daily basis.
Participation - Participation is key. Every student will come to class prepared and ready to contribute.
Major Coursework-
• Students will compose one original research paper/project per semester.
• Subject and content will be determined at a later date- you will be given at least a two week notice on all major assignments, Do Not Procrastinate
• All research papers must follow proper MLA format requirements as outlined in rubrics.
Required Texts:
Informational Texts: Various Selections to be determined by teacher and students/may be uploaded on a flash drive as needed.
Other Texts: TBA
Materials/Supplies needed for class EVERYDAY: Notebook Paper (loose leaf), Pencils, Pens (blue or black ink only), 3-Ring Binder, Spiral Notebook, and a Flash Drive.
Evaluation/Grading Procedures: There will be point values to all assignments. A small daily grade may be only worth 10-20 points, but a major project may be 200 points. All points go into a “point bucket” to be averaged at grading time. Thus, any credit you earn on any assignment is better than a zero. Never skip an assignment because you didn’t understand all of it.
Semester Grades are determined in the following manner:
Class assignments 70%
Projects and assessments 30%
Labelle High School Grading Scale
A 90-100 % D 60-69 % X= incomplete these grades revert to 0’s
B 80-89 % F 0-59 % Z= coursework not attempted or cheated. Scores are 0’s
C 70-79 % 0= unexcused absence

LHS, District and Mr. Hendren’s Policies- Attendance/Make Up/ Late Work
Attendance
Regular attendance at school is most important for success. Establishing good attendance and punctual habits now will carry over when you go to work. During the semester, any student who misses six (9) days, or 10% of a regularly scheduled class, due to unexcused absences is required to take a competency exam in order to show subject mastery in the course. If a student fails the competency exam, he or she will receive an F in the course and will not receive credit. Also, Students may not be absent during final exam days without a doctor’s note. Exams may not be made up without a medical excusal unless there is an extreme emergency.
Any student who is absent must bring a note from his or her parent or guardian within 48 hours of returning to school stating the date(s) of the absence and the reason for the absence. Absences will only be excused if they are for a reason set forth as excusable in district policy. This includes absences from class that are a result of checking-out of school. Please remember that at the high school level attendance is taken on a by-period basis.
A note from a parent or guardian does not guarantee that an absence will be excused. Parent/guardian notes will only be accepted for seven (7) days of absence during a semester. Any other absences during the semester will require other documentation such as a doctor’s or dentist’s note, military excusal form, proof of death in family, etc. Absences must be excused in order for students to have the opportunity to make up the work they have missed. According to district policy, students have two days (2) for every day they have been absent to complete missing work from an excused absence.
Absences may be excused for the following reasons only:
a) Illness of the student – Parent/guardian notes are acceptable for up to five (5) days in a trimester for student illness.
b) Death in the family
c) Emergency in the family (must have administrator approval)
d) Religious holiday of the specific faith of the student
It is also important to know that Florida law requires the school district to report when a student accumulates fifteen (15) unexcused absences in a 90 calendar day period. When this information is received by the state of Florida, the student will lose his or her driver’s license and will be required to have thirty days (30) of perfect attendance in order to be eligible to have the license reinstated.
In addition, students who exhibit patterns of poor attendance will be referred to the Truancy Intervention Program (TIP) for additional measures related to improving attendance and achievement.
Pre-Arranged Absences: Absences that are planned in advanced may be approved if they are for educational purposes or for some family situations only if a student’s overall attendance is otherwise excellent. Pre-arranged absences count as parent note days. Students whose families are leaving the area for work purposes before the end of the school year will only be approved if their attendance throughout the year has been acceptable. Many privileges and opportunities at LHS are based on good attendance at school.
LATE WORK POLICY & MAKE-UP WORK
In an effort to teach students responsibility while giving them opportunity to salvage their grade the late work rule is:
Late work is defined as work that is not turn in to the receiving teacher before or on the date it is due.
If a student is absent “excused” the make-up policy will apply (see below). If the student is truant the late work policy will apply.
When a student misses a due date on an assignment they will have an opportunity to turn the work in late with these requirements.
Daily work:
Students are allowed to turn in late work for a maximum of three days beyond the original due date.
Consequences of late work:
• Day 1 minus one letter grade
• Day 2 minus two letter grades
• Day 3 minus three letter grades
• After the third day work not turned in will be recorded as a zero.
Projects:
If the assigned work is a project that was assigned more than one week prior to the deadline students have one day to turn it in late for a maximum grade of 50%.
Students that have missed more than five assignments during a nine-week period will be referred to their counselor and AP.
If a student appeals directly to a teacher, the teacher has the option of negotiating with a student dependent on the student’s specific needs or conditions concerning late work.
MAKE-UP WORK
It is the student’s responsibility to contact the teacher on the day he/she returns to class to determine any course work that needs to be made up. Students will be permitted a two day grace period per absence for the first day of absence and a one day grace period for each consecutive day of absence thereafter to submit work. .
Students absent because of a school activity are to have the course work made-up BEFORE the activity absence unless prior arrangements have been made with each teacher. If a student was present when a teacher assigned course work it is due on the day of return. However, certain projects (i.e. major projects, research papers, etc.) will be due on deadline date unless prior arrangements have been made by the school. LaBelle High School will collect assignments for parents to pick up for any student who will be absent three (3) or more consecutive days of school. Parents/guardians must contact the attendance office to arrange for the pickup of class assignments. A 24-hour turnaround time is needed
