Review Sheet- Football

Mr. Hughes

Football is mainly an outdoor game played by two opposing teams. The principal types of football played today are American, association (soccer), Canadian, Australian, Gaelic, and Rugby. Touch and Flag football are informal variations on the game.

American Football

1. The typical football field is 100 yards with two end zones. The end zones are 20 yards long.

2. There is an offense and a defense with 11 players on each side of the ball. The ball is spotted on the field or a yard line called the line of scrimmage.

3. The offense always has an offensive strategy as they run plays to “trick” the defense. The defense can be in any formation they choose.

4. The object of the game is to get the ball into the end zone by pass plays, running plays or kicked through the goal posts to score points.

5. The quarterback runs the offense and the offensive line protects that person. The line consists of the center that snaps (hikes) the ball and the guards on the outside.

6. The running back runs, blocks, and catches short passes. The wide receivers run long or short routes to catch passes. Tight ends block and catch short passes.

7. The defense consists of tackles, defensive ends, linebackers, and safeties.

Rules

1. The offense has a certain amount of “tries” called downs to make it to a first down. The first down takes ten yards to get to the next one and there are four downs or you turn it over to the opposing team.

2. The quarterback can pass one of two ways: a forward pass and lateral pass. A forward lateral is a penalty.

3. The offense cannot use their hands to hold or throw a player down, but the defense can use their hands as long as they don’t grab a facemask.

4. Before a snap the offensive line gets set and cannot move, but the defense can move. If the offense does move, they will get an “offsides” call.

5. When a penalty is called by one of the five officials on the field, they will throw a flag and the line of scrimmage will move a certain amount of yards according to the penalty.

Facts

1. The professional American football league is called the NFL, which stands for the National Football League. The championship in the NFL is called the Super Bowl.

2. The NFL is divided into two sections: the AFC and the NFC and the winner of each play in the Super Bowl.

3. College football is also very popular, but due to the large number of schools, they have a Bowl Championship Series to determine their champion. The teams with the best records and highest rankings get to play for the championship.
