Course Policies:

Student Work: Students will be expected to complete assignments outside of class time on a regular basis.  All students are expected to read class material, think critically, and write effectively. Students are expected to use complete sentences, proper grammar, and correct spelling throughout the class.

Composition Notebook: Students will be required to obtain a composition notebook which is to remain in class. Students will complete warm-ups in this notebook.

Line Paper/Spiral Notebook: Students will participate is multiple occasions of notetaking, writing activities, and other classwork. The student may choose to use traditional college ruled line paper or may want to use a spiral notebook if losing assignments/notes has been a problem in the past. These notes/activities may be used for upcoming tests and quizzes so it is important that students keep track of them throughout the entire course.

Extra Credit: Opportunities for extra credit will be offered from time to time.  Extra credit is defined as extra work above and beyond the usual classwork, not work used to cover up missing work. Extra credit will NOT be given if a student is missing any assignments.

Late Work: Another important part of middle school curriculum is that of responsibility and the importance of deadlines. It is for that reason that each day a student DOES NOT turn in an assignment on its assigned due date, without an appropriate excuse (sick, absent, etc.), -4 points will be deducted from the assignment. Parents will be contacted via email if a student is late on a major assessment project.

Absences: If a student is absent, it is HIS/HER responsibility to get all late work from the teacher and return within the appropriate amount of school days in accordance with the absence. If a project is assigned while a student is present, the due date stands, regardless of absences between distribution and due date.

Class Expectations:

• Students are expected to treat the teacher and other students with respect at all times. Offensive language and disrespect is not acceptable in this class and will be dealt with in accordance with school policy.

• Students are expected to be in their seats, prepared for class, and working on the warmup when the bell rings. Being prepared for class means having all materials, notebooks, books, pens, etc. out and ready.

• Pay attention. Talking while the teacher is instructing or while other students are presenting will not be permitted. Listen the first time directions are given.

• Students will stay in their seats at all times unless otherwise directed by the teacher. This includes getting up to sharpen pencils, get a tissue, etc. At the end of the period, the teacher dismisses you, NOT the bell.

• The phrase “I don’t know” is never an acceptable answer. All students are expected to give their best effort; complacency is not acceptable in this class.

Class Materials:

All students will need the following:

1 composition notebook

1 folder for ELA notes

Pens (blue or black ink ONLY)

Pencils with a good eraser

College ruled paper/spiral notebook

Agenda – **given to student by school**

Class Rewards:

Classroom rewards are based off of good behavior. Students who go above and beyond throughout the week have the chance to earn PBIS points, and can cash those in for prizes in the office or in my room. Prizes in my classroom can only be purchased on Fridays.

I expect everyone to behave and follow the rules of the classroom at all times. This will create a safe place for all of us to learn. If rules are not followed the following consequences will arise.

Major Violations to rules will be handled immediately by an administrator outside of the classroom.
