Writing a Winning Scholarship Essay
(Adapted from Miramar College’s Scholarship website)
Many scholarships require a personal essay be submitted with the application. Some also require letters of recommendation. Here are some helpful tips:
✓ Apply only if you are eligible.
✓ Complete the application in full. Print neatly. Don’t leave anything blank.
✓ Submit typed essays only. No handwritten essays! Use a font that is legible and easy to read. Make sure the essay is the correct length-not too short or too long.
✓ Include your name on each page of your essay on the top right-hand corner.
✓ Put the scholarship title on your first page (i.e., “San Diego Continuing Education Scholarship”)
✓ Write a rough draft first. It may be helpful to brainstorm ideas and/or to write an outline. Get help if you need it from an instructor, tutor, counselor, classroom aide, scholarship office. or anyone trained to review scholarship applications and essays.
✓ Make sure you address the specific essay questions thoroughly. Often there are multiple parts, so be sure to cover each.
✓ Tailor your essay to the specific scholarship. If it’s a community-service based scholarship, focus on your involvement in community service. If it requires you to go to college, talk about your college plans.
✓ Have one to two other people review a clean copy of your essay. Have them check for grammar, content, etc.
✓ Keep a file of everything you send out. Be sure to keep a copy of everything.
✓ If a letter of recommendation is needed-ask the person in advance. Give him/her a copy of your essay and the scholarship requirements. Make sure this person knows the deadline!
✓ Pay close to attention to the deadlines. Most applications are not considered if they are late.
