International Studies

Robert B. Bailey Scholarship for Minority Students through CIEE

This fund supports minority students who wish to participate in any CIEE educational program including study, work, voluntary service, and internship programs. These awards are need-based. See Center for International Studies at 758-5938 for additional information or get information on-line at .

Peter Bondy Scholarship

Funds available for study with focus on Latin America. Deadline for spring is October and for summer/fall is March. Contact the Center for International Studies for further information at 758-5938.

Boston University

Study abroad grants are awarded for Boston University program participants who demonstrate financial need, w/minimum grants of $500 for semester or $400 for summer. Merit scholarships for $300 are available for students with a GPA of 3.5 and above. Program-specific grants are awarded to students in the Dresden, Moscow, Niger and Padova programs. Bowman Travel Grant (through CIEE)

Awards to students participating in program in non-traditional destinations like Central and South America, the Caribbean, Asia and Africa. Must be a CIEE program. Applicants must demonstrate both academic preparation for their intended program and financial need. Deadline for application is APRIL 1 for Summer, Fall and Academic Year or OCTOBER 26 for Spring programs. Contact CIEE at .

Bridging Scholarships for Study Abroad in Japan---Deadline Octobe 3

The Association of Teachers of Japanese (ATJ)’s Bridging Scholarship program will award 30 scholarships to American students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan in Spring 2002. Undergraduate students majoring in any field of study are eligible to apploy for these scholarships: Japanese language background is not a requirement.

Butler University, Institute for Study Abroad

General scholarships ranging from $500 to $2000 are available, as well as special designated scholarships for the University of East Anglia and the University of Leeds. Travel grants are also available to cover airfare costs on Butler ISA group flights. Contact CIS or Butler at 1-800-858-0229 for more information.

Casa Artom Fund for Italian Studies

Scholarships are made available to one or two students each semester who will be participating in the WFU program in Venice. Well-qualified students who can demonstrate need are eligible to apply. Students should contact Peter Kairoff, Department of Music, kairoff@wfu.edu, or 758-5369.

CIEE International Student ID Travel Grants

To encourage U.S. students considering an education experience in a Third World country. Awards are made based on need as well as merit. Application proposals should be made to CIEE. Freeman-ASIA Program

Awards for Study in Asia. Need based awards for undergraduates from $3,000-$7,000. Contact IIE for further information. Application and information available at or ASIA@ or call 212-984-5542.

Freeman SIT Grant

Merit scholarship is available for SIT Study Abroad Programs in China, Viet Nam, Mongolia.

Awards are based on academic merit and demonstrated interest in Asia. Grant recipients complete an independent field project and help promote intercultural understanding and cooperation between the people of the United States and Asia. For more information visit

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Competition

(Open for the winter/spring term of academic year 2001-2002)

The Gilman Scholarship Program, sponsored by the United States Dept. of StatesBureau of Educatinal and Cultural Affairs, and administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE), lowers barriers to undergraduate study abroad by providing awards of up to $5,000 to undergraduates demonstrating financial need.

Because of the program’s focus on students with financial need, the current cycle of competition is open only to students receiving federal Pell Grant funding at the time of application.

David Hadley/Worrell House Scholarship Fund

Provides a scholarship to an undergraduate student who otherwise qualifies for the Worrell House program, but who would incur excessive financial sacrifices without the scholarship. Inquiries should be directed to Dr. Paul Orser in the Dean of the College Office at 758-5311 or by e-mail at orser@wfu.edu. Recommendations are then sent to the Financial Aid Office for consideration.

Hubert Humphrey Studies Abroad Scholarship

Awarded on the basis of need and merit to undergraduate students participating in the Wake Forest programs in London or Venice. Inquiries should be directed to Dr. Paul Orser (at 758-5311 or by e-mail at orser@wfu.edu) in the Dean of the College Office for students going to London and Dr. Peter Kairoff (at 758-5369 or by e-mail at kairoff@wfu.edu) in the Department of Music for students going to Venice. These program directors will then send their recommendations to the Financial Aid Office for consideration.

IES (Institute for International Education of Students)

Merit awards up to $3000/semester available for study on IES programs. 3.5 GPA required. Application deadline on or before May 1. There are also $500 - $1500 need-based scholarships, with a deadline of October 15th for Spring, May 1st for Fall and full-year programs. Minority Merit Scholarships for $3000 to $5000 are available for semester programs. Summer scholarships for $500 to $1000 are also available, with an April 1 deadline. IIE Grants-in-Aid Competition (Institute for International Education)

$500 grants are available to students wishing to study overseas. Application deadline is April. Contact IIE at 713-621-6300 extension 31 or 16 for applications or further information.

ISA (International Studies Abroad)

$1000 for summer, $2500 for academic year, $1000 for fall, winter, spring study for participation in one of the ISA programs in Spanish or French-Speaking countries. Minimum GPA of 2.75, one completed year of college, and one completed year of college level Spanish/French required. Deadline for Summer and Fall – March 30th. For Winter/Spring - October 30th. Ivy Hixson Fund

Awards given to provide assistance to students studying in the WFU progam in London. Interested students should contact Dr. Paul Orser in the Dean of the College Office at 758-5311 or by e-mail at orser@wfu.edu.

Luce Scholars Program

A program in which a group of eighteen highly qualified young leaders from a variety of professions will spend an experiential year working in East and Southeast Asia. An applicant must have the B.A. degree and be no older than 29. Wake Forest may nominate two persons from its seniors and alumni. Contact Susan Faust, Office of Special Projects, 207 Reynolda Hall. MacAnderson Scholarship

Awards of $2,000 made to students participating in programs at a European University with a foreign language component. Applications for this scholarship may be obtained from the Financial Aid Office (4 Reynolda Hall) or call 758-5154.

Marshall Scholarship

Thirty scholarships are awarded annually for two years of study in a degree program at a British university. Applicants must be able to explain their reasons for choosing a specific university. Candidates must be under 26 years of age, and preference will be given to unmarried students. Mellon Fellowship

This fellowship in the humanities is for promising college seniors or recent graduates wishing to begin graduate study for careers in university teaching and scholarship. (Eligible fields are the traditional humanities disciplines, including history, but not the creative or performing arts. American studies, other area studies, and certain social science programs are also eligible if the emphasis in subject and method is substantially humanistic.) Candidates must be nominated by this institution and may take the fellowship to a graduate school of their choice in the United States or Canada. NSEP SCHOLARSHIP

These scholarships are available to students who study in critical world areas such as Africa, Asia (China and Japan), Eastern and Central Europe, Latin and South America and the Middle East. There must be a strong language component in the student’s program. Science, political science, history, business and economics majors are especially encouraged to apply. Awards may be as large as $8,000 for a semester. Interested students should contact the Center for International Studies at 758-3890

Rhodes Scholarship

A two-year grant to study for a degree at Oxford University. Thirty-two scholarships are awarded annually to exceptional students. Candidates must be between 19 and 25 years of age. Richter Scholarship

Scholarships of up to $5,000 are available for competitive independent study or research projects, requiring travel away from Winston-Salem, for undergraduate and graduate students. International projects are especially encouraged. Each student will be required to have a faculty mentor for the project. Rotary Foundation International Ambassadorial Scholarships

A scholarship to “further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries.” Students apply to study or train in another country where Rotary Clubs are located. Applicants are ineligible for the scholarship if they are a Rotarian or a descendant of a living relative who is a Rotarian. Students have the choice of applying through the local Rotary Club by contacting the campus representative at Wake Forest of through their hometown club. Scales International Studies Scholarships

Available to all students including seniors who wish to do post-graduate study. Selection will be based on academic ability, financial need and the originality of the program. Application forms are available in the Center for International Studies. Deadline for spring is October and for summer and fall is March.

Lowell and Anne Tillett Eastern European Scholarship

Funds given for study in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. Application for spring study abroad are made in October and in March for study abroad in summer and fall. Contact the Center for International Studies for details.

Harry S. Truman Scholarship

Awarded on the basis of merit to students who are college juniors. The Truman Scholarship recognizes students who have extensive records of public and community service, and have shown strong academic performance. The ideal candidates are committed to careers in government of elsewhere in the public sector, have outstanding leadership potential, and wish to influence public policies. Applicants should possess intellectual strength and analytical abilities, and plan to attend graduate school to prepare for their careers. Wake Forest University may nominate three students. (Applications are

WFU/China Program Scholarship

Funds of up to $1,500 are available from SASASAAS on a need basis for students on this program. Application must be made at the same time you apply for the program in China. See Center for International Studies for applications.

WFU Study Abroad Scholarship

Scholarships of $2,000 for semester and $1,500 for summer are available to undergraduate students who have a minimum GPA of 3.0. Applications may be obtained in the Center for International Studies. The deadline for spring study is October. The deadline for summer and fall is March.
