ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

? Villanova has earned the CAA Football Team Academic Excellence Award for having the highest GPA out of all 12 teams in the league in each of the last two academic years.

? In the most recent release of NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) data, Villanova was one of just six Division I schools and three who play FCS football to have both their football and men's basketball teams be publicly recognized for having a multi-year APR score that ranked in the top 10 percent of their sport nationwide.

? Villanova had 46 studen-athletes earn the CAA Commissioner's Academic Award for having a GPA higher than 3.2 in 2017-18. This was the highest number of any CAA Football school.

? Villanova had three student-athletes earn Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area honors during the 2017 season. Offensive lineman Matt Donoghue, punter John Hinchen and defensive lineman Ricky Young were each voted to the Academic All-Area squad for the combination of having a GPA above a 3.0 and for making key contributions on the field.

THIS WEEK'S NEWS AND NOTES

TODAY'S GAME ? Towson History: Saturday's game against Towson will be the 15th all-time meeting be-

tween the Wildcats and Tigers. Villanova currently leads the series by a 9-5 margin and have won four of the last five meetings between the schools. Towson is 2-5 in its previous seven trips to Villanova Stadium.

? Conference Opener: Villanova and Towson will each be playing their CAA opener on Saturday afternoon. Since joining what was then the Yankee Conference in 1988, the Wildcats are 23-8 all-time in conference openers. That record includes victories in five of the last six CAA openers. The Wildcats lost last year's CAA opener at Albany by a score of 19-10 in overtime.

? Home Opener Success: Villanova has gone 26-7 in home openers since becoming an FCS program in 1985, including six straight victories in its home opening game since 2012.

VILLANOVA NOTEBOOK ? Starting Strong: Villanova improved to 2-0 to begin the season for the first time since it

won the first five games of its national championship season in 2009.

? Time of Possession: Villanova once again won the time of possession battle, as it held the ball for 33:56 in the game. That included having possession for more than 18 minutes in the second half to help thwart any chances of Lehigh mounting a comeback bid. In their season opener at Temple last week, the Wildcats had possession of the ball for 38:39. The team's average time of possession of 36:18 through the first two games of the season is currently ranked sixth among all FCS teams.

VILLANOVA OFFENSE ? Passing for 5,000: In last week's win over Lehigh, senior quarterback Zach Bednarczyk

became the eighth quarterback in program history to reach the 5,000 yard passing mark. Bednarczyk now has 5,091 passing yards in 31 career games.

? Moving the Sticks: Villanova tallied 22 first downs after having 26 in the season opener at Temple last week. The last time the Wildcats had 20+ first downs in consecutive games was in 2016 against Delaware in the regular season finale and Saint Francis (Pa.) in the first round of the FCS playoffs.

? Quick Turnaround: Villanova turned a 3-0 deficit into a 14-3 lead in a span of less than three minutes. Sophomore running back Justin Covington got the Wildcats on the scoreboard with his first career touchdown with 1:34 left in the first quarter, while senior slot receiver Jarrett McClenton caught a 62-yard touchdown pass at the 13:47 mark in the second quarter.

? McClenton's Career Day: Senior wide receiver Jarrett McClenton had a career day with six receptions for 114 yards and two touchdowns. He set new single-game career highs in receiving yards and touchdown receptions in addition to tying his previous career high with six catches in the game. McClenton's 62-yard reception for a score in the second quarter was also the longest reception of his career. He has made 11 catches for team highs of 177 yards and three touchdowns in the first two games of the season.
