Graduate Waivers and Scholarship

Graduate Waivers and Scholarship

Graduate College Fellowships and Graduate Tuition Scholarships have historically been annually allocated to colleges for distribution among academic units. These funding sources are to recruit and retain top domestic and international degree seeking graduate students.

1. Graduate College Fellowships are centrally allocated cash-based awards that provide financial aid for student support. Funding for these comes from set-aside funds. Eligibility for Fellowship awards requires degree-seeking status, a minimum admit or continuing GPA of 3.0 or higher and enrollment in a minimum of 3 graduate units.

2. Graduate Tuition Scholarships (GTS) are true waivers of tuition with no cash basis. Colleges allocate these funds.

• GTS awards can be used to waive tuition but not miscellaneous fees.

• Eligibility for GTS awards requires degree-seeking status, a minimum admit or continuing GPA of 3.0 or higher and enrollment in a minimum of 3 graduate units.

3. Differential tuition and Program Fee Set Aside Funds are cash based financial aid allocated by colleges. Financial aid is obtained by 'setting aside' 17% of differential tuition and program fee revenue.

• Each year, the amount is budgeted based on individual college’s budgets for master’s degree fees.

• To be eligible for these funds, students must demonstrate financial need by using FASFA or quasi-FASFA (for international students). The budget is not adjusted for over / under collections during the year, but may change year to year. No more than 10% of the budget should be carried forward into the next fiscal year per Provost's Office.

4. Scholarships are cash based financial aid at the college level from donor-provided funds.

• Funds may contain donor restrictions to certain student populations/attributes.

5. Graduate Assistantships are offers of employment that provide additional benefits.

• Students with Grad Assistantships must work during the semester and must be in good academic standing and eligible for employment in the US.

• Graduate Assistants/Associates are considered in-state students for tuition purposes. The in-state tuition is covered by the ERE associated with the salary and covers 50% if student is less than half time or 100% if half time or more.

o If the ERE and tuition remission amounts are funded by grants, indirect cost recovery or by any other outside organization that pays cash, the remission amount is an increase to tuition distributed to the college.

o If the ERE and tuition remission are funded from State accounts, no tuition is distributed to colleges.

• An assistantship covers health insurance if the student is enrolled in a plan, and provides a bookstore discount.

6. Incentive Scholarships and Waivers from the Graduate College are central funds that support degree-seeking graduate students.

• Scholarship awards are both cash and non-cash based. The cash based awards are Graduate College fellowships and the non-cash based are Graduate Tuition Scholarships that apply to tuition only.

• The centralized awards often match other funding resources, e.g. endowment generated funds, federally funded training grants, and special one-time faculty retention packages.

• Please check with the Graduate College regarding use of these funds to determine whether the funding is cash based or a waiver.
