The Department proposes to address the following areas, themes, or topics in its self-study for program review:

The themes specified by Academic Affairs for inclusion in these proposals are:

1. Improving student learning

a. Identify the student learning outcomes for all degree programs under review

b. Identify the methods used to assess student learning

c. Report on the last two years of assessment data

d. Report how the assessment results have been used to make program changes

2. Improving student retention and graduation

a. Examine department data on retention and graduation rates available from Institutional Research at .

b. Analyze the department’s success in retention and graduation relative to other departments in the college and university, including success in retention and graduation for gender and ethnic groups

d. Examine student success rates in all department courses and review department practices including (but not limited to) prerequisites, placement in challenging courses, modes of instructional delivery, and student access to learning assistance

e. Analyze departmental practices with respect to key factors known from national research to influence student success including (but not limited to) advising, active/engaging instruction, faculty mentoring, and peer support.

f. Identify strategies for improving student success that can be implemented by the department

For its self-study, the Department will use the document, “Elements of the Self-Study,” to structure the review. The self-study will cover all the degrees awarded by the department, including both undergraduate and graduate degrees.

The self-study will discuss the data gathered about the program and student success, including the results of assessment of student learning as well as data from the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment.

The self-study will discuss the department’s plans for its degree programs over the next review cycle and will specify the resources needed to accomplish those plans. It will also discuss anticipated changes to existing degree programs and/or new degree programs proposed
