Course Number: ENVR 1401 (Lecture)

Course Title: Environmental Science I

Course Description: Interdisciplinary study of both natural (biology, chemistry, geology) and social (economics, politics, ethics) sciences as they apply to the environment. Focus on current global concerns, including global warming, overpopulation, deforestation, pollution, biodiversity and resource use. Practical laboratory experience emphasizes the application of fundamental principles of biology and chemistry as well as critical thinking and analysis. Lab required.

Lab Hours: 3

Placement Assessments: ENGL 1301, MATH 0310, College-Level Reading

Student Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to do the following:

1. Evaluate the relationship between human population growth and other environmental problems. (Critical Thinking)

2. Demonstrate the collection, analysis, and reporting of data using the scientific method. (Empirical and Quantitative)

3. Describe the scientific principles that underlie the dynamics and energy flow within natural ecosystems. (Empirical and Quantitative)

4. Summarize the connections and importance between the biogeochemical cycles. (Communication Skills)

5. Describe the structure and function of ecosystem components. (Communication Skills)

6. Identify the problems associated with human health and environmental toxicology. (Empirical and Quantitative)

7. Discuss the problems associated with air pollution, water and soil pollution, and solid and hazardous waste. (Critical Thinking)
