To receive scholarships from the college you are considering, you must have completed an application for admission AND a scholarship application. It is important that you submit applications so that you don't miss out on any scholarship awards. Most scholarships that students receive come from the college they choose to attend.
Performance Scholarships
If you plan to audition for vocal or instrumental music, drama, dance, or any other activity, be sure you find out when auditions will be held at schools you are considering. Most colleges have fall and spring audition dates.

General Scholarships
Scholarships are awarded on first come basis starting in September for the following fall to encourage students to apply early for admission. If there is the slightest possibility that you might attend WSU next year, be sure to apply NOW before scholarship money is gone. Scholarship amounts are based on GPA, ACT score, leadership, work experience, and community service. Contact the department of your major to find out about departmental scholarships.
Wichita State University Scholarship Competitions
*Distinguished Scholars Competition--November 15. Eligibility: 3.5 GPA, 24 ACT, admitted to WSU by
October 1, complete application packet, participate in competition on November 15. Amount: $5000 to $40,000 Gore Scholarship (Myca Stitt, Class of 2001 received Gore Scholarship).
*Wallace Engineering Invitational--November 14. Eligibility: 3.0 GPA, admitted to WSU by October 1, declare engineering major, complete application packet, participate in competition on November 14. Amount: varies up to $15,000.
*Barton School of Business Scholarship Competition--November 14. Eligibility: 3.5 GPA, 24 ACT, admitted to WSU by October 1, declare business major, complete application packet, participate in competition on November 14. Amount: varies up to $44,000 Clay Barton Scholarship.
VERNON'S SCHOOL OF COSMETOLOGY INSTITUTIONAL GRANTS
Eligibility: schedule interview at Vernon's, complete the FAFSA to apply for financial aid, counselor/teacher recommendation, paragraph on why you want to be a cosmetologist. Amount: varies. Deadline: none, but the sooner, the better.

K-State Engineering Scholarship Day Seminar
Eligibility: pursue engineering degree, participate in Scholarship Day on October 3. Students who participate and have 32 ACT, 3.85 GPA, and top 10% of class will receive minimum of $4200 per year. Students who participate and have 29 ACT, 3.75 GPA, and top 15% of class will receive minimum of $1250 per year. Deadline to register: September 19.

Eligibility: participate in Kansas Junior Miss competition, grades, interview, talent, fitness, poise. Amount: varies. Deadline to apply: October 1.
Vocational-Technical Education Scholarship
Eligibility: enroll in vocational program in Kansas vocational or technical school next year, take vocational scholarship exam on November 2 in Wichita. Amount: $500 per year ($1000 total). Deadline to apply to take exam: October 4 (Can also take exam in March if this date doesn't work).
Outstanding Students of America
Eligibility: 3.0 GPA, school activities, community service. Amount: $1000. You do not have to purchase the yearbook to be eligible to apply for scholarship. Deadline to apply: October 15.
Prudential Spirit of Community Awards
Eligibility: outstanding community service activities since within the last year. One student may be nominated from CHS. Amount: state winner receives $1000 and trip to Washington, D.C. in May; national winners receive $5000. Deadline to apply: October 15 to allow time for Faculty select CHS nominee. munity/spirit
Washington University St. Louis Danforth Scholars Program
Eligibility: nominated by CHS staff member based on exceptional contributions to the community, personal integrity, leadership, academic excellence. Miss Kansas Teenager Competition
Eligibility: participate in Miss Kansas Teenager competition, judged on activities, communication skills, achievements, poise, appearance. Amount: varies $100 to $2500. Deadline to apply: October 15

VFW Voice of Democracy Scholarship
Eligibility: audio record 3-5 minute essay on "Freedom's Obligation." Amount: local and national winners; varies to top prize of $25,000. Deadline to submit tape: November 1.
ROTC Scholarships

Colby Community College Presidential Scholarship
Eligibility: 22 ACT, leadership, resume, interview, participate in leadership activities on campus at Colby. Deadline to apply: January 24. Amount: varies.
Sumner-Cowley Electric Coop Scholarships
Eligibility: parents must be members of Sumner-Cowley Electric Cooperative, short essay on importance of values in the business world. Amount: $500-$1000. Deadline to apply; January 31.

Eligibility: 2.5 GPA, attend two or four year college in the fall, student or immediate family cannot be Wal-Mart employee. Eligibility: adjusted family gross income on 2002 federal tax return of $35,000 or less. Amount: $1500/year. Deadline to apply: March 15.
Free Enterprise Scholars Award
Eligibility: demonstrated entrepreneurial spirit such as starting own business, participation in activities associated with entrepreneurship, nominated by member of National Federation of Independent Business (call 1-800-634-2669 for help with nomination).
