THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI-ST. LOUIS

A BRIEF HISTORY Founded in 1963, the beautiful 300-acre campus located in the Normandy district of

North St. Louis County began as a 1950s-era movement designed to create institutions of higher education in urban areas.

High school students in and around the Normandy School District, as well as around the nation, wanted to continue their education, but did not have the necessary funds for public higher education out-of-town or for private higher education in town. A 28-member committee established by the Normandy School District eventually lured the University of Missouri to establish a campus on the former site of the Bellerive Country Club. Originally, all facilities were housed in the country club building.

Today the University has grown to a large modern campus of more than 40 academic buildings, offering a full university experience for students, faculty and staff. The newest addition is the $28.7 million Millennium Student Center, which opened in November 2000. One of four campuses in the University of Missouri system, UM-St. Louis offers 46 undergraduate degree programs and seven professional programs, 30 master's programs and 13 doctoral programs in nine colleges and schools. Since it's founding in 1963, UM-St. Louis has graduated over 56,000 students and ranks among one of the top 100 universities in the country based on quality of education.

The academic structure of the University consists of the College of Arts and Sciences, School of Business, School of Education, School of Nursing, School of Optometry, Graduate School, Evening College and Continuing Education-Extension.

The largest university in the St. Louis area and third largest in the state of Missouri, UM-St. Louis has an enrollment of approximately 16,000 students at its main campus and residence centers in St. Charles and Jefferson Counties. In fall 1999, the incoming class attained an ACT average of 23.5. The statewide ACT average is 21.8.

The University has 966 faculty members, including 11 Fulbright scholars. More than 96 percent of the University's nationally recognized tenured faculty members have earned a Ph.D. With 60 percent females and 14 percent African Americans, UM-St. Louis is a very diverse campus.

Additionally, students also gain a global perspective, thanks to opportunities for study abroad.

The Center for International Studies offers a wide variety of study abroad programs, including opportunities to attend any one of more than 65 universities in more than 25 countries all over the world. Special study abroad programs have been established for students majoring in business, biology, chemistry, environmental studies, nursing and social work.

THE GREAT LAKES VALLEY CONFERENCE The 16-member Great Lakes Valley Conference has made its name throughout the last

31 years as a power in NCAA Division II basketball. In the last few years, however, the GLVC has seen success in many sports, and the league can now claim itself as one of the nation's top in all NCAA Division II athletics. The University of Missouri-St. Louis joined the GLVC in the 1995-96 academic year.

7

The GLVC can claim schools in many of the Midwest's major media markets, with schools in Milwaukee/Northern Illinois (UW-Parkside), Chicago (Lewis), Indianapolis (Indianapolis), Louisville (Bellarmine), Evansville (Southern Indiana), Kansas City (Rockhurst and William Jewell) and St. Louis (UM-St. Louis, Maryville and McKendree).

The conference sponsors 20 championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, indoor and outdoor track and field, and tennis for men, and basketball, cross country, softball, soccer, tennis, swimming and diving, indoor and outdoor track and field, golf, and volleyball for women.
