State University System and Board of Governors Documents

A brief vocabulary primer appears below and may be useful for those unfamiliar with the State Wide lingo.

Below are links to a number of important documents that been discussed or mentioned in the Senate or in Chairperson’s Reports. More information from the SUS and the BOG is available on their website where the “Florida Board of Governors” link near the top right takes you to BOG information and the first link (Florida Board of Governors Meetings) contains information and documents for their meetings), and the second link takes you to information from the Chancellor. The “Facts and Figures” column of links contains much SUS information.

Of special interest to our faculty at present are the following documents:

Florida Board of Governors Report The Report of the BOG Consultants “Proposing A Blueprint for Higher Education in Florida.

The Executive Summary of the 2007-2008 SUS Legislative Budget Request.

BOT Selection and Reappointment Process A policy document, to be adopted at the January 25 BOG meeting, describing their processes and procedures for selecting those BOT members appointed by the BOG (six BOT members are appointed by the Governor, five by the BOT, and two serve in virtue of their office—the Chairperson of our Senate and the President of the University Park SGA).

Board of Governors – State Board of Education Agreement A document is the agreement regarding which Bachelors degrees Community Colleges would offer (reached between the BOG and the SBE and accepted by the group “Floridians for Constitutional Integrity –the plaintiff in a lawsuit regarding governance issues between the BOG, DOE, and SBE filed after the creation of the BOG in an effort to wrest “control” from the DOE and SBE, and to demand that the BOG take on its mandated role).

A Brief Vocabulary Primer:

ACFS—The Advisory Council of Faculty Senates: the State-Wide body of representatives from each of the eleven SUS institutions, its Chairperson serves as a member of the BOG.

BOG—Florida Board of Governors: the Constitutionally specified agency which runs the SUS.

DOE—Department of Education.

SBE—State Board of Education.

SUS—State University System: the collection of the eleven State Universities:

FAMU: Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, Tallahassee

FAU: Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton

FGCU: Florida Gulf Coast University, Ft. Meyers

FSU: Florida State University, Tallahassee

NEWC: New College of Florida, Sarasota

UCF: University of Central Florida

UF: The University of Florida, Gainesville

UNF: University of North Florida, Jacksonville

USF: University of South Florida, Tampa

UWF: University of West Florida, Pensacola
