The Amendment is a powerful and inspiring true story of finding triumph over tragedy, injustice, and loss. In 1979, Brooks Douglass and his sister, Leslie, survived a devastating crime that rocked their community and took their parents’ lives. Initally sent into an emotional tailspin, Brooks regained his footing, became Oklahoma’s youngest state senator, and championed important victims’ rights legislation. It is not until his quest for justice brings him face to face with his parents’ killer that he finds the lessons of his father may hold the answer to finally finding peace. Go to theamendment tickets to purchase tickets. Special rates are available for groups. This movie is produced by Blue Forest Media Group, LLC, and distributed by Engage Media Partners.

Standing Rock 2018

Are you familiar with the partnership between Standing Rock Reservation (Pastor Boots), the Roanoke Valley Baptist Association, and the WMUV? Is this partnership an opportunity for you to be involved in missions in a new way? The 2018 Mission Engagement will be July 22-27 and WMUV is still looking for volunteers. Perhaps this is the mission trip for YOU!

Standing Rock Reservation is on the border of North and South Dakota and is home to about 8,500 people who struggle with the issues of unemployment, alcoholism, poverty, and domestic violence. Desolate land and extreme weather conditions make this area a difficult place to live and work. If you are interested in participating, you can register online at and attend New Volunteer Training on April 21, 2018, from 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM at the Virginia Baptist Resource Center, Richmond, VA.

If you are not interested in going but would like to help the folks of Standing Rock, you can do so with your prayers and by collecting the following items for the team to deliver:

• New shoes for children and teens (athletic/tennis shoes)

• Underwear for girls and boys (boys prefer boxers; girls love the ones with designs, not all-white)

• Socks for children and teens, preferably colored and no show, no white)

• WalMart Gift Cards

• Sweet Dreams Pillow Fund – Pillows will be given to everyone at the sites this summer.

• Pillowcases – Size 21” x 32” (A pattern to make pillowcases is available online at .)

All items must be delivered to the Virginia Baptist Resource Center. If you are interested in going to help pack the items, call 1-800-255-2428 for dates you will be needed.

JRBA MISSIONS COMMITTEE REPORT

I. Rise Against Hunger – We sincerely thank the churches and individuals who recently contributed to Rise Against Hunger. We were very elated to hear that our BGAV has given us $1,000 for this fine mission endeavor. As all of the individuals and churches of our association continue to give generously to this special mission offering, we will have enough money to carry out our biggest and best Rise Against Hunger Packaging Event ever on Sunday, June 3, 2018, at Maysville Baptist.

II. The Blue Ridge Food Distribution at the Crystal Cathedral will be held on April 13 and April 27. Please join us by 9:30 AM on these days and bless hundreds of people with good food.

III. Hope for Appalachia: Many JRBA churches, other area churches, a Newport News church, and a sorority have donated over 600 HOPE boxes as well as many other items and monetary aid for the children of Appalachia. Henry and Dixie Wood delivered the HOPE boxes to Kentucky on March 26 – 27. Rev. Woody Moore, Brenda McAllister and others gave out the boxes at Evart Elementary School and shared the Gospel with the children there during Holy Week. We are thankful for the privilege of blessing many children through this wonderful mission project.

IV. The JRBA Mission trip to the Bland Ministry Center will take place May 20 – 25, 2018. Volunteers will work in food distribution, clothing ministry, yard work, repair work, and other work around the center. Please let Phyllis Tyler know by April 16 if you would like to be a part of this mission team. Also, continue to collect the items that the team will be taking to the Ministry Center and Dental Clinic. Most of all, keep the team and the work they will do in your prayers.

In Christ’s Love,

Jimmy Dunn, Chair

CHURCH OUTREACH

Antioch (Scottsville) – 5 Loaves 2 Fish Ministry served 221 adults and distributed 88 food boxes on Saturday, March 24.. Antioch will be participating in the “Old Farm Day” celebration at Pleasant Grove on

Saturday, May 5. They will be giving out balloons, books, Bibles, cold drinks, and more.

A group of Cedar’s church family visited Heritage Hall on Wednesday, February 28, and enjoyed a wonderful time of singing and fellowship with the residents there.

Chestnut Grove collected for the Annie Armstrong Offering in March and sent $30 to the Buckingham After Prom Committee. The Youth served about 25 senior citizens of the church on March 18, at a special supper in their honor. The “Tips” collected for the excellent young servers will go to the Annie Armstrong offering. The WMU made 30 fleece blankets for HOPE for Appalachia (pictured below).

[pic]

Goshen will be preparing and serving dinner to the Longwood Baptist Collegiate Ministry students on April 5.

The Youth of Mt. Zion have been collecting coins and bills in baby bottles to support the Southside Pregnancy Support Center in Farmville.

Their Executive Director, Kathy Holsopple, will be speaking on their programs during the April 8 worship service. Mt. Zion is also collecting children’s books and Bibles to take to the Mom & Me retreat at Eagle Eyrie in April. They have 13 (moms and girls) that will be attending.

Mulberry Grove’s focus for March has been the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering. Members contributed items for the weekend backpack ministry at Buckingham Primary School. They provided food for 5 students. The emphasis for April will be collecting items for the Bland County Mission Trip in May. The church family will also look toward donating to the Rise Against Hunger meal packing event to be held in June. Several members continue to volunteer faithfully at the bi-monthly food distribution at the Crystal Cathedral. The outreach to shut-ins and the sick is an ongoing ministry.

Sharon contributed 8 bags of food for the local school backpack ministry. Current efforts are focused on collecting items for JRBA’s Bland Mission trip, cookies for Kairos Prison Ministry, and monetary contributions for Rise Against Hunger and the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering. Rose of Sharon (WMU) continues providing meals and visits to the sick and homebound.

7

OTHER EVENTS>>>

Buckingham had Games Night on Friday, March 16, with good fellowship and lots of fun and food!

JRBA LEARNS AND GROWS>>>

Antioch (Scottsville) is holding Wednesday night worship and are studying “Eternity” led by pastor David Vogt. The central theme is “What Happens When You Die?” Youth and adults attended “Youth Conference 2018”, a Valley Youth Conference, held in Roanoke, VA, on March 16 – 17. The trip was organized by Rev. Anthony Clore and Jennie Clore. It was a very enjoyable trip and provided fellowship with other youth.

On March 11, Mt. Zion WMU had brunch and a program on the Week of Prayer for North American missionaries. For each missionary highlighted during this week, they played a game to try and guess what God had called them to do. Then they painted butterflies to symbolize how God can transform lives into something beautiful. (Pictures below.)

[pic] [pic]

[pic]

Mt. Zion’s Children’s Mission Group also met on March 11 and learned about Brian and Jenny Mahon, missionaries in Newton, Massachusetts.

Just as Annie Armstrong wrote letters of encouragement, the children wrote notes to the Mahons. The Mahons invite people into their home for dinner and tell about what Jesus did for them on the cross. They have had very few to accept Jesus as Lord and Savior and need continued prayer for the ministry they are providing in that community. The letters were mailed to the Mahons and the children are anxiously awaiting their reply. The children enjoyed Fig Newtons for their snack since the factory where they are made is in Newton, Massachusetts.

FROM YOUR DISASTER RELIEF COORDINATOR>>>

This is just something for all churches to think about: It is helpful to be ready for emergencies that come up which do not necessarily meet “Disaster” criteria. When we met in Farmville on March 13 (Preparedness Training for Places of Worship), we were reminded of little things we could do to be prepared. One quick and easy way to secure our places of worship is to make sure that during services there is only one way into the facility with a person at that entrance to “greet” while looking for potential problems. Another thing is to prepare your folks as to how to evacuate in case of an emergency (how you will get older folk, disabled, children, etc. from the building). It is also good to make sure you have adequate fire extinguishers, working smoke detectors, etc. Again, just some common sense reminders to help us all have a safe and comfortable place to worship.

Respectfully,

Pastor Woody

Rev. Woody Moore

JRBA CELEBRATES>>>

The Voice of the Martyrs was at Tar Wallet on Sunday, March 18, to take pictures and film the baptism of Pastor Hussein’s daughter, Fibe There was special music by members of the church and a short question and answer period of Pastor Hussein before the worship service. A luncheon was held after the service.

IN LOVING MEMORY

Jones Chapel extends sympathy to the Watson family on the death of Mrs. Amanda Watson, a long-time

member of the church; to Jennifer Cox and family on the death of her grandmother; to Walter and Cassie

Tomlin and family on the death of their nephew, Wayne Ricker; and to Danny and Ruth McCollom on the

death of his brother, Courtney McCollom.

IN APPRECIATION>>>

The evening of March 17 at Sharon was one of warm fellowship and high-spirited music by the Willow Branch Bluegrass Band. The congregation of Sharon extends heartfelt appreciation for the sustained support of friends and neighbors as it continues to grow the building fund for a new Fellowship

Hall.

JRBA Friends,

I want to thank all of you for your support during my recent illness. I so appreciate the visits from our JRBA pastors and others. Thanks, too, for the cards, phone calls, and other remembrances from so many of you in our JRBA churches. But most of all, thank you for your continued prayers on my behalf. All of your care and concern mean so much.

In Christ,

Jimmy

Rev. Jimmy Dunn

JRBA,

I want to thank you all for your support of the S.E.E.D. Ministry. Without your continued support, I could not do the amazing things that you have allowed to happen with your finances and God’s help. Thank you all for your help and support – see below for a list of all that has been done.

The S.E.E.D. Ministry has no paid employees and no paid administration, so 100% of your donation goes to helping the people in India and Africa.

As always, if your church, Sunday School, or small group would like to see slides and video of my trips throughout Africa, I will gladly come to you. The S.E.E.D. Ministry now has projects working to make people self-sufficient in 8 countries on 3 continents, all in the name of Jesus Christ.

Thank you for your help in the past, and for any you may give. If you cannot help us with donations, please help us with your prayers.

Malcolm Warfield

Most of you are familiar with the work we have been doing in Africa. These past years we have gained entrance into India.

• Community vegetable gardens have been started in the community of Funda.

• $2500 worth of cotton seed was provided – a good crop will fund over 60% of a school we have helped to start.

• Purchased one 1500 liter water tank for the roof of the building so that they now have running (cold) water.

• Started a goat herd of 135 (hope to make it a herd of 200).

• Supplied 200 kilos of corn, 200 kilos of peanut seed, and 200 kilos of soy in Uganda. The harvest of these crops yielded enough flour and meal for a community of over 200.

• Over 750 starter cups of vegetable plants.

• Supplied all the needed government curriculum for the start of a school grades K – 8.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION>>>

• If you would like to contact Rev. Jimmy Dunn as he recuperates at home, his phone number is 434-969-6170. His mailing address is P. O. Box 804, Dillwyn, VA 23936.

• ATTENTION HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS: There is a $500 scholarship available to graduates from Louisa, Albemarle, Buckingham, or Fluvanna. Funds provided by Fork Union Chapter #111, Order of the Eastern Star. See your guidance counselor to apply – to be eligible, you MUST complete the paper work.

• 2018 Preparing for Retirement Seminars: Designed for church staff within 10 years of retirement – particularly important for those who plan to retire within 5 years. Decisions you need to make and how they will impact your financial well-being and lifestyle will be addressed. Led by Dr. Jeff Cranford, BGAV Compensation Planning Specialist. Seminars are scheduled for:

April 10: The Bridge Network Office, Chesapeake, VA

April 12: NorthStar Church Network Office, Annandale, VA

April 17: Linden Heights Baptist Church, Staunton, VA

April 24: Wytheville Baptist Church, Wytheville, VA

• ATTENTION SUNDAY SCHOOL DIRECTORS: Sampson Resources now has materials available by Allan Taylor to inspire, train, and motivate your volunteer leaders to serve with purpose and passion. Currently the DVD/CD Leader Kit + Reproducible workbook on CD + Leaders Guide + Lifetime Streaming is available for only $199.95 plus S&H. Two programs are available: Sunday School Done Right! and Forward from Here! Go to for more information or to order.

• Faith Films Network is promoting the movie, Let There Be Light. It is available to your church – there is no upfront out-of-pocket costs; there are no fees based on church size; each person who attends purchases a ticket (they supply the ticketing page); the church keeps 15% of the ticket price for popcorn, missions, or anything they want to support); and they provide free resources so its more than a movie – it’s a tool for ministry and discipleship. Go to let-there-be-light/ for more information.

STRAIGHT STREET NEWS>>>

Straight Street held their first Black History Moment at Ellis Acres on February 25. There were 14 in attendance. The speakers and honorees were Mrs. Linda Paige and Mr. Walter Dean. Mrs. Page shared about being the first black mayor of Dillwyn and Mr. Dean gave the history of Ellis Acres. Both were very interesting and inspiring. Light refreshments followed. Straight Street plans to make this a yearly event.
