Introduction

The homes and other buildings that people construct usually reflect something about their way of life. Qualities such as the materials used in a building’s construction and the size and location of its windows can tell you about the climate in which the house is located. Other design details, such as a building’s style and decorative elements can tell you something about the people who first built the structure.

The National Register of Historic Places is an official list of buildings that the U.S. government considers historically important. As protected buildings, these structures cannot be changed in any way that harms their historic details. With the help of historians, the National Park Service determines which buildings belong on the National Register. The National Park Service also helps to manage and protect those buildings.

This activity will give you a chance to look closely at houses and other buildings from the colonial era that are on the National Register.

Historic buildings on the National Register are located throughout the United States.

Part 1

In this activity, you will learn about a historic structure built during colonial times, from early European settlement to 1775. The structure can be a house or other type of building made by British, French, Spanish, or other European colonists.

If possible, choose a historic building in your local area and visit it. If you cannot visit a colonial era structure, use the National Park Service web site to conduct research on a colonial building listed on the National Register. Each building on the register has an accompanying form that lists all of the information you will need to complete this assignment.

Research Steps for the National Register of Historic Places

1) Using the National Park Service website, use the search form to find and select a property from the colonial era that is on the National Register of Historic Places.

(Search hints: In the "resource name" field, try using words like "house," "mill," or "barn" to find that specific type of structure. For the “state” field, restrict your search to one of the original 13 colonies.)

2) Your search should return a list of properties.

If no properties are listed, do another search using different terms in the "resource name" or "state" fields.

3) Click the properties listed to find a building constructed before 1775. Look at the “subject” and “keyword” fields on each property’s information page. These fields will tell you when the building was constructed.

Bad example: This property was built after 1775.

Good example: This historic building falls within the colonial time period.
