Colonization USI. 5

A. The Lost Colony

( In 1587 a group of English colonists set off to settle a colony in North America

( The colonists reached Roanoke Island, and hoped the settlement would be able to provide natural resources to sell back in England.

- economic venture

( When the colonists arrived on Roanoke it was too late in the year to plant crops, so their leader, John White, left to go back to England and get more food.

( By the time John White came back the whole colony was gone – missing, never to be found

B. Jamestown

( The English were not discouraged by Roanoke’s failure.

( In 1607 three ships sent by the Virginia Company settled in Virginia.

(Jamestown became the first permanent English settlement. (wood, gold…tobacco)

-It was an economic venture.

C. Plymouth Colony

( Jamestown was settled as an economic venture. But there was another reason English people came to America; religious freedom.

( In 1620 a group of people called Separatists came to Plymouth.

- They were known as Separatists because they had separated from the Church of England.

( They decided to go to America were they would live and be able to follow their own religion without persecution ( or punishment ).

D. Massachusetts Bay Colony

( Less than 10 years later another group of religious settlers came to America and settled Massachusetts Bay Colony.

( Unlike the Separatists, they did not want to break away from the Church of England.

( They wanted to change the church to make it more ‘pure’.

- For this reason they were called Puritans.

E. Pennsylvania

( People who lived in the Northern colonies had to follow the religion of that particular settlement.

( Colonists coming from other countries did not like that, so colonies began developing in the middle of America.

( The Quakers settled Pennsylvania.

- They wanted to have freedom to practice their faith without interference.

F. Georgia

( The colony of Georgia was settled by people who had been in English debtor’s prison.

- Debtor’s prison is where people had to go if they could not pay their bills.

( Once out of prison they wanted a new and fresh start.

( James Oglethorpe, the founder of Georgia, gave the debtors the chance to better themselves and begin a new life in Georgia.
