Secondary Education Mathematics Program

1. (25) TI-Nspire™ CAS Computer Software for Windows®(unit cost $119.00) $2975.00

RATIONALE: In order to keep abreast of the latest technology available in the schools, pre-service secondary mathematics teachers need to have access to this software. This particular software is extremely powerful and will allow teachers see how they can engage their students in discovery learning rather easily and efficiently.

2. (25) The TI-Nspire Handheld (unit cost $157.99) $3949.75

RATIONALE: In order to keep abreast of the latest technology available in the schools, pre-service secondary mathematics teachers need to have access to these handheld devices. These instruments are so powerful that rather than calling them calculators, Texas Instruments is referring to them as “handhelds.” It is expected that these instruments will shortly be available in schools, and for Queens College students to remain on the cutting edge, they should become familiar with how they work. Through these handheld devices pre-service teachers can learn how to make mathematics come alive and be more accessible to all students.

3. (3) Cabri 3D v2 - Classroom (up to 10 users) €285 (EURO’s) ($418.95) $1256.85

4 SONY Readers- e-Assessment tools =$399.00 each

(licenses included for all)

3 Tablet PC’s for instructional use in our classes and for use by our students in our two practicum classes = $2,500 each

Tablet PC’s for instructional use in our classes and for use by our students in our two practicum classes.

General Rationale:

In the two semester practicum sequence, our students work in small instructional groups with children. Handheld formative assessment technology will provide our students with a virtually real-time picture on which children need help, where they need it, and how they can help best. Getting this data to teachers in real-time, makes the assessments which are included in the software more responsive.

Technological assessment devices empower teachers to use assessment data with students. Our students will use them to record student performance on a series of questions designed to gauge reading skills. This new trend in assessment mixes existing software with portable hardware in a way that makes evaluating student skills unobtrusive and easy. Our students will give assessments to students one-on-one, and tap or write on the handhelds to record performance. With up-to-the-minute reporting applications, the technology also enables them to tabulate overall performance quickly, providing them with a virtually real-time picture on which students need help, where they need it, and how the teachers can help them best.

Electronic based formative assessment is also important in that we will be are able to set intermittent measures, or benchmarks, and adjust your instruction as we go along.

4. To examine the emotional and attitudinal aspects of text, image, and sound in enhancing social studies curriculum, including research on attitude formation and the sparking of motivation for study.

5. To provide a center that will enhance, encourage, and stimulate students and faculty in the large SEYS social studies graduate and undergraduate programs to truly incorporate sophisticated and thought-provoking ideas into their daily lessons, units, and courses of instruction.

This equipment would focus on word and image processing which calls for at least one high quality Apple computer, combined with an HP color printer capable of large-size printing, as well as transference machinery that copies slides, audio tapes, pictures, text, and film into electronic formats such as CD or DVD disks. This would require a turntable for LP's, a slide processor, and a high quality scanner, at a minimum. These machines would permit teachers and students to convert older materials, and historical records and images, and sounds into electronic formats that could be combined and re-arranged to create personalized historical programs and presentations for a wide variety of student audiences.
