SMALLBORE RIFLE

Wayne Nunn

We conducted the TSRA state outdoor prone championship in May. If you would like to know how it went….your scribe has an article on the match in the most recent issue of “The Sportsman” magazine published by TSRA. It covers the match, complete with pictures by Bill Huddleston. Nunn, Becquet, Huddleston were prime movers. I was the Range Officer.

Our mothly July Match looked like it was going to be HOT, so we got though 120 shots pretty quick, and got off range by noon. John Mc comb took prone 1184-55x and David Bump won F class 1169-62x. Next month is an 80 shot match followed by a CMP Sporter Match.

HIGH POWER RIFLE

We had six shooters, who got their liberty cards, for June's J.C. Garand training match, held on Father's Day, June 18th. It was a hot day, but the strong breeze made it bearable on the firing line. We utilized the 55 shot course 'B' format, which includes 5 sighting shots in five minutes, followed by 20 shots slow fire prone in 20 minutes, 10 shots standing to prone rapid fire, 10 shots standing to sitting rapid fire, and finished with 10 shots offhand.

We had a couple new-to-us shooters joining us, Jim Sowell from Bastrop, who shoots at the Austin matches, and Ann Albright, from Round Rock. This was Ann's first match, and she was coached by Jeffrey Townsend, who shot with us last month. Big thanks to Jon Ussery for calling the match.

John Kelly had high score, with a 453-5X, followed by Harvey Dickens, with a 438-5. Ann shot a respectable 386-1 her first time out. Eric Johnson brought out an 1892 Krag that he recently acquired. It is a nice looking, accurate rifle.

The next scheduled High Power training match is scheduled for Saturday, July 29th, at the CTSA Range, New Braunfels. Match fee is $20 for adults, $15 for Military, and $10 for juniors. Gate should be open by 0730, followed by sign-up. Paperwork begins at 0830 for squadding and set up. First rounds go down range at 0900. This will be the 88 shot NRA 'approved' across the course training match. Shooters will score and pull targets. Shooters choosing not to pull targets must provide a substitute puller.

The schedule for 2017:

July 29th - High Power (last Saturday)

August 20th - High Power (3rd Sunday)

September 17th - JC Garand (3rd Sunday)

October 22nd - High Power (4th Sunday)

November 19th - High Power (3rd Sunday)

December 3rd - JC Garand (1st Sunday)

LONG RANGE

Your scribe was in Raton, New Mexico to serve as Match Director for the Rocky Mountain Palma Matches. It was a small match with 25 shooters, but as luck would have it, we had some of the best weather I’ve ever seen at Raton. Next match is September 9-16…the Spirit of America match with events at 300,500,600,900, and 1000 ranges. If you are interested call John Gaines 830-249-2095 or go to the Bald Eagles Rifle Club web page.

As an aside, I like to take a little drive in the back country when I’m in Northern New Mexico just to see what kind of animals are out. This trip I saw antelope, elk, deer, and even a black bear! If you have never shot at the NRA Whittington Center you’re missing a real experience.

PISTOL

The June 24, 2017, 1800 Outdoor Pistol Training Tournament was well attended by eight shooters:  Jeff Huehn, Don Rupp, Bob Maxon, Harvey Dickens, Rene Gonzales, Stephen Spenser, David Singleton, and a new participant, Tyler Greene. All participated in the .22 match but only six turned in score sheets.  High man was Stephen Spenser with 571-18X, followed by Jeff Huehn with 549-14X, and Rene Gonzalez with 501-5X.  Five participated in the Center Fire Match. High man was Jeff Huehn with 543-12X, followed by Stephen Spencer with 532-8X, and Tyler Greene with 498-6x. Four participated in the .45 match won by Stephen with 559-16X, followed by Jeff with 540-11X, and Tyler with 488-11X.  Honorable Mention goes to Harvey with 474-!!X.  The tournament aggregate winner was Stephen with 1,662-42X, followed by   Jeff’s 1,632-37X, Tyler’s 1,472-20X, and Harvey’s 1,427-11X. George Becquet called the match and acted as Range Safety Officer.  Jim Ford ran the target mechanism and was the tournament director.

The next Bowling Pin Training Match will be on Saturday July 22.  The next 1800 Outdoor Pistol Training Tournament is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, August 26, 2017 if George and Harvey can do it.  I will be out of state on that date.  CHECK THE CALENDAR at for the most up to date Pistol activity information.

Thank all of you for your participation.

To Participants in STMTC Pistol Division Matches:

Jim Ford

I have been the Pistol Division Director of the STMTC since we created our range at Black Hawk.  Rene Gonzalez has been the Assistant Director during that entire time.  I have officially resigned my position as Director and Rene will assume that position.  Rene will be conducting the Bowling Pin Training Match on Saturday 7/22/17 and subsequent STMTC pistol matches.  Please direct any questions you might have concerning pistol activities to Rene at: renegado@ or (210)-859-6037. Thank you all for your participation and help over these past years.  It has made my efforts worthwhile

BRAUN 4H JUNIOR REPORT

Braun 4H is in the process of renewing their charter for the 2017-2018 school year with a plan to rename the club "Alamo City Shooting Sports." They are continuing to hold practices and recently welcomed 4 new shooters from 2 new families. The 4H families would like to thank all the STMTC members for their continued support and donations. This month long time STMTC member Lloyd Steelman donated 2 new shooting mats and 22lr ammo that went into immediate use. For information about 4H, please contact Chris Rabago at braun4h@satx..

IMPROVEMENTS TO BLACKHAWK RANGE

The berms at our Blackhawk range have eroded a bit as a result of weather and time. We are soon to make improvements to the berms building them up on the east and north sides. We also want to construct a pistol practice range with a small berm up close to the firing line. As it is now, people put up a target on a low stand and shoot it with their pistol and the rounds skip out of the range enclosure. That’s bad!

When plans are finalized the range will be closed for several days so the bucket loaders can work their magic. We are planning to make these improvements as efficiently and timely as possible. Stay tuned for the dates when work will be in progress.
