SMALLBORE RIFLE

Wayne Nunn

We had a great day for the match on Jan. 9th. Don Lenoir was top Bench Shooter with a 791-40x; Philip Beekley was top F-Class with a 756-22x; and Wayne Nunn took Prone with a 782-33x. The winds started out calm, but by the time we got to 100 yds. It was blowing pretty well. It was a great bunch to shoot with as usual.

On Feb. 6 we had a short work detail, and a few really good volunteers pitched in. These included Rene Gonzalez, Bill Huddleston, Jon Ussery, Rowland Hill, Herb ?, Lonnie ?, and myself. We started at 0800 and we were done at 1100. Range looks good! (Sorry about the short memory with the last names.)

“Approved” matches for the odd numbered months have been applied for. Now we are waiting on NRA.

BRAUN 4H REPORT

Dennis Anguiano

Braun 4H juniors will be practicing on February 14. That’s right, Valentines Day! (May there be mercy on our 4H father’s). Practice will consist of Light Rifle from 3pm thru 4 pm; Rim-fire Rifle Silhouette from 4 pm thru the end of practice (in lieu of March 5th for the Annual March Madness 4H event in Austin).

Practice on February 28th will be from 3pm thru 5pm, Small-bore 3P. The match event fee is paid for every 4H Braun junior who is registered on 4H Online and who is going to participate at the match in the three events. Also a reminder to all 4H parents: The District 10 Match in Floresville is April 16th.

The money raised thru the chocolate candy bar sales helps to fund these events or for equipment needed by Braun 4H. Thank you all who came by at the Gun Shows and visited the STMTC table and bought our chocolate. Extra thanks to Daniel Ramos who bought two cases. One was distributed to all members at the STMTC monthly meeting, and another case during the membership meeting in November.

Good luck to our 4Hr’s and safe shooting!

HIGHPOWER RIFLE

John Kelly

The January High Power training match had ten competitors, including two juniors (see picture below). Cold weather greeted the first training match of the year, at about 30 degrees when we started. It warmed up to the low 50's by the time we completed shooting. Bruce Finley took top place, with a 459-5x. Philip Beekley took first place in F-Class, with a 487-18x. Jose Duron was high junior, with a 368-0x.

The February 21st High Power Training Match has been cancelled.  We will have another working party at the CTSA range instead.  We still have some work to be done, including finishing target carriers, and stacking telephone poles in front of the pits.  Please show up by 8:00 am.  Plan on being there all morning.

The High Power training schedule has been updated for 2016 on the organization's calendar. Training matches are held on the third Sunday of the month, except for the Pearl Harbor Remembrance Match, which is the 1st Sunday of December. There is also an exception in July. July's match will be held on the last Saturday, July 30th. This is your chance to come out on a Saturday to shoot with us.

TSRA F CLASS MATCHES AND THE TEXAS TEAM

The Texas State Rifle Association has agreed to sponsor an F Class team in several high-profile matches in the coming years. They will kick off this effort with two matches. One will be a mid-range match held in Carthage, Texas March 19-20, and the other will be a long-range match held at the new West Texas Long Range Rifle Association range near Midland in September (date to be announced).

All Texas F Class shooters are welcomed to shoot these matches. If they desire to become a Texas team member their scores will be recorded and ranked. (If desired a score from either the Texas Mid-Range or Long Range TSRA matches may be substituted.) The end result will be an invitation to the best scoring shooters to be on the team. State teams such as this will compete at the F Class Nationals, and the Berger Southwest Nationals in Phoenix and possibly at the World Championships in Canada. You can get more details from Skip Barkley at skibar_tx@. (There is an ‘underscore’ between skibar and tx.)

We have a lot of really good F Class shooters in Texas. Many of them shoot for national teams like Team Berger, Team Grizzly, or the Desert Sharpshooters. These shooters will probably continue to shoot for those teams so the Texas team will be a whole new crop of F Class shooters. This is a terrific opportunity to represent your state and advance your shooting achievements.

DEFENSE / TACTICAL

January 24th Defense Division conducted a carbine drill, with four shooters in attendance. We will again be shooting on the 28th of February. Pre-registration and screening is required. Contact Fredd Bergman at tactics@ or 210-619-9340.

WOMEN ON TARGET

February 27th Defense and Pistol division will conduct a Women on Target Safety Clinic. Cost for the event is $50. We need volunteer instructors and safety officers. To help, email wot@, or call Fred Bergman at 210-619-9340. Details can be viewed at:

THE SCRIBE COMMENTS

First, I am taking the editorial liberty of commenting on the above narratives from the perspective of an old shooter with 80 birthdays to drag around. The efforts of this organization to build an operating high power range at CTSA are exceptional. We are so close to completing that project, and it is SO IMPORTANT! When those pits and targets are completed we can again have proper rifle matches. Our matches will draw shooters from much greater distances in South Texas. There are shooters in “The Valley” who will drive up to shoot with us, and remember the Austin club only has 200 yard reduced target matches, so we can expect them to come and shoot too. Our attendance will soar! We need YOU to come help complete this project. Please make the effort to be there on the 21st as stated in John Kelley’s narrative above.

Second, I will comment on the TSRA F Class team effort being forwarded by Skip Barkley. There are many advantages to belonging to a team. Other shooters on the team are willing to share tips and information on the best loads, equipment, and techniques. The wind coach will help you with the mysteries of reading the wind and strategies to cope with conditions. And there is the pride of achieving victory with your teammates. I urge you to try out for this Texas team. You won’t regret it!
