THE SALE OF THE CONTENTS OF ‘FOXLOW’

2707 Captains Flat Road, Between Bungendore & Captains Flat. NSW

One of the first farms to be taken up in the region, ‘Foxlow’ was sold earlier this year. Prompted by the retirement of the owners, Mr and Mrs Brett Falkiner, this historically important property covering 18,000 acres and only half an hour from the nation’s capital has been held in the Falkiner family since 1920.

The property has enjoyed a succession of high profile owners, including Sydney’s first mayor of Sydney, Mr John Hosking. The property was also known to some high profile bushrangers. Thomas and John Clarke (aka The Clarke Brothers) robbed Mr Hosking at ‘Foxlow’ on a staggering four separate occasions during the height of their career in 1865 and 1866, just prior to their death by hanging in 1867.

Continuing with the bushranger theme, the property was commissioned by the producers of the infamous Ned Kelly movie starring Mick Jagger as Ned in 1969. The now disused Captains Flat railway line that runs through the property was used for the railway scenes and an old shed on the property was burnt to the ground for the ‘seige at Glenrowen’ scene. This movie sealed the end of Mick Jagger’s not so illustrious movie career.

A major remodelling of the original homestead was undertaken in the early 1920’s by reknown architect of the time, Howard Joseland. The seven bedroom homestead featured in ‘Some Southern Homes of NSW’ by

G. Nesta Griffiths 1976, and the majority of the furnishings that adorned the rooms of the homestead back then are still in situ today.

Now Lawsons Auctioneers has been entrusted to sell the entire contents of the homestead and a converted barn via public auction on Sunday 21st September 2014. The Falkiner's history dates back to sheep-farming in Tipperary, Ireland and much of the artwork and furniture lays claim to such provenance.

Treasures include paintings by the revered horse painter Martin.F.Stainforth, English Sterling Silver Equine and Agricultural trophies from the early 1900’s, Antique Chinese Blackwood furniture brought out by F.B.S Falkiner in the early 1900’s from Canton China, a bird egg collection, Mick Jagger and Kelly Gang photograph’s signed by Mick Jagger, Early Australian Cedar furniture, Ceramics, Glassware, Antique rugs, Traditional Australian and English landscapes, A pair of Antique Colt revolvers from the 1860/70’s, Jewellery and memorabilia.
