School District Calendars, 2013-14

Students will begin the traditional 2013-14 school year in Florida public schools on August 19, 2013, in 48 of the 67 counties. Twelve districts will start between August 6 and 15. The other 7 districts will begin August 20 through 22. The regular school year ends as early as May 23, 2014, for students in 5 counties and as late as June 9, 2014, for students in Manatee County. Of the remaining districts, the school year ends for students in 3 districts on May 28; in 2 districts on May 29; in 6 districts on May 30; in 2 districts on June 2; in 2 districts on June 3; in 17 districts on June 4; in 15 districts on June 5; and in 14 districts on June 6. Dates may change if the state is affected by hurricanes.

Table 1 displays the opening and closing dates of required attendance for teachers and students. These dates may not be applicable to all schools in some districts. For more specific information, contact the local school district office for a copy of the calendar or visit the district’s website. Table 1 contains a link for each district’s site and also shows opening and closing dates for summer school and earlier closing dates for high school seniors, if available at the time of publication. Some districts do not establish summer school dates until late in the school year.

Many districts have in-service or planning days immediately preceding or following the opening or closing of the school year, the Christmas/winter or spring breaks, or holidays. To determine all dates when students are not required to be in attendance, please contact the local school district. Table 2 displays the Thanksgiving, Christmas/winter, and spring break dates by indicating the first weekday (beginning date) and the last weekday (ending date) of each break. Table 3 displays holidays when schools are closed for Columbus Day, Veterans’ Day, Presidents' Day, and Good Friday. All schools are closed on September 2, 2013, for Labor Day, January 20, 2014, for Martin Luther King Jr’s Birthday, and May 26, 2014, for Memorial Day.

This report contains major dates, but not necessarily all dates, when schools are closed. The local school districts submitted the dates in this report in compliance with Rule 6A-10.019, Florida Administrative Code, in which they are required to file an “official copy of the annual calendar adopted by each school board” with the Department of Education (DOE). These dates are accurate as of June 4, 2013. District school boards have the authority to set their own calendars and may alter their calendars after submitting them to the DOE, but such changes will not be reflected in this report. For the most current dates, please contact the appropriate school district office. Contact information for district offices is listed at .

NOTE: Labor Day, September 2, 2013, Martin Luther King Jr’s Birthday, January 20, 2014, and Memorial Day, May 26, 2014 are universally observed.

Some Florida schools operate on non-traditional schedules, such as year-round schedules or modified schedules, which may include extended school years (more than 180 days) or 180-day schedules with dates that differ from other schools in the district. In Hillsborough County, all schools operate on an extended school year schedule in which the school year is extended by one day. In 2013-14, 17 schools in 6 districts will follow non-traditional calendars that differ from the districts’ regular calendars (see Table 5). Most schools operating on track systems have a break between sessions. A track includes a group of students and/or teachers assigned to the same schedule. The trend of schools operating on non-traditional school calendars is shown in Table 4 below. Department of Juvenile Justice schools, some adult schools, and some district programs (e.g., hospital/homebound) operate on an extended calendar but are not included in Tables 4 and 5.
