APPLICATION FOR SENIOR RESEARCH SEMINAR

DEPT OF SOCIOLOGY COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY

The two-semester Senior Honors Seminar (W3995-3996) in the Department of Sociology is for Senior Sociology majors interested in pursuing an original research project on an interest of their own in their senior year. The first semester will focus on writing a proposal for the research, which includes identifying the relevant literature to frame the project, designing the research (interviews, survey, quantitative analysis, ethnography, or some combination), and the data gathering instruments. The second semester will be devoted to data gathering, the data analysis, and the writing of the thesis. The year will culminate in the presentation of the research to seminar members, other undergraduates, and graduate students and faculty in the sociology department who might attend.

Requirements: GPA 3.5 (exceptions may be made on the basis of individual performance)

Prerequisite: Methods for Social Research (W3110), either prior to or during the first semester of the course.
