part of their Anglican Foundations series. You can go to Latimer Trust () to find out more about them.

There was a similar series published in the 1960’s and I am delighted that Latimer Trust is now publishing a new series.

As Anglican Christians we are governed by the historic formularies, the Bible, the Articles of Religion and the Book of Common Prayer (1662, being the template). Ironically, the current divisions within Anglicanism have generated a new interest in the exploring these historic formularies. The Anglican Church in North America has made clear its commitment to these historic formularies including the pride of place to the 1662 BCP.

Why is this important? “In the end our Anglican Foundations cannot be avoided since our identity as Anglicans is intimately related to the question of Christian identity, and Christian identity cannot avoid questions of Christian understanding and belief.” (Day by Day – The Rhythm of the BCP – Latimer)

It is not necessary to use the exact 1662 services in order to be true to our Anglican heritage. However, we do well to grasp the basic principles which underpinned the classic liturgies so our present ones can fulfill the same task which Archbishop Thomas Cranmer intended.

The Prayer Books of 1549, 1552 and 1662 were an attempt to express Biblical and Reformed Christianity in practice, and to teach and train people in that faith. They marked a massive reformation in the services of the church, to remove error, and to represent the truth.

What do we mean by Reformed Christianity? We mean that view of the Christian faith which has been influenced by the theology and practice of the 16th century reformers, such as Calvin, Luther and Cranmer. It is rooted in a belief that the scriptures are the church’s chief source of authority, and from that authority we learn how sinful people can become righteous before a holy God. Righteousness or a right standing before God is given to us by faith in the Lord Jesus, whose death was a sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world, and whose resurrection guarantees us new life in this world, and in the life to come everlasting life.

We’ll explore more of these foundations in subsequent newsletters.
