GEORGIA DOT AWARDS $92.3 MILLION IN STATEWIDE PROJECT CONTRACTS

ATLANTA?Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) has awarded 24 contracts for statewide construction and maintenance projects totaling over $92.3 million. These projects were advertised for bids in July, bids were received in August and contracts were awarded on September 2.

The largest investment is the third leg of a major widening and reconstruction on State Route 140 in Bartow and Floyd counties. The 6.7-mile project --valued at nearly $56.5 million--will widen the roadway from two to four lanes beginning at SR 53 and extending west of Oothkalooga Creek; add a median; and improve and realign side roads to provide safer intersections. The corridor serves residential, agricultural, commercial and industrial communities, and is a heavy truck route and a school bus route. The project will accommodate current and future traffic, and increase safety. The contractor is G.P.'s Enterprises, Inc. of Auburn, Ga. The projected completion date is June 30, 2021. Two related projects, already under construction along the corridor, include a widening and reconstruction of SR 140 from west of Oothkalooga Creek to SR 3/US 41 and two bridge replacements.

"We are very pleased to deliver this leg on the SR 140 corridor that provides improved mobility, safety, and economic development for the region," Georgia DOT Commissioner Russell R. McMurry, P.E. said.

The second largest award is for a roundabout on SR 369/Hightower Road at SR 372/Ball Ground Road in Cherokee County. The $4.6 million contract went to C.W. Matthews Contracting, Inc. of Marietta, Ga. with a projected completion date of June 30, 2019.

Georgia DOT continues to focus on maintaining and preserving existing infrastructure with 12 awards totaling $17.6 million for resurfacing state routes. These include: four miles on SR 1 in Troup County, valued at just over $2.9 million; 8.8 miles on SR 91 in Lee County, valued at $2.6 million; and 3.9 miles on SR 121 Bypass Spur in Burke County, valued at just over $2.3 million.

Additionally, three bridge project contracts totaling just over $5 million were awarded. The highest value contract is for construction of a $3.7 million pedestrian bridge over SR 21 near the

intersection of Rice Mill Road and Market Boulevard in Chatham County. The new bridge will provide a safer alternative for pedestrians to cross busy SR 21 in order to access Rice Creek School. Construction also includes sidewalks and access ramps. Georgia DOT worked with the City of Port Wentworth and the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System to get the project underway. The design-build project was awarded to Massana Construction, Inc. of Atlanta. Completion is expected by February 2018.

Safety improvement contracts including signing and pavement marking upgrades, ramp meters and intersection improvements totaling over $8.2 million were also awarded.

See attached Award Announcement project list. Information on schedules, lane closures and detours will be made available in advance of construction activities.
