SRO Bus Driver Safety Workshop Train the Trainer

(30 minutes north of Columbus)

The purpose of this workshop is to train School Resource Officers in basic methods and techniques to best familiarize school bus drivers with emergency situations, scenarios of targeted acts of violence and to recommend possible courses of action to resolve these developments. SRO Jon Karl, from the North Royalton Police Department, has used these methods in his own community as well as shared his experience with other law enforcement agencies so that they have the necessary tools to instruct the bus drivers in their school districts.

Cost: Registration fee is $38 for OSROA members and $78 for non-members.

The fee includes training materials and morning refreshments. The higher $78 fee also includes a one year OSROA membership. Cancellations must be made 72 business hours prior to the training date.

CURRICULUM OVERVIEW

Classroom demonstration

Participants will be introduced to instructing in weapon control and simple takeaway techniques. Discussion on concepts of "violence of action."

Practical Exercise

Participants will be on a school bus where they will be introduced to various role-playing scenarios using prop weapons. Participants will learn how to demonstrate to bus drivers some basic techniques to bring a situation to a resolution and to familiarize the drivers with possible emergency scenarios. The various scenarios that will be covered are:

Bus occupant with a weapon or bomb Evasive bus driving maneuvers Fighting and disruptive behavior A.L.I.C.E. overview Unauthorized person attempting entry

on bus Bus crashes Emergency/medical situations
