Newsletter Co-Chairs: Karen Cerino & Casey Schafer

VOLUNTEER ORIENTATION

Join us for a Volunteer Orientation on Wednesday, September 7 from 8:30-9:15am. Mr. Shafferman will review school policies and address any questions or concerns. Look for a Volunteer sign up sheet in backpack mail. Contact Volunteer Coordinators Denise Mitchell at Griznd@ or Kelly Wajsgras at kwajsgras@ with any questions.

ODYSSEY OF THE MIND

Has your child considered taking part in this international, educational program that provides creative problem solving opportunities for students? Look for more information on the PTO web site.

CHICK-FIL-A NIGHT

Join us the evenings of 9/13 or 9/14 from 5-8pm at the Chick-fil-A on Route 7 in front of Shoppers. The restaurant will donate 15% of the total revenue to Lowes Island, so bring your friends and neighbors! For more info, contact amy.keesecker@.

MIXED BAG DESIGNS!

The fall fundraiser is going green and gorgeous! New fundraiser, , offers sturdy, reusable bags made from woven polypropylene. 10 – 40% of the polypropylene used in these bags is recycled from post consumer use. In addition to bags that hold up to 50 lbs, you can also purchase: iPhone covers, iPad cases, laptop covers, totes, lunch bags, insulated coolers and so much more. Look for more information on this environmentally friendly product in October backpack mail or contact Jill Gyllensvaan at jill@.

We realize that our fall PTO fundraiser comes right on the heels of the school’s magazine drive. Please know that we use these funds to jump start our income for the year, and feel that they are critical to our activities. In fact, last year our fall fundraiser allowed us to order 5 additional laptops for classroom use! We appreciate your continued support.

BOX TOPS

Each year, we collect General Mills Box Tops. Believe it or not, we made over $2,000 last year. I know we all like to see Mr. Shafferman dye his hair but this year, Ms. Meres has agreed to dye HER hair if we meet our goal of 21,500 Box Tops! The class that brings in the most will get to choose the color. Please send in your Box Tops by the 15th of each month, starting now!

RECYCLE YOUR CARTRIDGES

To help offset the drastically reduced technology printing budget, please send any used ink jet printer cartridges to school. We receive a small fee for each cartridge that we are able to recycle.

STRINGS LESSONS

Lowes Island Elementary School PTO will once again host an after school strings program for students interested in learning how to play the violin, viola or cello.  Classes will meet once a week for the duration of the school year.  Please contact the instructor, thomas.gardner@, for more information or go to the PTO webpage.

BINGO IS COMING!

More information on this fun event coming soon!

COMMUNITY NEWS: NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH GROUP

Lowes Island parent Marc Guilbault started a Lowes Island/Cascades Neighborhood Watch Group on Facebook to foster communication in our community. If you do not have a Facebook page, you can send an email to Marc.Guilbault@ and he will add you to the email distribution. Supervisor Susan Buckley and Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office have been working with him to streamline communication using this tool.

SCRAPBOOKING

Calling all croppers and photographers (of all skill levels!) to help create the 2011-2012 LIES scrapbook! Let’s work together throughout the school year to take pictures of events throughout the year. We need a representative from each class to oversee the collection of (preferably) digital pictures, every 6-8 weeks, as well as croppers from each grade (inc. students, if interested!) to create scrapbook layouts once each quarter. To participate in the fun, complete and submit your PTO committee interest form and/or email Scrapbook Committee Chair Maureen Feldman at mskfeldman@. You can also drop pictures in the box marked ‘scrapbook” located in the front office.

FINANCIAL CONCERNS

If your family is struggling with the high cost of school supplies and you were not able to purchase them all, please contact our Parent Liaison, Cindy Musa, who can help you with any needed supplies. Also, we want every family to be able to attend our events. If you find that you are struggling to participate in any PTO event, please contact Cindy at Cynthia.musa@ to discuss sponsorship.

TEACHERS’ LUNCHEON

Thank you to Lauren Owensby and Jennifer Rothe who prepared a wonderful luncheon on August 24 for our teachers after the Open House. Many thanks to the volunteers who helped them, too!

SCHOOL SUPPLIES

Thank you to Rita Scanlon who coordinated the arrival and delivery of school supplies at Back to School night.

Welcome to a new school year at Lowes Island! We are constantly reminded how fortunate we are to have such an active group of parents who volunteer their time to organize the many events we have at our school. If you aren’t involved with the school or PTO activities yet, we encourage you to do so this year!

The PTO’s By-Laws state that our main mission is “to bring into closer relation the home and school.” That funny phrase means that we work hard to bring the two worlds of home and school together. We do this primarily by facilitating volunteers and by fundraising. Our fundraising efforts directly benefit the school and this year we will be focusing our fundraising efforts into buying more technology for our classrooms.

We were fortunate last year to have a surplus of funds in our budget. We polled the teachers to see what they wanted the money to go towards, then voted and used it to buy 5 laptops, 7 document cameras and several instruments for the music department. We also bought 1 set of activotes and 7 activslates to work with the promethean boards which are now installed in each classroom!!! The teachers are very excited to have this new technology!

So, as the new school year begins, consider volunteering your time and supporting our fundraising efforts. We think that you will find that your child and our community are both greatly rewarded.

As always, drop us a line if there’s anything else that we can do to enrich your experience here.
