SUSHI DEMONSTRATION & JAPANESE LUNCH
WITH SATORI MURATA
FRIDAY, MARCH 10, 11:00 - 1:00 AM
This event was so popular, Satori has graciously offered to present it again to accommodate more of our members.
On March 10 at 11:00 AM, we will meet Japanese food caterer Satori Murata, former sushi chef at Shoko Cafe, in her delightfully serene tea room. She will demonstrate how to make sushi rolls and how to prepare side dishes with two sauces, sweet vinegar dressing and sweet miso sauce. Satori will talk with us about the cultural background and traditions of Japanese cuisine, and what people traditionally eat at home and in restaurants. While she is speaking, there will be refreshments and tea available at the table.
The session will begin with a 45-minute class (including handout), followed by a short break. Then we' ll divide into cooking groups, learning how to apply high altitude cooking principles to the boiling points of liquids and the effects of humidity. We'll discover how to make specific Santa Fe adjustments for time, temperature, and leavening.
After our demo, Satori will serve us a full luncheon which will include: Miso soup, a Bento box containing seared salmon, appetizer with fresh tuna, steamed vegetables (broccoli and carrots in a sauce), ohitashi (steamed vegetables with soy sauce and sesame seeds), eggplant in ginger sauce, and the classic sweet red bean paste dessert called yokan. Drinks, water and tea will be on the table.

JEWELRY ARTIST DAVID FORLANO PATINA GALLERY
FRIDAY, MARCH 17, 9:00 - 10:30 AM
David Forlano is one half of Ford/Forlano Art Jewelry. David lives in Santa Fe, while Steven Ford, his partner, lives in Philadelphia. How does this collaboration work? David explains: "Our artistic collaboration began years ago when we met in Rome, Italy, during a year abroad program through Tyler School of Art. Immediately we were intrigued by some essential differences in our approach to painting and this led to heated debates ...We liked how our differences challenged our own thinking. As a way to learn from each other, we started trading half-finished drawings and paintings, and working our individual ideas into them. We discovered that this kind of `swapping' has become an essential element in our collaboration."
David Forlano at Patina Gallery (cont'd)
David then continues to develop them before sending them back to Steven in Philadelphia.
While Forlano's strength has always been to push color, pattern, and surface in new directions, Ford is constantly fascinated by three-dimensional structures and how things fit together mechanically. Throughout their collaboration, they have often looked to nature -- seed clusters, shell formations, and flower buds -- for inspiration. Their collaboration has been a fruitful one with impressive awards for their jewelry -- including major prizes from the prestigious Smithsonian, Philadelphia, and Baltimore Craft Shows.
We will meet David Forlano and hear him speak about his collaboration and work on March 17. He will show the gorgeous, intricately patterned jewelry which he and his partner make from clay and silver. For jewelry mavens, it is an event not to be missed! RSVP to Barbara Hadley at hadleyburke@. $5 to the artist. Limited to 30. Patina Gallery is located at 131 West Palace Avenue. Coffee, tea, and pastries will be served.
ACTIVITIES
If you are interested in forming a new activity group of any kind, or if an activity that interests you is full, Dianne Hillyard acts as liaison for the Club's activities and will be happy to help you get involved. Contact her at dforshaw@.
POSSIBLE NEW ACTIVITY GROUPS
DISC GOLF
After years of working side by side in Philadelphia, David moved to Santa Fe in 2005, but has continued to work with Steven on individual pieces. Steven sends pieces to David's Santa Fe studio.
Looking for something to do in the cooler
months? Jim Werbel is willing to give basic disc golf
lessons and play once a week in the arroyo behind the
GCCC. Time and day of week are flexible. Disc golf is
usually highly social and a good excuse to get outside
walking in the cooler months It is recommended to
buy two disks--a driver and a putter for about $15
each. A driver only is fine for first-time players. I have
a few extra drivers you can borrow to
practice.

MOVIE GROUP
PLAY READING GROUP
When promising films are showing in Santa Fe, the movie group collectively decides which film to get together to watch. We often meet for lunch prior to viewing the film. We have no set schedule, are entirely flexible, and open to all venues and new ideas. It's peak season for new movie releases so join us for the best from Hollywood. We're the friendliest movie critics in town. Contact Rebecca Shaw at shawpublicrelations@ to get on our email/phone list.
The Table Play Reading Group usually meets the second Saturday of each month at 3PM. A play is selected, ordered, and roles are assigned at least a month before each reading. At the monthly meeting, members read the play and have a lively discussion. Currently the group is full. For more information please contact Judy Kares at jkares@ or 474-0799.
