Summary

This camp weekend will be devoted to an adventure race competition and a Family Thanksgiving Dinner for Troop 16 families and our Webelos guests.

QUEST FOR THE HOLY GRAIL:  This year's overland adventure race is a huge life-sized video game, not unlike RuneScape or World of Warcraft.  From the start at around 8:00am to the finish at 1:30pm, teams/patrols will head out from their base at Castle Arghh (see Monty Python and the Holy Grail) to collect enough items, followers, and spells to defeat "The Guardian."  Some of the points on the map will be GPS Geocache sites, while others will be challenges like jousting, rubber tipped archery, sling shots, building things, ax splitting, and other secret challenges.  As Scouts complete these challenges, they will be able to choose the treasure item that they think will help increase their team's power.  When they think they are powerful enough, they return to Castle Arghh to seize the Grail.  This year's race will cover a more contained area than last year, but there will be more map points.  Teams will be unaccompanied by adults throughout the race and will rely on radios to report their locations.  We've invited teams from two other Troops and several Webelos dens.  The Troop 16 Cups (one for regular patrols and one for first years) are up for grabs.  The Staff Patrol will be running the race and not competing this year.  There will be a briefing for Team Leaders Friday night where packets will be distributed.  Get your entire Patrol to compete.  Larger teams will have an advantage.

TURKEY FEAST:  After the Race is over, Patrols will come together back at camp to make a tremendous Thanksgiving feast run by Mr. Brainard.  This year, we anticipate nearly 200 for the feast.  Webelos Dens are invited to stay and feast with us.  The dinner will be truly something to behold.

CAMPING: Due to site restrictions of maximum of 6 people per site and 2 tents per site, scouts will sleep in Cavalry Tents. Adults should share tents where possible.

Where: We will be camping both nights in the Cottonwood Grove Loop campground at Cherry Creek State Park. The campground is located just north of the West Entrance to the park.

When: November 21-23, 2008.

Sign-up ends on October 29th at midnight.

Camp prep night will be November 18th, with camp fees due then

Who’s In Charge:

Camp Plan: Mr. Abell (303) 699-9182

Quest for the Holy Grail Adventure Game: Mr. Coleman

Food: Mr. Brainard, Mr. Follansbee and Mr. Knippers

Cost:

$19.00 Total (Standard Camp Fee of $18, plus additional gas charge of $1)

For those attending the feast, there is a $6 daily state park access fee, but no fee for dinner. You will pay this fee at the park.

What to Expect:

As is our standard practice, Boy Scouts will meet at the PUMC parking lot at 4:00 pm on November 21st to load the trailers and depart for camp.

The weekend of November 21-23, is the second annual Troop 16 Adventure Race….Quest for the Holy Grail. Patrols will compete at Cherry Creek State Park for fun and prizes to be the first team to cross the finish line after beating the challenges at various waypoints they select and then returning to the Castle Argh! (home base) to defeat the Guardian.

Activity Plan:

Mr. Coleman and his team of scouters have put together an adventure and orienteering race using a Quest for the Holy Grail theme to include giant slingshots, bow and arrows, and a variety of other fun and exciting activities to challenge the mind and skills of the participants.

After the race is done, Patrols will each take a piece of the Thanksgiving Feast to make in Dutch oven or on the stove. The Dirty Socks are in charge of the turkeys, gravy and a variety of other items. In the evening, we welcome parents to come partake of the feast.

The families of the scouts as well as our prospective Webelos are also invited to partake.

PEANUT NOTE: The Thanksgiving Feast will include deep fried Turkey. The Turkey will be cooked in Peanut oil. If anyone has an allergy to Peanuts please let us know IMMEDIATELY so arrangements may be made.

We will be camping in a developed State Park campground with on-site latrines and water. We will be camping near our cars and trailers using full patrol box kitchens, so prepare and plan accordingly.

On Saturday, we will wake very early (6:00 am), so that we can begin our day and activities by 8:30. The race will end promptly at 1:30 pm so we can get to work preparing the meal for 200 people.

Communication for the race will be coordinated through Mr. Hughes using 2-way radios and a base short-wave radio.

Webelos:

Boys and parents are invited to attend for Saturday's Adventure Race, including the feast afterwards. Webelos reservations are being taken by Mr. Hardy at bhardy.t16@ through October 29th. Cost for Webelos - just the park entrance fee. Lunch is on their own. They should pack a trail lunch for all attending.

The Webelos scouts attending will plan on arriving at 8 am (after breakfast) on Saturday. They will be split into separate patrols and each will be assigned a staff patrol member to assist with and guide the adventure race. Parents will be expected to stay with their scouts throughout the race. WEBELOS AND PARENTS SHOULD PACK A TRAIL LUNCH FOR SATURDAY NOON, as this will not be provided by the troop. After the race, the Webelos will assist in necessary preparations for the Thanksgiving Feast or play games in camp. Mr. Coleman and other necessary staff members will take an opportunity to speak with the parents of the Webelos scouts for a brief summary of the Boy Scout experience and to answer any questions they may have.

Webelos with access to GPS units should bring them. Pocket knives should be left at home.

The Webelos are guests of Troop 16, but are not a part of the troop. They should therefore follow their own Pack’s and BSA Policies, including tour permits, trained adults, etc. as they see fit. Troop 16 will not be filing paperwork for the Webelos attending, and they will not be a part of our insurance.

Please read the entire plan so you know what to expect.

Boy Scouts from Troop 469 and Troop 868:

Troop 469 and Troop 868 have been invited to attend and compete in the adventure race from 8:00 am to 1:30 pm. They will send one patrol each. Like Webelos, they should pack their own lunch for the trail on Saturday.

They are guests of Troop 16 and are responsible for filing their own tour permits and following BSA guidelines for Youth Protection Training, Trained Adult 2-deep Leadership, and guide to safe scouting. Boy Scout guests have not been invited to stay for the feast, and may leave the park on their own schedule any time after the race.

They should pack their own GPS units, as these will not be provided by Troop 16.

Please read the entire plan so you know what to expect.

Cooking:

We will be cooking using the patrol method and patrol box kitchens.

Dinner on Friday will be Bring Your Own.

The menu for breakfast on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday will be determined and cooked by Patrol. The camp hosts recommend a quick but filling breakfast Saturday and Sunday Morning.

Lunch on Saturday will be a cold trail lunch.

T16 Patrols will be responsible for cooking an assigned side dish for Saturday’s feast.

Activities Schedule:

On Saturday morning, we will wake early (6:00 am), prepare breakfast, drive to the Castle Argh! start and finish point, debrief the scouts and start the race. The race will begin promptly at 8:30 am and end promptly at 1:30 pm. Webelos will follow at 9:00 am with a modified race. The adventure race is expected to last the entire afternoon.

The adventure race will be run throughout the southeast quadrant of the State Park, and will have adults and staff scouts stationed throughout the race area. It will be run near and along developed trails. Each patrol will be given a GPS unit with a waypoint that marks the start/finish. They will be trained on how to input a new waypoint and find it using the GPS units prior to camp.

The Castle Argh! will also have a supply of water available for refilling water bottles. It will be marked on each team’s GPS unit. Each scout should plan on bringing 2 water bottles. They may be filled at the park.

Other Notes:

November weather can include warm or very cold weather, rain, hail, sleet and snow. Boy scouts should be prepared for all eventualities, including sunscreen and heavy clothing. Nights are likely to be in the 30’s or below, so winter gear is a must. Proper clothing layers for morning, evening, the hike around the park, and night are required. Day packs with water bottles, waterproof rain gear, and decent hiking boots with proper hiking socks are must-haves. A 2008 Troop 16 Personal Winter Camping Check List has been developed and posted to the website at Camping Tab, Files Menu.

Please read this camp plan (both parts) in its entirety for full information on the camp and other requirements.

Communications Plan

Planning

Planning will be coordinated through Mark Abell (Campout Coordinator) and Derek Mill (Campout Host). Incremental and final plans will be distributed and made available through the ‘’ secure website, Campout Section, November Campout subsection, files tab. This is a monitored group site requiring membership approval. T16 members can sign-up at . Click on the Webmaster link and watch the video to learn how.

Sign-up

T16 scouts will sign-up through the troop website (). There will be no manual sign-up sheets at the troop meetings. Sign-up deadline will be October 29, 2008, and payment deadline will be November 18, 2008.

Mark Abell will track and report attendees.

Campout Plan

This is a car camp trip. We will have a single, developed camp location. We will be able to drive to the camp and set up camp in developed camp sites at Cottonwood Grove Campground. As a result, we will have direct access to potable water and full toilet facilities during the day and at night. On Sunday morning, we will tear down and return to the church.

Food Plan

Scouts will need to provide their own dinners for Friday night. They will eat in the cars on the way up.

Food will be purchased and prepared by patrols based on their menus established during the camp prep night. Patrols should plan a hot breakfast for Saturday morning that does not require more than 1 hour for cooking and cleanup. Patrols should plan a cold trail lunch to be eaten on the race trail, and pack it Saturday night. Patrols will be assigned a part of the hot Thanksgiving Feast dinner on Saturday, with groceries handled by the troop.

Water Plan

Water is available on-site from spigots. Troop 16 will provide large water jugs to meet the water requirements of the scouts and will fill water bottles as needed. Water will be located at camp and at Castle Argh! Scouts and adults should bring a minimum of two 1-litre bottles full of water.

Latrine Plan

We will be utilizing developed toilet facilities. There is no access to toilet facilities on trail during the race. Scouts needing to use the facilities will need to return to the Castle Argh!

Campfire Plan

We will have access to a campfire ring but no wood on Saturday night, so a campfire will be a possibility. The troop will bring wood.

Schedules/Activities Plan

We will be enforcing a 6:00 am wakeup Saturday, 7:00 am wakeup Sunday, and 22:00 lights out both nights. There will be a roll call morning and night.

On Saturday we will have breakfast and begin the day’s activities as noted above.

The camp and surrounding trail system is well developed and will have lots of scout/adult supervision, so lost scouts should not be an issue. We will strictly enforce keeping the patrol together during the race, with adult and staff leadership for Webelos. We will expect full compliance.

Gear Requirements Plan

This is a small and large trailer, car camping trip. We will have the patrol boxes and large trailer at the camp. We will plan on bringing all large canopies in case of inclement weather. Scouts should pack camp gear in a backpack or duffel bag and bring a separate daypack for their 10 essentials. Day packs are highly recommended for this camp. As camp is held during November, temperatures will be expected to drop into the 30’s or below at night. Take extra clothes, jackets, hat, gloves, boots, and raingear with you. Water will be available Saturday morning and night via troop 5 gallon containers and spigots.

Scouts Gear

Refer to the troops gear lists for recommendations. We are camping in November. Warm, lightweight clothing in layers and a warm sleeping bag with dry sleeping clothes are musts. One set of clothes in several layers (with raingear and fleece layers) will provide the needed protection from the elements. A stocking cap and gloves are highly recommended. Those who have 2-way radios and/or GPS units are encouraged to bring them.
