LESSON INTRODUCTION

“This five-week study highlights women in ministry. The first lesson focuses on prophesying women mentioned in the New Testament. The second lesson focuses on the Samaritan women’s evangelistic ministry. Lesson Three explores Mary Magdalene’s call to unwavering discipleship. Lesson Four gives an opportunity to study the impact of Priscilla’s ministry. The final lesson focuses on Lydia’s call to service and hospitality.” From this brief overview from Precepts for Living (UMI), I call the lessons “Serving Sisters on Parade.” Being from New Orleans, I know that our city has a great heritage for putting on great parades. In fact, we have a parade for almost everything: The Rex Parade; The Zulu Parade; The Irish Parade; Second Line Parades, etc.

Well, when one reads thru the Bible, one can find that from the Old and New Testaments how much exposure God reveals through the great acts of women. Luke 8:1-3 says, “And it came to pass afterward, that he went throughout every city and village, preaching and shewing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God: and the twelve were with him,  And certain women, which had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary called Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils,  And Joanna the wife of Chuza Herod's steward, and Susanna, and many others, which ministered unto him of their substance.” Praise the Lord for the Personal stewardship of Godly women who served Jesus from many walks of life.

Now let us focus on our first women on parade. These are called the Prophesying Daughters. Our Anticipated Power Points:

• Anna on Parade. Luke 2:36-38

• Upper Room Sisters on Parade. Acts 2:16-21

• Philip’s Virgin Daughters on Parade. Acts 21:8-9

LESSON OUTLINE

I. Anna on Parade. Luke 2:28-38

According to Dr. Warren Wiersbe, “Widows didn’t have an easy time in that day; often they were neglected and exploited in spite of the commandment of the Law (Ex. 22; 2_; Deut. 10:17-18; Isa. 1:17). Anna devoted herself to serving God by worship through fastings and prayers…Anna was a prophetess, which meant she had a special gift of declaring and interpreting God’s message.”

II. Upper Room Sisters on Parade. Acts 2:16-21

(But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;  And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy: And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke: The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and notable day of the Lord come: And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”)

Now according to Luke’s notes to us in the Book of Acts Chapter 2 and Precepts for Living Commentary: “All believers

called are to be filled with the Holy Spirit…Christians are now God’s temple, the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit (I Cor. 3:16, “Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?)…Today God connects and communicates His desires through people in every walk…” Both male and female!

III. Philip’s Virgin Daughters on Parade. Acts 21:8-9

“Paul, Luke and eight others visited Philip whose four unmarried virgin daughters lived with him…The Scripture offers no extensive details about these four prophetesses…. As is often seen today, when parents are involved in ministry their children are likely to be involved as well.” Precepts for Living

CLOSING

Beloved, let us give God glory to walk in the path of righteousness and seek to live a life that honors God in the lives of our sons and our daughters. Proverbs 16:7, “When a man's ways please the Lord, he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him.”
