Noun Notes

1. noun – a person, place, thing or idea

EX: people – Madison Wester, doctor, Miley Cyrus, singer

places – Malvern, city, Egypt, house

things – cup, nostril, tuba, monkey

ideas – freedom, love, honor, anger

2. singluar noun – names one person, place thing or idea

EX: student, city, house, happiness

3. plural noun – names more than one person, place, thing or idea

EX: students, cities, houses, happiness

4. common noun – a non-specific person, place, thing or idea

EX: boy, school, car, sadness

5. proper noun – a specific person, place, thing or idea

EX: Will Marshall, T/E Middle School, Lamborghini

6. possessive noun – a noun that shows ownership

EX: the cat’s whiskers

the girl’s paintbrush

the dog’s paws

note: if the singular noun does not end in s, the

apostrophe will come before the s when it is in the possessive form

7. plural possessive noun – a plural noun that shows ownership

EX: the boys’ shoes

the gardeners’ tools

the children’s clothing

note: if the plural noun does not end in s (children, men, women,

etc.), the apostrophe will come before the s in the possessive form

if the plural noun does end in s (boys, dogs, houses, etc.) then

the apostrophe will come after the s in the possessive form
