Samuel Van Leer who married Hannah Wayne, oldest sister of Major-General Anthony Wayne ("Mad

I've been able to search back to my gx3 grandfather (1830 MO). At that time, there were three Wayne families living

in Missouri. I would like to place these families within some kind of relationship, if possible. In a book entitled "Pioneer

Kentuckians w/ Missouri Cousins", I know that all three families had spent some time in Kentucky. With the aid of the

1810, 1820 and 1830 Censuses and other sources, I've made some observations and assumptions of how they are

related. I am now trying to prove or refute my theories. If anyone is interested, you can go to the Kentucky.doc URL

to see my conculsions (the document is in word97. If you can't read that format, Email me and I'll send you a txt

document. Please note that this is a work in progress).

I have a marriage record:

John W. Wayne & Miss Eliza Talbot (daugther of Major Hugh Talbot of Millersburg, Bourbon Co., KY) m. Mar 1

1818 (KY reporter 3/25).

I believe that this is my gx3 grandfather and grandmother that eventually settled in Callaway Co., MO. I also believe

that his mother is the Judith Wayne listed in the 1810 Census. I know from the 1850 Census that he was born in PA,

but I have no idea who his father was. Unless there was another Wayne family group in PA prior to 1800, I believe

that my line is part of the Wayne family that originated in Easttown Twp of Chester Co., PA - the same family that the

Revolutionary War General "Mad" Anthony Wayne came from. I have a family tree (that doesn't include my line) that I

am currently trying to compare those "bodies" living during the 1790 and 1800 Census to see if I can discover "the lost

link". As of this posting, results are inconclusive.

This is a long introduction, but is there anymore information available, focusing on Judith and John Wayne living in

Bourbon Co. between 1790 and 1830?

thanks,

chris

Emily Frances married David Eskridge Love about September__ 1856 in Choctaw County Mississippi per an affidavit

filed on behalf of EFWL for a request for survivor benefits of soldiers who had fought in the War with Mexico in 1845.

DEL had filed an original request in 1888 and stated at that time that he was 63 years old so his birth would have been

about 1825. The Frances name is mentioned in family correspondence and in a document call "A history of Louisiana"

by Henry Chambers Pub 1925 by the American historical society. There can be found a biography of Charles

Herndon Love and mentions that his mother was Emily Frances (Wayne)Love. Frances has also been a name given to

with no dates on the tombstone. DEL's family came from Marengo County AL. Nothing else is currently known. LwL

Subject: Re: Ephraim Wayne

Body of Message:

My line traces back to the Waynes of Callaway Co. MO. While doing this research, I noticed that a Wayne family

settled in Audrian Co. (north) and one in Boone Co. (west). All three families had many, many, many children. In order

to find which children belong to my line, I've had to reseach all three :-) I have no proof yet, but I think that all three of

these families can trace a common ancestor back to Capt Anthony Wayne. Unfortunately, I don't have as much on

Ephriam and his family as I do on the others.

Ephriam settled in Howard Co. between 1810 and 1819. He came from Madison Co. KY. I have a 1797

Montgomery Co. tax listing for Ephraim. I don't know if this is a typo (got confused with Madison - a neighboring

county) or if he had a presence in Montgomery as well?? I know from this tax list that he had no acres taxed and that in

1797 he was over the age of 21. I also have a tax listing for Ephriam Wain in Madison on 12 Feb 1800. I've found

many typos with the name (Wain, Waine, Wayn, etc.), but they're all the same people.

Ephriam and Ellenor (Eleanor), as far as I can tell, had only one son, William L. William was 27 in 1820 when he

became a candidate for Howard County Coroner. Ephriam dies prior to 1819 and that part of Howard Co. becomes

Boone Co. Ellenor lives with William until her death prior to 1840.

I can not find anything on William's wife, except that she was older than him and she dies prior to 1850. They had six

children (?): Archibald H. and one other male. Amelia P., Eliza J., Sarah E. (?) and one other female. In 1838, William

adopted Jesse and Susan Johnson (are they the "other" male and female?). By 1850, William is living with a Jonathan

and Sarah E [Wayne?] Grammer and he dies 13 May 1857 in Sturgeon, "An old citizen" (Columbia Weekly

Statesman).

George W., Elizabeth A., L. Emily, Alfred R. and Franklin B. The 1850 Census also shows a 7th child (M.S.). Temple

Hello Chris - Thank you for your letter. I'll try to answer all your

questions. John Wayne b 1752 in Pa. m Mary _____(we're still trying to

establish Mary's last name and the parents of John) One thing we do

know is that it's not Mad Anthony as many would like to claim. Another

researcher that I've worked with believes that they lived in King &

Queen Co. Va. and also possibly Frederick Co. Va. prior to moving to

Campbell Co. Va. I tried to check the records of King & Queen Co. last

Sept when I was working in the LDS Family History Center in Salt Lake

City and discovered that the Court House had burned. Another researcher

I know is working on Frederick Co. Va.

John & Mary Wayne had 4 sons and 3 daughters. 1. Benjamin Franklin

Wayne b 1774 m Nancy Ann Tankersley 11 Apr 1801 - Campbell Co. Va.(my

ancestors) he d 1838 Edgar Co. Ill. 2. Elizabeth m 18 Dec 1804 in

Campbell Co. Va. to Matthias Scott. 3. Mary b 1791 - King & Queen Co.

Va. m James M Miller. 4. Temple b 1798 Va m lst- 17 June 1821 Lorinda

Peyton in Bourbon Co. Ky. 2nd marriage was in Audrain Co. Mo. 5. John

Jr. m 7 Mar 1818 Bourbon Co. Ky. to Betsey Talbot. 6. William m Judith

Lawrence. 7 Lucy m _______Martin. They spelled their name Wayne,

sometimes Whayne and Wain. The above children may not be listed

according to birth dates.

John Wayne, Sr. d. Jan or Feb 1832 Mary D 6 June 1836 in Edgar Co. Ill.

I fully believe that although no markers can be found, that they are

buried in what was known at that time as Catfish Point Cemetery (now

known as Milburn) because this cemetery was on or adjacent to the land

owned by John Sr.

In John's will he mentions all his children including William. Then

further on the will states "it's not known whether William Whayne is

dead or living, if the said William Whayne should never apply for his

part of the before-described lands, it shall fall to Mary Miller and her

heirs--". So apparently William was estranged (or at least lost) from

the family at that time.

The research on the Wayne-Whayne Family has been extremely frustrating

because of so many errors and facts that were not proven out. Some

errors can be attributed to some of the DAR records.

I sincerely hope that I've been of some help to you. Jim

Jackson Co., but this is the closest available county I can find to post this query to. Two years ago, a colleague of mine

had correspondence with an Evelyn Moore, 1617 Kasold Dr., Lawrence, Kansas, 66047-1709, when all of a sudden

he lost contact. He has been unable to reestablish contact and fears the worse. Our problem is that she had tons(??) of

vital information on the family of Wayne and we would like to retreive this info if possible. If the worst has happened,

then our proding into the lives of family and friends, may not be understood and perhaps considered inappropriate. This

is one reason for making this request on such a forum, that of being understood. This may be a situation that requires a

personal touch, knowing that Evelyn would want to pass on this infomation. At the very least, we would like to know

what has happened to Evelyn. Is there anyone willing to help out?

thanks,

chris

William Collye Wayne married Ester Trezevant, and had two children, that I am aware of, Thomas Samuel Wayne, and

Anthony Wayne. Both are mentioned in an Historical Bio of Gen. Anthony Wayne. They lived in Monroe County, Ga.

You can find some records on them there and in Savannah, GA.

Comments: This is a great site! It has a very important purpose. It also holds a very personal importance for me. We

believe that we are decendant from one of the five sons of Francis Wayne, oldest uncle of General "Mad" Anthony. I

plan on sending the form letter for preservation to Governor Ridge. I have not been any farther East than Oklahoma,

except for a brief stay at Camp LeJeune. One of these days, I would very much like to visit places like the Gettysburg

Battlefield, but if I don't, I want my children and theirs to be able to go to these places, especially Fallen Timbers/Ft.

Wayne, Waynesborough *and* Legion Ville. Our family's history and our nation's history are intertwined from the

beginning and both have prospered. There are now over 5000 Wayne households, in every state of the Union and the

majority can trace their lineage back to General "Mad" Anthony's grandfather, Captain Anthony Wayne. You may

want to add these two links to your site: Fallen Timbers: Wayne Family

History (colonial times): > thanks, Chris Wayne

Comments: Hi! I am trying to establish a connection to General A. Wayne (as my grandfather always said that there

was). My g-g-grandmother (Margurette Louisa Wayne Foust) was born in 1841 daughter of William Wayne (he may

have been born in Madison Cty, KY around 1802). If anyone has any info, it would be greatly appreaciated. This is a

great site to learn about the General.

Comments: More years ago than I would like to admit, I wrote my very first college term paper on the battles leading

up to the Treaty of Greenville. I chose the topic because I had grown up in northwestern Ohio near Ft. Wayne, Ft.

Recovery, Ft. Defiance, and not far from Fallen Timbers. Recently I, while doing genealogical research I have reason

to believe that my wife's third great grandfather may have been a first cousin to Gen. Wayne. He also may have been a

member of Wayne's troops. I haven't been able to verify this as I haven't been able to find any information on Elizabeth

Iddings Wayne's siblings nor find either pay or muster rolls for Waynes troops in the campaign in the Old Northwest

Territories. Given all this I really found this site to be extremely interesting. I hadn't known about the Legion Ville

preservation until I came accross you Web Site tonight but please add me to the list of supporters.
