BOOK ORDER

For those of you who will be placing an order, please do so by Friday, September 5th. Thank you to those who have placed orders, thus far. Any order, no matter how big or small, is greatly appreciated!

ACCELERATED READING

For those of you who are new to Accelerated Reading, it is a program in which students read books independently on their own levels, based on a Star Reader Test, and take comprehension tests about the books on the computer. If students pass the tests, they receive a set amount of points according to the books they take.

ACCELERATED READING CLASS CHALLENGE!

The 2nd grade class was given a challenge by me to earn 400 cumulative points by the end of the school year. When they reach this goal, a special celebration will be held! Some students have already started taking tests, so the class is on its way! Also, individual students will be rewarded in class and during quarterly assemblies for reaching certain point levels.

ROCKET MATH

For those of you who are new to Rocket Math, it is a structured curriculum for practice and mastery of math facts and are leveled A-Z. The students are given individual goals based on a timed test they took. Everyone starts with level A in addition. If the students reach their goals and complete that many problems in one minute, then they move on to the next level. Otherwise, the students stay on the same level until they reach their goals at that level.

ROCKET MATH HAS TAKEN OFF!

Rocket Math has gotten off to a sky rocketing start! Everyone is at least on Level B now, with some starting on Level D. If your child doesn’t reach his/her level on the previous day, he/she will bring the timing home to practice. Please practice math facts with your child 5-10 minutes nightly during the week or have your child practice on his/her own. Some suggestions for math practice are to use flashcards, internet sites, Rocket Math sheets, or written or oral practice.

PHONICS TEST THURSDAY

The students will have their first Phonics Test on Initial, Medial, and Final Consonants on Thursday, September 4th. We will study for all Phonics Tests in class.

SNACK TIME

Sorry if there was some confusion about snack time. I understand that some students brought their own individual snacks in first grade and Miss Foley or a parent would provide snacks for those who didn’t have an individual snack. Your child may bring an individual snack each day or a snack to share with the whole class. I will have snacks available to share with the class, too. If we run out or don’t have enough for everyone, then we will just have milk that day. Thank you to the Gray, Ruddy, Hansen, and DeBoard Families for sharing snacks with the class this past week!

GRADING/TEACHEREASE

The grading system may be somewhat different this year with the Common Core Standards. Please be patient with our new system, as we are still working it out in grades K-4. Mr. Bean is planning to have an informative meeting with the parents to explain the new grading system.
